Has nothing to do with apple's iphone and everything to do with Verizon. I don't think they plan on supporting it on anything but LTE. Sorry.

And APple is not planning on supporting LTE either. So, just go with Android and enjoy your simultaneous voice and data on Verizon.

Apple isn't using a SVDO chip, therefore it cannot do both at the same time on Verizon (or Sprint).

Just because they didn't include it on this version doesn't mean they never intend to.

Verizon doesn't offer it, so there's no reason for Apple to include a chip that does. That was my point.

iPhone4 antenna

Now that they supposedly fixed the antenna, will they retrofit the new design on the still selling iPhone4's 8GB models?

Well, I hope this does fix the bridging problem. I guess we'll see.

It does by definition. The alternate send/receive antennas are no longer adjacent, so unless you're bridging both in two separate locations, you theoretically shouldn't see it. I say theoretically because I don't know how good Apple's switching technology is.

I do not intend to wait for them to make up their mind when I can enjoy faster data speeds and simultaneous voice connection right now.

I would guess so. That way they can produce one model with two different faceplates and that's it.

If you would abandon a particular phone and mobile OS simply because you want higher theoretical speeds or a feature you're likely to use sparingly, go right ahead. It just seems like a poor reason to drive a purchase to me when there are much more pressing questions like what ecosystem do you want to be a part of, how secure is the mobile OS you are on, what is battery life like, etc.

People who are disappointed about the design of the new iPhone are silly. The only reason they're disappointed is because they can't show off to other people that they have the latest phone. How sad if that's important to you.

HTC Thunderbolt has SVDO. There my be others.

How can they sell an iPhone 4 which they know has bad antenna design, alongside the improved iPhone 4S which rectifies the antenna issues?

Because people like you bought it thereby sending them the message that it is OK to sell shoddy designs.

Wow what a lackluster keynote:

1) No new nano. Not even a refresh or a minor redesign. Not even new colors. All they did was spend 12 months photoshoping new clock faces. Pathetic at best.

2) No 10th anniversary ipod classic. They missed a huge opportunity to capitalize on the 10th anniversary of the product that had a huge part in making Apple the juggernaut that it is today. I was envisioning a white ipod classic this year to commemorate the anniversary. NOTHING was done by Apple. Even if it wasn't extremely profitable, it would have been a great marketing strategy for the company as a whole.

3) No iphone 5. Don't really need to go into this.

4) No Steve Jobs! You are missed Steve. Mr. Cook is great, but we miss your energy. It's just not the same.

So my question is, will these antennas allow CDMA networks to have simultaneous connections for voice and data like AT&T?

Technology doesn't work this way. There is no relationship between simultaneous voice and data and number of antennas nor design of antennas.

And to answer your question, the iPhone 4S probably does NOT support SVDO over CDMA2000.

Wait, I thought there was no problem with the iPhone 4's antenna. How can Apple fix a problem they claimed didn't exist?

they changed the antenna because they put CDMA and GSM in the same unit. That would require changes.

NOT that they fixed a real or made up by the hit hungry media problem

Hey does anyone have any info on the Factory Unlockeds?
There was not a mention today.

it seems unlikely they would recant that policy once it was started. Best way to know is to see if there's an option to order one unlocked come Friday.

What I want to know even more is if I can have service on CDMA and GSM at the same time. Well not exactly the same time. But where I live in LA Verizon is THE service to have. But I have to travel to Canada, Australia and England for work over the next few months, none of which have CDMA. I won't be there long enough to break contract with Verizon etc (maybe 3 weeks the longest time) plus I want to keep my voicemail going even if I have to call in for it manually.

So could I buy the phone on CDMA and then when I am outside of CDMA put in a GSM sim card on a local number so my phone still makes and receives calls.

Because that would be way better than carrying two phones.

Is it just me or is the iPhone 4S and iOS5 taking a lot of cues from Android? The improved notifications, the speech recognition, the improved camera, the improved carrier support, and other areas all seem to be following in somebody else's footsteps this time. Some things are truly new and specific to apple but for me October 2011's presentation seemed to have a lot more to do with following than leading. It didn't really seem like a great time to bring Uncle Tim out either. Or maybe without the RDF everything that was previously amazing just seems so much less impressive?

Hold up, so are you trying to imply that Team Android invented the idea of "releasing improved products?" What's the last 50 years of technology been? Divine intervention?

Because people like you bought it thereby sending them the message that it is OK to sell shoddy designs.

I bought it originally without knowing about the shoddy antenna design.

Apple did offer the chance to refund it, or I could've swapped to a 3GS, and would've done if it wasn't for the retina display. Also, I wasn't sure whether it was the iPhone 4 or my network provider who was responsible for the signal issues (I changed from O2 to Orange when I upgraded to the iPhone 4), and it turns out it's both. Orange are crap in Edinburgh, and my iPhone 4's bad antenna makes it even worse.

Sure, those who live in good reception areas have no problems, and when I travel, I get 5 bars of 3G and no matter how I hold my phone, I get 5 bars. But in poorer signal areas, the iPhone 4 really does suffer, and is far worse than the 3G/3GS in that area.

Does this mean I can not be on the phone and use the internet at the same time on Verizon? If so, I'm going to switch.

if you mean via cell data, yep that is exactly the case.
there is a flavor of CDMA that would allow it but it's not used in the iPhone. so if you are on a call you can't get on the internet unless you are in wifi

And APple is not planning on supporting LTE either.

Apple has said no such thing. All they said was that they feel it is not ready at this time and thus right now will not be including it.

When it is more stable and widespread, they could feel it is ready and add it.

4) No Steve Jobs! You are missed Steve. Mr. Cook is great, but we miss your energy. It's just not the same.

Two of the best decisions they could have made.

If Steve had been the presenter it would only serve to continue the notion that Apple = Steve Jobs.

If Tim had tried to copy Steve when he is so very clearly not Steve he would have been bashed for it. So instead of Tim Cook doing Steve Jobs doing a presentation, we get Tim being himself. Which is way more low key and lacking in hyperbole and giving the media little to talk about other than the products which are what Apple is and where the focus should be, not on the guy holding the microphone

I thought Tim did great.

I'm never a fan when Schiller takes the stage, he's always too nervous and his words don't always come out right. Tim was very calm, cool, and didn't mess up any words. Schiller forgot about part of the presentation! Schiller's great at marketing etc, but he's no good at keynotes.

Scott F. is the only one I like, other than Jobs, at delivering Apple keynotes. You can tell he's not ********ting, he's excited about what's in the product he's releasing. Tim Cook and Phil Schiller are run-of-the-mill speakers. I hope Forstall takes over the helms at some point.

No one will ever replace Jobs, but they can at least give us someone that's not old and boring delivering keynotes.

Apple is rolling like Intel on a tick-tock strategy; innovate, refine, innovate refine...

This iPhone will still sell like nothing before it.

Good analogy. The iPhone 4S will be the number one handset in 2012 and the number 2 handset in 2011. The iPhone 3GS will be the number 3 handset in 2011.

I do not intend to wait for them to make up their mind when I can enjoy faster data speeds and simultaneous voice connection right now.

Do you get paid by the letter or the post?

So, Apple's announcement today: "After sixteen months, we've worked out the kinks. Enjoy." Oh well, life moves on.

lol thats the best comment I've read about the 4s.. Apple is just milking us, iPhone 5 due in Jan then..
