It's sad and pathetic that we (in the US) have to resort to hacking just so we can have a choice.

That's awesome, I hope Europe follows sometime soon... But doesn't it then make the prices of subsidised devices much higher, since carriers can no longer rely on the fact that users will stay loyal to the given carrier?

No, it doesn't make the price of the phone higher because your contract says if you cancel your contract you still have to pay off your phone and there are prorated disconnection fees.

I'm not so sure of that -- the prices already reflect an expectation that some number of people with stay with AT&T past the 2-year contract. A locked iPhone increases that likelihood over an unlocked one once the contract is up, at least by some percentage. So presumably AT&T factors that into the amount of subsidy it gives.

IMHO, the best thing about traveling is disconnecting ... it is a vacation after all. Getting lost is part of the fun :D

If you have a SIM from some other carrier, no one knows your number. So it's really just data and calls to make restaurant/hotel reservations and such. Plus data of course. True, it's not complete disconnection, but you can pretty easily control it after that.

And what's the big deal with the when/if

The deal (whether big or small :)) is that I will see Europe. Not an "if", but a "when".

Yea, but is this really "hacking" per-se? The whole process takes but a minute and it's directions could be followed by a blind chimp. I guess when I think of hacking, I still get visions of Angelina Jolie in "Hackers".

Unlocked, but no data?

The unlock worked for me, sort of. I can make and receive phone calls, but the data is not functioning. I called the provider (china unicomm) and they said that everything was kosher on their end. Data works with my ATT sim. Any ideas what the problem might be? Maybe the sim was cut wrong?

Both Jailbreaking and Unlocking are legal (in the u.s.)

Now read this: "However, the 2009 rule has been modified so that it only applies to used mobile phones, not new ones." aka second hand phones.

And... AT&T can hit you with a 'breach of contract' because the iPhone is a subsidized phone. Not that anyone here seem to care, in which case I wonder when we are going to see a new forum section for "Hackintosh Tips & Tricks".

It's nice that Apple warns us that jailbreaking/unlocking an iPhone could void the warranty. After all, Apple is not even giving us any warranty for their cell phones - the mobile phone carriers do.

No, its sad that we have a service provider like AT&T in the country. They monopolized once and they'll do it again. That company should have been forever dissolved and its managers placed in jail for life.

WTF are you on about? Apple provides 1 years worth of warranty for iPhones by default. You can choose to get your warranty honoured by Apple or your provider.

:D at Americans not being able to buy unlocked phones. How's that hefty monthly contract feel as well :p

I'll just pay cash again like last time.

they can buy unlocked phones but mass public choose NOT TO. traditionally people here actually like carrier subsidized phone and being tied to a contract. i came to America from overseas and was shocked to see how the mobile phone industry works in the states. they cost more than the rest of the world but lagging behind in many many areas (ie - mobile tv, payment system, etc etc)

Actually, it's Apple that is doing this, not AT&T. If you buy an iphone from the apple store without a contract, you pay full price. You have absolutely no relationship to AT&T. And yet Apple still does not provide the unlock code.

It's bullshi+.

And while it is sad that honest users must resort to hacks, at least those hacks have become so mainstream that they are now accepted as the norm.

Unlocking is leagel

While jailbreaking is legal, unlocking isn't...

But for us people who have to buy the iPhone 4 in another country and use it in a country where it isn't available, there is no other way but to unlock it!

You can jailbreak and unlock your cell phones legally. It was passed last week.

.

"New" refers to ones being sold by a store. "Used" refers to any phone once you've bought it. The point is that the manufacturer can limit resellers' ability to unlock the phone--i.e., sell it unlocked in the first place. So you're totally free to unlock your own iPhone, and to sell it unlocked to someone else. The limit is on commercial activity.

And, BTW, what a crap paragraph--it talks about a 2006 rule and then refers to it as the "2009 rule", or maybe it's referring to some other 2009 rule that's not mentioned previously in the article.

You may have no relationship to AT&T, but Apple does. And Apple locks the phones--even the direct-sale ones--pursuant to its contract with AT&T.

And the cat and mouse game continues!

Good job dev team. I wonder if this will be patched in 4.1 or 4.2?

IMHO Apple and AT&T should provide an official unlock for the 2G and 3G models once after 2 years. The contract and warranty should be done at that point.

They're doing everything they can to push folks into the 3GS/4 already with the iOS 4 features not supported by the older devices...

Tethering now possible?

If one were to unlock his phone, could he download an AT&T APN and turn on tethering as one can do on a 3GS with OS version 3.0.1?
