That's awesome, I hope Europe follows sometime soon... But doesn't it then make the prices of subsidised devices much higher, since carriers can no longer rely on the fact that users will stay loyal to the given carrier?
No, it doesn't make the price of the phone higher because your contract says if you cancel your contract you still have to pay off your phone and there are prorated disconnection fees.
IMHO, the best thing about traveling is disconnecting ... it is a vacation after all. Getting lost is part of the fun![]()
If you have a SIM from some other carrier, no one knows your number.
Don't, if you run into a problem you have to mail your iphone to the country of purchase to have Apple fix it.

And what's the big deal with the when/if![]()
It's sad and pathetic that we (in the US) have to resort to hacking just so we can have a choice.
The unlock worked for me, sort of. I can make and receive phone calls, but the data is not functioning. I called the provider (china unicomm) and they said that everything was kosher on their end. Data works with my ATT sim. Any ideas what the problem might be? Maybe the sim was cut wrong?
Now read this: "However, the 2009 rule has been modified so that it only applies to used mobile phones, not new ones." aka second hand phones. Both Jailbreaking and Unlocking are legal (in the u.s.)

It's nice that Apple warns us that jailbreaking/unlocking an iPhone could void the warranty. After all, Apple is not even giving us any warranty for their cell phones - the mobile phone carriers do.
But before you move, check out the UK Apple store prices enter Apple tax which is used to set the price in the rest of Europe.Okay I have decided to move to a new country now...
at Americans not being able to buy unlocked phones. How's that hefty monthly contract feel as well

I'll just pay cash again like last time.
No, its sad that we have a service provider like AT&T in the country. They monopolized once and they'll do it again. That company should have been forever dissolved and its managers placed in jail for life.
While jailbreaking is legal, unlocking isn't...
But for us people who have to buy the iPhone 4 in another country and use it in a country where it isn't available, there is no other way but to unlock it!

.
Actually, it's Apple that is doing this, not AT&T. If you buy an iphone from the apple store without a contract, you pay full price. You have absolutely no relationship to AT&T. And yet Apple still does not provide the unlock code.
cut the old SIM with scissors to uSIM size.
Pardon my ignorance... but does this also work on 4.0.1?
