I hope this is true. I don't know anything about antennas, hardware, etc. and with all of these conflicting ideas/reports I really don't know what is going on. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

The article says the bug has been around for years but only the iPhone 4's hardware brought the bug out to be apparent.

arn
That kinda jives with Apples original letter a bit. Perhaps the firmware patch was a fix part one or something. It is plausible - sometime bugs remain hidden for a long time and it takes unusual things to bring them out.

I'm 100% sure Steve knew about it before releasing. Come on guys, isn't obvious the official accessory, iPhone bumper, is being sold for $29?

Software update isn't the perfect solution at all. It has to be a hardware fix with no doubt.

The plot thickens!!

I have always said the problem could be fixed with software... but you simple minded people don't listen. All you want to do is rage about the injustice.

Sounds like Apple is "leaking information" from inside the company to refute the damning evidence about them knowing it prior to shipping.

I find it hard to believe Steve Jobs did not know about this issue prior to shipping and just by happen stance start selling bumpers that cover just the phone's exposed antenna.

Hmm... I sense a disturbance in the force.

Nevertheless, we shall see tomorrow. I'll wait to see whether current i4 users are still complaining after the second software fix before passing judgment.

I heard they put the antenna for the verizon iphone in by mistake.

LOL

I couldn't help bringing up that perpetual rumor again...

It's also possible that he knew of a concern for a potential hardware problem but someone else told him not to be concerned the communications software would compensate for it. Of course that didn't happen if there really is a software bug. :D

And now we see Apple desperately refuting the claim reported by Bloomberg this morning that Steve Jobs was warned about the antenna design.

They know that leak would be lethal in a legal battle, so they're definitely going to continue to spin that it's not a hardware flaw.

Just keep digging deeper Apple. That's never ended up being a horrible idea for any other companies in a similar situation.

Trouble is, if it’s true, there is going to be a paper trail that no NDA could cover up either subpoenaing the engineer or his notes to Jobs. Apple knows this.

I wonder how much of this information is being released by Apple in the days/hours preceding the press conference?

There has been all this negative press and reports of Apple (SJ) knowing of iPhone 4 signal issues.

Then, there seems to be a mass of information coming right before Apple holds an event.

I ponder if Apple is the source of this information in order to seem like a clam voice tomorrow.

Not trolling; just a thought.

So first they were "shocked" to find the iPhone wasn't properly reporting signal strength. Now they're going to be "shocked" again to find that the phone wasn't communicating correctly with towers?

Wonder what the third BS excuse will be.

Holy crap, this is becoming a complete circus now. Apple should have jumped in with an official response sooner instead of just tweaking software for the bar display.

This just in:

Free cell tower on wheels with all iPhone 4 purchases. Take maximum signal strength everywhere you go!

This is my point illustrated.

Honestly, this was my first thought. That's what lead to my second.

"Wahhh no this is obviously a hardware problem software can't fix it!"

That's what we'll be hearing from the MANY communications hardware engineers and communication systems "experts" that seem to all of a sudden be macrumors members in about 3...2...1...

did the update. same problem

So I did the update. Same problem as before but instead of starting out with 5 bars you start with 4 bars. Either way I have yet to drop a call due to the signal meter reading low. Apple still rules and Droids still drool.

****, I've been saying it from the start as well. No one listens. Come forth with some common sense and they think you're crazy and a fanboy.

Not sure if this makes sense but I read the initial story and though about it a bit....

The death grip may in fact attenuate the signal (one that is already assumed to be low); by doing so the iphone calculates the signal to be next to nothing/zero and says ok drop the call. With the bumper, it keeps the hand from attenuating the signal hence alleviating the problem. With a software fix, if it would truly make the phone calculate the signal correctly it may in fact solve the bar/call dropping issue (provided that this is how the phone internals communicate with each other - ie. the call is dropped if the phone CALCULATES the signal to be bad, not necessarily what is seen by the user). This also somewhat makes sense due to the fact that not everyone is having the issue.

If this was the case, has anyone tried the grip in a spot where the signal is known to be very high?

Anyway, thats my crazy theory if it makes any sense at all lol....

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4 (32GB): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

If this issue can be fixed with a software update, why bother releasing 4.0.1 only to turn around and release 4.0.2 the next day?

So, does this mean that they have been trying to solve the problem for years, more than one generation, and still haven't figured it out? I figured apple could pool the talent to solve something as important as the connection to the "mobile device" since they are supposedly the industry leader in mobile computers. I don't doubt that the problem will get better after some time looking into though. ??What are they doing with all that money??? It's like ATT saying they don't have the resources to build out their network.

This means nothing like that. Did you even read the article? The bug has existed in the past, but it only became evident with the iPhone 4's antenna's unique design.

I promise you any piece of software (even those that have been in use for decades, and have worked just fine) has many many bugs that have not been discovered yet.

If a software update can still fix the issue, why wasn't it included with iOS 4.0.1? I find it hard to believe that it took three weeks to recalculate the signal display formula. I am very curious to see what happens tomorrow.

Because it can't be fixed via software.

Sounds like PR spin BS. Apple is doing everything it can to create confusion and doubt. Those that can see past the thick mound of BS will realize Apple is in trouble. Bunch of lying scoundrels.

I call BS, Jobs knows every little detail he had to know about the signal issues.

I agree on the BS.
Why else would they deliberately remove the Field-Test code which allowed any user to examine the signal issue clearly?

Wow, talk about last minute rumors. Every possible story seems to be comming out.

I do not know what Apple is going to say tomorrow, but I believe they are on the right track now. They have released their software patch (I know it does not correct the antenna problem), and they are are going to make a statement tomorrow. People who bought the iPhone on first day will now have some time to think about things and decide if they want to keep the phone.

This has been frustrating for me but I think they are doing the right thing now and hope for the best tomorrow.
