I don't know anyone who puts their phone down face down. That is kinda ridiculous, actually.

Not really. For those that choose to put it face down, there's a notification light, for those who put it face up, there's the screen to light up. It's an accessibility feature for the hearing-impaired anyway, it's not supposed to be a mainstream feature.

Ever heard of camera phone? I got my first one in 2003. :D

And to be fair many will use it as a camera and the main thing is it will have good video and mega pixels but they could have added much more.

Why yes and, therefore, I don't expect it to have the same capabilities as an actual, dedicated camera. That wouldn't practical in the form factor of a phone.

A lot of people, actually. Your natural hand movement when you're talking on it and then putting it down is for it to be face down. And there's the whole privacy issue. A lot of people have a case w/ a lip so it protects the face. The people I do know who don't use a case or shield are confident in the "it's not going to scratch" thing and still put it face down.

This is a 700$ product.

It needs to have a good camera. My 2008 phone has Dual LED flash granted its 3.2MP but Iphone4s is 8MP and still has single LED flash.

Very few people buy professional cameras WITH a phone.

The fact that this 8MP camera is still missing some features is disappointing.

I think the argument people are making about it is that when you have it face up there is no way to know if you've missed something unless you were right there to see the screen come on.

It has what it has, so you are going to have to be dissatisfied.

Phone cameras will always be missing some features though, that's what separates them from dedicated camera. The 4S camera is really good, and the sample shots from Apple look even better than what my girlfriend gets with her point-and-shoot camera. It's a $700 product for many reasons aside from the camera.

If you come back from leaving your phone lying around, tap the home button. You went back to your phone for a reason, why not just check it?

I thought the point of the improved low light performance was to reduce the need for a camera flash? I have a dual flash on my thunderbolt and trust me all it does is create way over exposed photos, 1 flash is plenty IMHO.

Same on the Evo.

To be fair, I can fully intend for this to be a Frisbee for my dog, but it's main function is still a phone.

I guarantee 99% of iPhone users do more apping than talking on the phone.

With that being said, I had a photo exhibit with photographs taken solely with the iPhone. It's camera is legit and the OP's point is valid.

the iPhone is not primarily a phone. It is 1/4 a phone, 1/4 iPod, 1/4 computer, and 1/4 camera.

I will also add that flashes suck in general on mobile devices. I hardly ever use my flash, all it does is create unwanted shadows.

Flash on cameras do not make good pictures, usually (specially point and shoot devices). The 4S camera has 2.4 aperture which will allow you to capture images w/o flash if you practice. I'm actually buying the 4S because of the improved camera and I'm a serious photography hobbyist.

Pair that up w/ photo-editing apps like Snapseed, Photogene, or Filterstorm Pro, and you can create stunning images!
