You'd be incorrect.

GDP per capita is like $8500.

an iPhone cost how much?

Most people in China are either:

poor living and working on a farm
poor working in a factory

though things are changing.
Maybe the previous poster didn't state it right, but I think the implication is that there are so many people in China that if even a small fraction can afford an iPhone that's still a lot of people.

The sentence in bold is totally uncalled for.

What's racist about that statement, it's true...they eat dogs in china, if you don't like that maybe you should go over there and educate them on a more proper diet than man's best friend lol

Plans "as low as" $62?

The average wage in China is $ 14 000 a year.

In the US it's 26 000, double that.

Translated into Chinese wage, it would be a plan as low as $132 a month. Now it sounds right for China.

But in China, people have much cheaper food (although may not safe), cloth, transportation fee and other daily life expenses. It would be hard to estimate the burden of buying an iPhone as in the US. Computers and high tech products in China have never been cheap but still, people feel happy to have them, and they are actually able to do so too.

Then what? People in the US eat turkeys while Chinese don't. And most Chinese won't eat dog anyway. Don't be too blind and learn how to tolerate other cultures. Actually most nowadays racists won't consider themselves racists and this is one of the best example!

And in most of the world we eat pigs - more intelligent than dogs and capable of just as "human" relationships. Who's to say dog doesn't taste great? Some cultural differences theres just no point mentioning except to troll or offend.

I love the confetti pic though. :)

Lighten up. In a tolerant society you can make jokes like this without being called a racist.

It's racist plain as simple. As much as making a joke about fried chicken and watermelon if there was a black guy in the picture.

Chinese, in general, don't eat dog. Some regional areas in the south have been known to, but in general, in Northeastern China (where most people live), it's totally unheard of.

Koreans on the other hand...

200,000 preorders out of 1.3 billion isn't exactly a lot.

This is one carrier, late to the game, and people had already been using iPhones (bought outright) on the carrier anyway.

By comparison, China Mobile has 15 million iPhone users at present.

wow, there's NO logo for CE or FCC on the back. If that's a real photo.. at least for Europe, they can confiscate and destroy the device when you bring it into any European country!..

I can see the police lining up from now to check tourists iPhones for CE or FCC logos..

In theory, they could. But they could also confiscate and destroy my homemade mint-tin headphone amplifier. So far they haven't, when I've travelled to Europe. They have better things to do than confiscate and destroy home-brew and non-compliant electronics from tourists.

Just FYI, Germans and French enthusiastically ate dogs before it became tattoo. Where do you think the term 'hot dog' comes from.

Some people in Switzerland still eat dogs in the form of sausage and jerky today.

Unfortunately most people there can't afford an iPhone.

China is already the world's biggest market for autos and pc's. Plenty of people there can afford the iPhone. It's a huge market for Apple.

It is extremely rare. I spend a few months a year there, and have never seen it. The practice is almost exclusively contained to the south of the country (where they will eat anything that moves). Even so, the rest of the country is appalled by the practice, so there have been laws passed to prohibit it.

On the other hand, I have seen dog-meat restaurants all over the place in Korea.

I think the whole "Chinese eat dog" myth is spread because:
a) Most emigrants from China throughout the early 20th century were from the south. They're not exactly reflective of most of mainland China, and have their own distinct cultural practices.
b) Koreans love their dog meat, and there was a large exposure to their culture during the Korean War. However, many people conflate Korean and Chinese culture, despite there being very little in common.

The fact is that every time we see an article on the iPhone in China (where it sells something like 50 million units per year and has become as much of a fashion accessory as Prada handbags and UGG boots among urbanites), we also see racist nonsense come out. It shows a distinct insularity and immaturity among the commenters here.

A little off topic but don't believe everything because it was written on wikipedia... This is a known urban legend.

It may be a wikipedia article but it is a well established fact that the French, Germans and even the Belgian ate dogs enthusiastically.

People don't make xenophobic jokes in a tolerant society. It's the opposite of tolerance.
I don't think you understand the definition of tolerance. Here let me give you the definition:
Tolerance or toleration is the practice of permitting a thing of which one disapproves, such as social, ethnic, sexual, or religious practices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolerance

You were ironically displaying intolerance towards jokes that you find offensive.

Here is the definition of xenophobia:
Xenophobia is defined as "an unreasonable fear of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenophobia

I hope that clears some things up for you. You are seeing something that simply is not there. The joke was all in "fun" and not made to "attack" anyone. Stop being so damn hypersensitive.
