I'm certainly no expert on proper photography, but for snapping a quick shot on the kitchen table under questionable lighting, this is about as good as my point and shoot was ever able to do.

It may not be the greatest image in the world, but I think most of us won't have to apologize "for the crappy cellphone pic" when posting something online anymore. Then again, I am coming off a 3GS, so maybe I'm just more easily impressed.

White balance seems more then a little shifted in the 4s. A warm tone is not necessarily bad though as the vast majority of photos taken with it will be of people. Noise is not too bad either but I still would have loved to see a 2MP sensor with really nice noise control. These photos are going up on Facebook not being printed at 20x30.

trying so far for 3.5 hours to activate. Just on hold for 45 minutes to learn it will be another 2 hours. What a mistake reupping my contract.

I have a $7,500 professional camera and it takes better pictures than the 4S. I can talk clarity and stuff, but I won't go into detail.

Talk about fail posts...

This is about the camera, not activation.

And no **** a $7500 camera is going taking better pics than a phone. You should have went into even less detail by not posting at all.

Holy too much detail batman.
A blank post from you would have been a perfect amount of detail.

And the best camera is the one you have with you. And it can put your photos online too.
This is where your $7500 paperweight fails.

Cool story bro...

The days of every household having a standalone camera is gone.

Yeah! Totaly agree! Apple is..like magical ;D

This is the "post PC era". And since these magical iThings have taken of we now have the "post camera" as well.

I just can't belive how incredible these things are. Who needs anything more than a iPhone and iPad these days. I will throw out all my other $$$ junk now........

What's with the sarcasm?

Is he saying that the iPhone replaces DSLRs+? Nope, not at all.

Is he saying that many, that previously had a point-and-shoot, will now mainly take photos with their camera? Yes, and I happen to agree - this is a level of quality that is acceptable for many.

I opened both photos in preview to see the info:
First box: iPhone4. Second box: iPhone 4S

In terms of detail, the 4S sensor seems to do a better job (those extra pixels are resolving something significant).

But as far as image noise goes, it's not an entirely fair comparison:

iPhone 4 Image: ISO 800
iPhone 4S Image: ISO 500

As expected for ISO 800, the iPhone 4 is noisy, a better test would show the 4S at ISO 800 as well.
I'd also be interested to see a comparison at base ISO.

Also advantageous is the iPhone 4S's faster f/2.4 lens (compared to the iPhone 4's f/2.8) which explains why the 4S image only required ISO 500 for a similar exposure.

Looks promising...

I think the advantage of having a sensor that accepts more light like the iPhone 4S has is exactly that under the same external conditions you can take a photo at lower ISO and therefore with less noise.

That's because images now have a "gold" tone. :D

I actually prefer the cooler balance of the iPhone 4. The higher res is nice, though.

I actually agree. I thought I might be the only one >_>

But the 4S coloring looks... odd to me. It's sharper, though, which is good... perhaps it could be balanced manually to be more like the 4 :)

Both are absolutly AWFUL quality, if you click on the images to see them full size they are both very noisey.

I've got a good DSLR with a nice lens but I suppose the quality of those iPhone pics is good enough – especially if it's just for Facebook. And 90% of my pictures are.

It's times like this where I really regret losing my SE Satio. I pretty much hated most of the things with that phone but the camera was by far the best I've had on a phone, of course it didn't matter that it had a 12MP camera but the quality of it was really good. :( Was awesome that I could make the images large too without a quality decrease.

Oh well, the 4S will have to do.

Two questions:
Could colour saturation be inproved through a software update or not?
Also, can ISO settings be manually adjusted, or is it too much to ask of a phone camera?
I have a 3GS and was looking forward to upgrading just to have a decent camera on my iPhone, especially since I read Sony would be supplying the sensor. Cybershot Sony-Ericssons took amazing photos even at lower resolutions...

I have an M8 and a DLux 3 and 99% of my pictures wind up getting taken using my iPhone 4. It just happens to be in my pocket when a picture presents itself.

I can imagine that the standalone camera is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, and no, nobody thinks it's just down to Apple. Mobile phones have had cameras for a long time, and they're really getting to be "good enough" for most people.

So mind your manners, eh?

They are still very bad, I dont think the flash was used and instead the pictures where lite using a celing light or the sun.

Yeah. I prefer the colour balance of the iPhone 4 too.

I nearly bought an iPhone 4S for the camera. Seeing these pictures, I'm glad that I stuck with my 4. I never really print pictures from my iPhone. They're just for FB, online galleries, Web pages and emails, and frankly, the resolution is just fine for those.

What would be needed inside this comparison is the same picture taken by a professional SLR Camera like a Nikon or Canon.
Then and then only we can say wether or not the 4S is much better than the 4.
It most probably is but I seems like the colors are a bit saturated or the white balance is off.

Oh Apple what am I going to do with you. Just when I almost could do without Siri for another 2 months this start to happen, what is a tech junky to do.:roll eyes:

I must admit I take way more pictures and all my video with my iPhone 4, but now its going to be everything on my iPhone, my 250 dollar camera just became obsolete. ;)

Why would it be even a comparison that makes no sense. SLR vs an iPhone right a big ass camera design to do only one job, vs the thin small iPhone.

Where do these people get their ideas from?

Hehe
Sorry my wording was wrong.
What I meant was this:
It would be nice to see the reality of that scene/photo next to it and that can only be done by a Pro SLR.
I know I shouldn't have said compare, I myself owned a Nikon Pro SLR before and know how to make good pictures.
By no means can you compare a point and shoot or Mobile phone camera to a Pro SLR.
Cheers

Edit 1: I did post right away after reading the article, now I see Kikoy500 already did add pictures of a SLR camera.

Thanks kilkoy500

Edit 2: I just saw the full sized picture from the 4S, Fock what a grainy picture

Actually, without being there it's hard to know which white balance setting is correct for the lighting conditions. Although auto white balance is always hit or miss except for general outdoor unshaded lighting.

this 100 times this
I cant see the iphone 4 overcompensating on a "peach" colored wall like that. Seems the 4s white balance is off..

with other phone having had an 8mp camera 6 months ago its nice to see the ip4 catch up but would have been better to see it pull ahead and set a new standard

my wife's 4S just showed up, I will sync her to the same photostream as my iphone 4 and ipad, so i will have those HQ photos anyway. :D

Mark my words.. there WILL be an increase in the divorce rate of couples ,because of this feature, if ever such a study should be done..
