I've got the 32gb black and also have the rattle. It was the first thing I noticed when I first put it down.

It's not loud enough to bother me, I'm just concerned it will damage the camera if it keeps happening? I plan on having his for at least 18 months. Will 18 months of rattling damage it?

It's actually the power button. I have 3 4s and they all do it. It used to happen with some 4's but seems more common on 4s.
I fixed it on my 4 by opening up the back plate and just tightening the button. It's at a weird angle and you need a very small screw driver but it can be tightened.

my 16GB black rattles as well. as long as it doesn't affect performance i can deal w. it. def. going to try / take a look at the power button.

Re: iphone 4s Rattle

Just left the Verizon store and happened to check out the floor models. Both the White and Black iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4s that they had there had the rattling near the rear camera lens. It appears that this is just an issue that everyone is going to have to either deal with or try there luck with a replacement phone. I would just hate to have a phone now that is perfect with no issues and chance getting a phone as a replacement with a major issue.

I figure I have 12 months warranty through Apple and the replacement warranty through Verizon...If it gets worse or breaks something, I'll replace it. Just figured I'd share that all the floor models have the same issue. May put some minds at ease.

I checked my old iPhone 4 and my wife's new 4s. They both also rattle. I just never noticed it with my iPhone 4. Now I can't stop noticing it on my new iPhone 4s! :p

There are moving parts and the rattling is generally nothing to worry about. Sometimes it's just the lock button. My iPhone 4 has rattled since I got it in June 2010 and I never exchanged it. It's worked fine all that time. I doubt I ever would have noticed it if it weren't for threads like this. As long as your phone is functioning fine, I don't see any reason to exchange it.

its the silent toggle switch. its just a little loose. if you put your finger on the toggle to hold it in place and then tap the back you won't hear it anymore

It appears on the iphone 4s it is the camera. I took mine apart to tighten the power button and noticed the actual camera unit rattled! I guess as some mentioned, maybe part of the stabalization?

I JUST started noticing the rattle in my 4S

I have a white 64GB iPhone 4S and only today did I just start to notice a rattle sound. I'm uncertain whether the rattling just started today for me (I bought it on Oct. 14th, having lined up at my cellphone provider's store) or if it rattled all along. But something tells me it didn't rattle when I first got it, less than a week ago.

Definitely right that once you notice this rattle, you can't stop noticing it! Bugs me like crazy!!
I don't know, I could almost swear there was no rattle when I got this phone 5 days ago. :(

I rang Apple about this issue, and they told me this shouldn't happen and told me to get a replacement from my carrier.

Now keeping my fingers crossed that my replacement doesn't have anything wrong with it!

Mine does the same. Im thinking it is the sensor in the phone that turns off the screen when you make calls. I have the same sensor in my harmony remote so it knows when to turn on. Probably shouldnt be making noise but it does have to be able to move freely to work properly

Mine does it too now, i had read this thread before last week and mine didn't do it at the time. I just picked it up a second ago and now it does it.

Like someone said, once you hear it, it cannot be unheard!

As long as its not faulty i'm not fussed.

Mine does it... But I don't care because I don't go around hitting the back of it

Stopped by Apple today and had them take a look at my 4S, it was taken in the back to another "genius" and the answer for the rattle I was given was it is the new linear oscillating vibrator that is causing the noise. It is totally normal and as long as it is not effecting the phones operation there is nothing they were going to do about it.

I checked every 4S they had on display and they all made the exact same noise when tapped on the back near the camera.

Can anyone recreate the rattle by tapping anywhere else but on the back near the camera?

My 32GB Black 4S does it too, not that annoying to be honest. Just shook mine violently and it was barely noticeable at all, only if you tap it on the back near the camera. Not worth sending it in for a new one which will probably do the same.

Same here...

It's actually the power button. I have 3 4s and they all do it.

Actually it's not the power button. Okay, maybe yours is, but I've held down every button on mine and lightly tapped on the back; rattle rattle. I checked my 3GS and it rattles just like the 4S, although it may be a different component. Not even sure what IS rattling on the 4S, but I'll let someone else try that. Not that big of a deal. More important things going on in life than to sweat such a small detail. :)

I have 3 4s iPhones on a business contract and they ALL rattle. Its not a problem it is The silent/mute switch that is a bit loose and rattles.

My old iPhone 4 handsets were the same but not as bad. It is slightly annoying but not a real issue.

Just hold the switch and give the phone a tap to check
