Looks more like a controlled leak

Nice try Apple to skew the obvious design flaw. Wow NYT is happy to assist, no surprise here ...

And suddenly every post today says, "I knew it all along''.

You people are so full of **** it defies description.

With 4.1 I actually show less reception now. Lol....this was supposed to be a fix???? I think not....I'm so glad I sold my Iphone......Andriod here I come...

Hmmmm...i presume you are going for the new htc?
Do you think this new phone and os will be bug free? Just wondering as you are obviously an early adopter.

I don't care which phone is better or which os is better. I think they both have their plusses and minuses, but i can say that i am happy with my iPhone. Maybe i am in the minority, maybe not......

Could I have a source on that?

It looks like it could be a good source for my final essay. (On a topic slightly related)

Wow, digging up source code for a 30 year old proprietary system....

The only chance that I can think of would be to find sources for DEC ULTRIX (Digital's VAX UNIX) from that period. All of these bugfixes for hardware bugs were shared between the VMS team and the UNIX team.

In fact, the MicroVAX memory refresh problem surfaced on ULTRIX systems quite some time after VMS-based MicroVAXen were shipping. It turned out that VMS allocated physical pages fairly randomly - so that the chance was extremely high that some page in a bank would be touched. ULTRIX sorted physical pages, so that it was more likely that a bank would be allocated to a given process - and if that process was idle the bank wouldn't be touched.

ULTRIX found the bug and the fix, and then VMS added the fix.

If you have contacts at Carnegie Mellon, you might find the old ULTRIX sources in their archives.

The truth is that even if it comes to a recall, Apple will take a small hit financially and still have a great product on their hands. Apple has more than enough cash on hand to handle a recall without coming even close to going into debt.

Of course the financial "experts" on TV will talk down Apple hoping for investors to sell so their real clients can buy AAPL for a lot less per share. They know it will go back up.

Wow, it's amazing how many cellular engineers are in this forum these days. I'll ask you too, please give us some technical data and reasoning for your conclusions, ie what phones or carriers you have worked for in the past and what solutions you or others have implemented there. Please post your resume (in PDF format please) so that we can all see your immense qualifications in the cellular hardware or software industry that leads you to such informed opinions.

If your response is similar to other experts on the topic "I say *********."

I have an engineering degree from Penn State and it's common knowledge when you touch an antenna the signal drops.

And BTW you don't need an engineering degree, be a rocket scientist, or have to ablity to tie your shoes to understand this concept.

Why do you think cell phones tell you not to touch the antenna????

So .... best of luck to ol' Stevie .. you know when the UK makes this piddling wee story a major one ... that this event ... IS of major importance to Apple - because even if Mr. Jobs doesn't think it is of consequence ... most do ...

It is of major importance because the iphone is iconic like the walkman of the 80's and the ipod of the 00's.

Oh btw what is an a$$? I tried to look it up in the dictionary but I couldn't find anything. Did you and the other "experts" of the English language just define this?

Also, I never claimed not to be a total sarcastic jerk (in fact quite the opposite). What I didn't claim to be is completely informed about something I've never had any experience with. That's really my problem with your little friends. Unfortunately none of them had the expertise after their initial bulletproof statements to stand up for themselves, so your little weak insult had to suffice for all of them. Maybe I was a little to harsh on you because you had to make up for all of their shortcomings. Then again...maybe not.

You know, before you try and attack others for grammar/spelling "errors" (even though the spelling of "a$$" was clearly intentional), you might want to double check your post for errors that most 3rd graders would be able to point out.

First, it was a problem with the algorithm for the display of the reception bars.

Now, it is a software problem between the antenna and the OS.

Apple will say anything before admitting there is a flaw in the design and the antenna needs to be covered (although these other things are likely true as well).

Oh, and by the way--for those of you saying "get over it" and the like, consumers have a legal right for the products they buy to work for the purpose for which they were intended. This is basic consumer law in all 50 states, and I would guess in most countries outside the US as well. Apple needs to fix this, and the sooner they fix it, the sooner their reputation is restored.

End of story.

What kind of engineering? I have a degree in railroad engineering, does that qualify me?

And BTW you don't need an engineering degree, be a rocket cientist, or have to ablity to tie your shoes to understand this concept.

But I do have the ability to tie my shoes! Though, you got me, I am certainly not a rocket cientist. So please, I'd love to hear the engineer's explanation on what this issue is SPECIFICALLY and WHY and HOW it will be fixed. Since you have a degree in "engineering" it shouldn't be much of an issue for you to explain this to us laymen.

Why do you think cell phones tell you not to touch the antenna????

Uh when I touch my phone's antenna it doesn't tell me anything. That's something I'd talk to a therapist about if I were you.

No no, not the source code. A source for that "history lesson". It'd be a good example to use for the bases of formal methods and software engineering. (AKA, the paper Im doing now)

I dropped calls more in the 1 month I owed the Iphone 4 then I did in the year and a half I owed the 3GS. And yes while at work where I had great reception with the iphone 3gs, full bars 3g, with the Iphone 4 in the same spot. I have no bars and it goes between E and 3G. My friend who I work with still has the 3gs and his is at full bars and 3g. Download speeds are terrible. Just accessing my email takes about 1-2 minutes, while my friends 3gs in the same spot gets it in like a few seconds. He asked me if I felt good about being a Apple Beta Tester for the iphone 4.....I didn't think that was funny. I'm glad I sold it while I could make money on it. I sold it for $500, I can now get a refurb 3gs for $99 which is what I intend to do.....I'll wait for Rev B of the iphone 4...

Sounds like Apple is "leaking information" from inside the company to refute the damning evidence about them knowing it prior to shipping.

Sounds more like some morons will latch onto any internet "Rumor" that supports their beliefs.

Let's just wait and see what the facts are.

Then point them out 3rd grader (congrats on the move up from 2nd grade btw)!

I didn't ask for the job, it's a civic duty. Besides, weren't you the one who showed up to "police" me for being an "a$$"?

Yes, but unfortunately, that is my job. See below:

Dear ChrisNM,

Apple is facing a crisis. Over twenty years ago, a small, self-proclaimed group of elitists was formed to unconditionally support all Apple products, regardless of their actual quality. In the early years of our company, they provided an invaluable service. There was just enough of them to buy our less than successful products to keep our company afloat during those dark years when I was not at the helm of this great company.

But now this group, code named fanboys, has become a liability. Composed primarily of individuals lacking the most basic of social skills with an unfettered devotion to the Apple brand, they are the polar opposite of the target market that are products are designed for. At my personal direction, we have taken many steps to eradicate this scourge, including:

- Ignoring all communications from their so called user groups and alienating them at every opportunity (the very idea that these people think they can tell me what products to offer and how to run my company makes my blood boil).

- Knowing that they would be the first in line to buy the first iPhone, we intentionally jacked up the price $200 and then lowered it several months later. We then offered them a $100 store credit later to further insult them, but most of the fools actually thought it was an accommodation.

- We have constantly been behind in the rest of the market in our core computer business. The current Mac Pro hasn't been updated in years.

- Our latest attempt was to introduce the new iPhone with a special antenna that works fine in the slim hands of our target customers but drops calls when gripped by the large, greasy hands of these fan boys - but consistent with their conditioning, these fan boys continue to insist there is no problem.

For the first time in my career, I am at a loss. How do I make these people go away? That is where you, and others, come in. you must seek out these fan boys wherever they are and discredit them at every opportunity. It shouldn't be difficult, as they never know what they are talking about anyway. It is critical to the long term success of Apple that these vermin be destroyed once and for all. Happy hunting!

Sincerely,

Steve Jobs

Yeah you probably dropped a lot of calls with the 3GS in the five months before it was officially released.

Obviously Apple will fix the iphone. Do you think Apple is going to just sell all these iphones and not fix the problem? Whether its a recall or software fix, it doesn't matter.

And who here is telling you to get over it? I laugh when I see people make false declarations of others to justify their own rant.

I stopped reading really early in this post. It was boring drivel. When you can point me to posts where I've been a "fanboy" please do. You haven't been able to respond to anything else without resorting to this type of deflective behavior so forgive me if I won't expect it now. When you are actually able to truthfully agree to the terms of service that state you need to be 13 years old, drop another post my way.

You shouldn't have messed with "magic", Apple... now you have a cursed phone on your hands!

I mean, look at the history of this thing.

First it decided to jump out of Gray Powell's hand, which got a whole bunch of people into trouble. Brian Hogan and various Gizmodo employees of course, but also Apple itself who saw the entire surprise ruined.

On introduction day it decided to ruin the Keynote by refusing to load web pages, which resulted in the embarrassing "turn off all your wireless stuff and put it on the floor!" episode.

Then on launch day it decided to pull another stunt: Pretending to have a defective antenna. The mayhem started immediately, Youtube was flooded with demonstration videos and all the mainstream media around the world went bonkers with delight.

And then Apple had to publish a letter but it wouldn't stop the snowball so today there's a press conference. You asked for "magic" and you got it... the black kind. Next time, release the white version first. ;)
