So we doubled the horsepower of an engine and expect the same MPGs... ???
/boggled/

well, mainly because apple advertised that you'd get the same mpg. Otherwise, you are totally right

If it turns out that everyone can prove that the battery is noticeably worse, (and apple falsely advertised) maybe we'll get something out of it

Oh the humanity!? Double the data rate, and double the resolution of the video and we lose 10% of battery life. The iPhone truly has failed.

You mean the iPhone can't perform miracles?!

Major fail, Apple!

How dare they release something that has better battery life than almost every other smartphone on the market but one that still doesn't live up to the expectations of swarms of pundits and users who expect the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field to change the laws of physics!

Move along. Nothing to see here.

Steve Jobs and Apple are the only ones to blame for their success so yes, when they raise expectations by telling you their products are magical and amazing and give you all kinds of reasons why they are then expect to hear criticism when those expectations aren't met. But then I guess when those expectations fall short they can just talk about reality distortion fields and how stupid people are for expecting miracles.

The data rate for most people in US is around 2Mbps on both phones (if they are lucky to be on AT&T). Very few people are using video on a regular basis so it's mostly irrelevant for battery life comparisons. People see issues with battery life in regular (non-video related) usage.

It *is* a real world test, just because it may not be *your* real world doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

My iPhone spends pretty much half its life in airplane mode either because I'm on an airplane, out camping, at the gym, or just plain don't want to be bothered.

BUT - I still want to watch movies, listen to music, and play games.

I don't think I'm alone here, and I'd like to see a "lab" test done because it offers better "controlled" circumstances to root out factors like file formats, etc that I, frankly, don't want to control. Also, I don't have my iPhone 4 sitting around anymore.

If you don't care about the numbers and tests, move along...why sit here and tell me that I shouldn't care? You're just wasting your breath...

Because that's a real world example? "Lab" tests suck because you never truly know how they've set up their iPhone (brightness, email accounts, etc) so you'll never really get a picture on how long the battery lasts. The only true measure of how long your battery will last is to see what your usage based on your settings and activity is. No two (or very few) people will ever experience the same battery life. They might get within a range - but mileage varies on so many factors.

The best advice I could give here is - stop caring so much. Enjoy your phone. If you need to plug it in - plug it in. If you need an extra battery - get an extra battery. If you want a phone that will last days - avoid any smart phone.

I've gotten much better performance from the 4S compared to either of the 4's I've owned (one was replaced due to home button problems). It's funny though - for me, when I get a new phone or computer (just got a new MBA a month ago) I end up using the devices more than normal and either drain the batteries faster or notice the batteries last longer - because I'm using them more!

I'm definitely not seeing less battery on the 4S, but the workweek will give me a better idea as I need to go through daily heavy phone usage, email, text and web browsing on it. I don't care about video use and really don't listen to music either, but I've already seen the stronger voice battery life play out this am.

You took the latter part of my comment personally - it was actually meant for everyone.

And my breath wasn't wasted. I am entitled to my opinion as you are yours. I didn't TELL you to not care. I gave some of my own .02 about the subject. Either take the advice or don't. No worries for me either way. Why tell ME to "move along" ?

A bit hypocritical. Relax.

Upgraded an iPhone 4 to iOS 5 ... Ping was re-enabled

Picked up my iPhone 4S .... Ping was enabled(duh)

Turned Ping off and amazingly the battery life of both devices increased
I think we all found this out last year??

So was the test done with Ping off on the iPhone 4 and active on the 4S?

As iOS is catching up with Android in terms of functionality it gets closer to Android in power consumption too. And if Apple implemented real multitasking memory card support, normal size screen etc. I wonder if iPhone would be even able to keep up with Samsung phones battery life. Galaxy SII is not that far from iPhone 4. It should be evn close (if not on par) with iPhone 4S.

I have a SII, the battery life is utterly laughable. Multitasking is a double sided sword on Android because you really have to watch the Task manager in order not to drain the battery even faster. But of course the biggest power consumer is the big display with its way oversaturated colors.

You know, I had to think a moment before I knew what Ping was (if ever you want an Apple fail...but I digress). What I didn't know is you can disable Ping in some way. Thank you for this tip. My 4S should be arriving today, and I'll see about making sure it's off.

Yes, but a lot of people (including myself) are losing 10% an hour on standby.

While SGSII has bigger display it also has bigger battery. In my own experience, SII has pretty decent battery life. Of course it will depend on how one uses the phone. In general, it looks like there are as many complaints from SGSII owners about battery life as theer are from iPhone 4S owners :) SGSII users have one advantage - they have a replaceable battery.

The screen? Most people do prefer OLED. It is overaturated but the contrast ration is orders of magnitude better than LCD.

This may not help anyone, but I've noticed that iOS 5 has a Location issue that may be causing battery drain for some users/devices.

If you notice the location arrow won't go away, check under Location Services -> System Services

"Setting Time Zone" is getting stuck on multiple devices. I disabled that on my 3GS.
On iPad (and maybe iPod Touch), "Cell Network Search" may also be stuck. I disabled that on my iPad 2.

Something similar happened to my 3GS when iOS 4.0 was released. Location services drained it way faster than it should have.

There seems to be two separate issues here -

1) Some people are noticing a slight degradation of battery performance - not surprising given the spec improvements.

2) Other people are noticing real problems - my phone is currently only achieving 10 hours of standby between charges with very light use. I also notice my usage and standby are nearly the same even though I am hardly using it and everything like location/siri is turned off. I suspect this problem may be due to a conflict/bug.

and there are other users who don't have any issues.

I know what you mean but why don't you just believe us?
There is no such setting on the iPhone 4S, it's just gone!
here is what it did look like before....

this setting is not there anymore on the 4S!

I know i agree, def not there but on their own website it says.

"Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)"

so i guess the only way to do this is if you're in an area with no 3g?? not sure many people on this forum talk on phones anyways except for conf calls

It's like that for everyone it seems.

The first day I got it, I charged it up to 100% and then it died overnight (while I was asleep so). So unless my dog has a late night internet porn habit (given that he's a 6 year old virgin this is certainly plausible), something is wrong. But it seems like if it was a universal issue more bloggers/journalists would be ranting about it. Right now the phone is just unreliable. I hope "conditioning" the battery helps. I never had this issue with any of my other 4 iphones.

One would think so but when it comes to covering Apple... so called journalist will never report a problem until the whole planet knows about it.

He's just pointing out your guaranteed disposition to applaud Apple regardless of their decisions.

"Apple releases redesigned iPhone 5 with 4" screen and tapered aluminum design"

Way to go Apple. This is why the competition will never catch up. Apple will always be the leader in innovation, this phone proves that. They could have easily just given it the new A5 and improved cameras, but they didnt stop there. This new design really takes the iPhone to the next level...larger screen and consistent battery life is better than anything else out there.

Mean while, all the Android garbage is just doing spec bumps. Post PC-Era here we come.

"Apple releases iPhone 4S with A5 and improved camera"

Incredible. Apple really made the right choice here: Improve upon a perfect phone. Let's be honest, a redesign wasnt the best thing now. When all the competition is scrambling to release bigger and bigger phones, Apple stays away from a fad and delivers a perfect 10 again. The A5 and Siri are huge game changers. Pick out a coffin now Google/Microsoft/RIM.

Honest praise and criticism are essential to becoming the best you can be, and creating something truly special. If it starts with Apple, you totally forget that. Peace

Dude, that's a gem of a post.

I wish I could put that whole as a signature. :D

The best way to figure out what is going on is to try turning off one thing overnight until you find the culprit. Location services, wifi, bt, etc, etc.

It's likely what you'll hear from Apple should you take it in for them to look at.

Wrong. They advertised -

"Talk time (iPhone 4S):
Up to 8 hours on 3G
Up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)

Standby time (iPhone 4S):
Up to 200 hours

Talk time (iPhone 4):
Up to 7 hours on 3G
Up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)

Standby time (iPhone 4):
Up to 300 hours"

Which is WORSE MPG on standby mode by 100 hours. And 1 hour better in talk time. Get your facts right, they did not advertise the same battery performance.

If it turns out that everyone can prove that the battery is noticeably worse, (and apple falsely advertised) maybe we'll get something out of it

Everyone can't prove it. Mine is AS advertised. There may be quality control issues, but the most you will get out of it is a replacement phone (which, you could get anyway by walking into an Apple store and returning it).

Thanks. I just looked and noticed that my Autolock was set to never. Now I dont recall that my screen was on for the entire night, but that surely would hurt battery life.

This is all dumb. The three measures by which battery is worse are 3G on ATT, WiFi, and video RECORDING.

ATT users are reporting higher 3G speeds on 4S than on 4. The WiFi is faster on 4S than on 4. Video Recording is significantly higher resolution on 4S than on 4. So what the measures should be are battery life per data transferred and battery life per video data recorded. If I can download the same App using less of my battery and in less time that's a win not a fail.

Meanwhile talk time and Facetime have improved battery life. So the 4S has BETTER battery life for talk time and BETTER battery life per download. This article is pure bunk.
