Those crazy Brazilians and their heavy import tariffs. Maybe rewarding their heavy fees with a BRAND NEW APPLE PRODUCTION PLANT will show them how silly they are. Just like America has. Oh, wait...

Production costs in Brazil are still significantly less than if they were to move everything here to the States. Everyone benefits from free trade, so quit complaining. The data isn't on your side.

Isn't it strange that electronics always cost much more in poorer countries? For example, owning any Apple product in Hungary automatically means you're quite rich

So true, especially considering Hungary is a complete economic and financial mess these days. The last time I was back there was in 1996, and the situation wasn't so rosy then, either.

This is incredible. I have a couple of friends who's parents still live there, I always wondered why they thought everything was soo affordable here. I'm just curious, so how common is it for someone under 30 to have a phone such as an iphone?

Not exactly. Most of the people that get these Unlocked iPhones have existing contracts, they need to have contracts in order to use internet on their phones.. It's very expensive to surf the web here in Argentina/Brazil/Uruguay if you're on prepaid. They charge nearly $0.50 per MB. And there isn't wifi everywhere. So you're basically paying $1600 for the phone + $60-100 for the monthly plan with crappy '3G' (20kb/s download, 17kb/s upload). And in a year spend $1600 on the newer iPhone.

unless all phones have similar cost

Nope. Most phones in Brazil are almost free, with a carrier plan.

Also, even if you buy them in contract, they all come unlocked now. I think it's the law.

You could get an iPhone 4 32gb in January 2011 here for about US$600, with a 1 year contract.. They'd been available since september 2010 or so.

And yes, the pictures in the media showed people in lines getting their iPhone 4Ss for one to two grand here. Bunch of idiots.

I think it would be cheaper for someone in Brazil to purchase a plane ticket to the US, buy an unlocked iPhone, and fly home. Just a thought for the Brazilians out there. (Or buy several and sell them on the black market, and yours is essentially free!)

NO!

A ticket costs about $1K, without a hotel or other costs. Maybe it worths if you buy for someone else or a macbook. The problem is when you come back, you have the risk of loosing the products due to Customs Inspections.

Price in Chile

Here is Chile you can get it for $0 with a $120 a month contract, its a fairly normal monthly contract price for smartphones here.

In my case I've seen them around but not that much, I work in a high profile company and a bunch of coworkers have them but still... just five of them or so (300+ employees), and in the streets it's the same, If you see one or two in day that's an exception. But you do see lots of android phones... and LOTS of samsung smartphones... like the Galaxy S2 for example...

And yes, Internet rates for smartphones here in argentina ar outrageous... and the speed totally sucks... but such is not the case with Uruguay (the neighbor next door :p) In Uruguay you can get an internet connection in your smartphone for no more than 5$ per month with 3GB of cap and in some cases more... you just gotta find out that you can tier the internet connection of your smartphone with the ADSL you have at home, with the same company that means 5$ per month of 3G data :). Yet again... you pay 1000$+ for any iPhone black market or not.

Lol if the iPhone costs thr much there what does a crappy dumb phone cost?!?!?

You're wrong. You can actually get a planet ticket from about 400$ to Miami nowadays. Taking from the cost-benefit, it is cheaper to fly to the us and buy an iPhone there, plus you can do some turism. And Customs doesn't really tax mobile phones, cameras (personal electronics) anymore.

Well, in Brazil you can get a crappy internet for 0,25$ daily on prepaid. But really, don't expect much! You can't even load a youtube video on a prepaid internet conection :/

Thank god $699 iPhone costs exactly the same in India after release. Before that black markets sell it for $1000 or more.

It's not common, at all.. and if you see someone under 30 using an iPhone it's because A) they're not from here, B) it's stolen or C) they have the luxury to spend 2000 on a new phone every year. There's tons of things that aren't common here for people under 30, such as driving a car, owning an apartment, etc.

I don't know about what happens over there, but that is not at all the reality of all the region.
Here in Chile, you can get the 4s for around US$200 with a US$80 contract for 18 months, $340 with a $60 contract, or even free if you are willing to pay $120 a month. All with unlimited data.

If you are willing to go to a lesser carrier (Claro), you can get it for $120 with a $90/month fee.

It's always been this way in South America.. I live in Buenos Aires, where everything costs 3x more than in the US. The iPhone 4S is not currently available on any network, but lots of local tech stores bought them unlocked in Italy or in the states, the cheapest 16gb Unlocked iPhone 4S sells for $1600uss.
The major carriers here (Claro AR, Movistar, Personal) still sell the original iPhone 4 16gb under contract for over a thousand bucks :| Then again.. you don't see ANYONE using Apple devices.

Pricing

I cannot believe that the iPhone in brazil cost as much or more than in Argentina where usually even a lollipop is more expensive than any other country, and don't give me thumbs down because is completely true and everyone should know that we have the highest prices in the continent because of our &%·$@ woman president....

I agree.. In my case, I work at the airport, I see 5 or 6 iPhones daily (3GS,4) but the owners are over 45 years old and are executive managers. You do see many Android devices but not as much as Blackberry phones.. Specially the 8520 model. I see over 1000 of those daily.

However, I do not fully agree with your last statement, I lived in Uruguay for 3 years and mobile internet was far less superior than in Argentina. The speeds were even lower and if you maxed out your data cap they would charge you twice as much for every MB you used.
