I had 3% less drain overnight for the same timeframe. No idea why the disparity for the same phone, outside of different service providers (I have AT&T).

I had my iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S charged fully at 12 AM. When i checked them this morning around 6:30 both were at 100%.

The 4S does seem to be draining a bit faster than my 4 though, but I haven't noticed much more "standby" drain yet (in the short period of time my phone would ever stand by - basically when I'm asleep at night).

what sucks WAY MORE is the fact that I can't deactivate 3G at all!

I found this on engadget:

Update: A few of our readers are reporting that the original Verizon iPhone 4 also lacked the 3G switch, which means the absence is most likely on a carrier-by-carrier basis.

(I know that this still doesn't help you, though)

Wish that were the case, it is no longer on AT&T 4S's either.

Wow.

4 million suckers got dragged into purchasing the same phone 2 years running.

Only to find that battery has gone backwards.

Most of you geniuses dont realise that battery should get better with performance gains.

Take intel for example.

Every generation the power usage goes down with performance going up.

Basically the A5 is just a clocked up CPU with a better GPU.

iPhone 4S = Cash Cow.

Lower costs and higher margins make stock markets very happy.

My iPhone 4 has gotten faster with IOS 5 so i doubt the performance gap everyone is seeing is all to do with the A5.

Ill wait for the iPhone 5 when a real successor comes out that warrants a £500 upgrade
The same phone? Um, it has a more powerful chip(A5) and Apple did increase the size of the battery to compensate for that. So your comment is one, off the mark. And two, rude!
We like tech and it is our business what we do with our money. So go troll your a** on Engadget.

I was disappointed with the 4S battery initially.

However after 3-4 complete charges and discharges I can honestly say there is no "noticeable" difference from my previous iphone 4.

When they keep making great decisions, it's easy.

But you don't really need me to tell you that, right? Just look at the news.

Oh, I've misunderstood you then. When I mean "great decisions" Im talking about enhancing the user experience, providing greater consumer value, and really bringing something revolutionary to the table (Ala: iPhone, iPhone 4, MacBook Air, Unibody design Notebooks, 1440p 27" iMac, iPad).
Not taking undue amounts to release incremental upgrades to existing products and not transferring cost savings to consumers (NAND as a prime example).

(I have to laugh though at all your responses, they only reaffirm everyone's perception)

So if by right decisions, you mean right for the shareholders...then I can't argue with a word you say.

I just like to "think differently". Stay well

Hardware vs. iOS

I didn't see where the graph showed that both models were running the same OS. I guess we could assume, but just an observation.

Actually, I think the ONLY similarity between the A4 and A5 is the clock speed... So way to be AS WRONG AS POSSIBLE

Is it iPhone 4 iOS 5 or iPhone 4 iOS4 versus iPhone 4S?

I've noticed a slight decrease in battery performance since iOS5.

I didn't bother to read five pages of squabbling and troll-feeding.

My 4S has shown near identical performance to my 4, which was only 8 months old when I upgraded. Similar battery drain, and I can still go a couple days without charging.

To have Siri, a dual core processor that's noticeably faster, and a camera that will blow most point and shoots out of the water? Yeah. I'd say it was totally worth the upgrade.

Not only that, but no one's commenting on the much, much better service from the redesigned antenna. I live in a remote area, and while my 4 would drop calls frequently, or I'd have to repeat things due to a bad connection, that's not the case with the 4S. I've yet to have a single dropped call, and I haven't had to repeat anything, as my voice comes through clear.

I have not read every comment here but it would be interesting to note if the 3G difference is with or without a case. Im thinking when not using a case the antenna switching software kicks in and uses more juice. I use a case and my battery life seems fine.

What carrier?

I upgraded to the iPhone 4S from the iPhone 3GS and I noticed that the battery seems to drain much faster; even faster than a phone I've had 2 years.

I can't compare it to the iPhone 4, as this article did, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks the iPhone 4S drains the battery more.

I haven't tested it extensively enough to really make a firm conclusion. But I'll be interested in reading what other people observe in their day-to-day usage.

Agreed. My 4S seems to drain faster than my 3GS (even though I had the 3GS for under a year due to exchanging my other 3GS through Apple Care and they gave me a new one). My 3GS seemed to have much better battery life than my 4S

I am not defending Apple or any other smart phone manufacturer.

But consider this. You aren't walking around with phone that can also access the web, etc. You're walking around with a computer than happens to make phone calls.

I don't think most/any of "us" would expect a laptop/netbook to run for 8 hours without a recharge. This isn't much different.

I think we just expect that newer generations of devices will run more efficiently and for longer. And for the most part - they do. Sometimes they don't.

Here we go, ****in' BatteryGate is beginning. Give me a free additional USB charging cable, Apple.

I mentioned this before, but I think my issue is that not all 4S owners seems o report the battery drain issue. If the issue was applicable to all new iPhones, then I'd be fine with accepting it. But if there is a better performing 4S out there, I'd like to have it.

My 4S was at 100% 2 hours ago and with basic usage (texts, minor browsing, etc..) I'm at 80% now. No bueno por caca.

i hope not cayuse that would point to another apple antenna design fail..
