So for how long exactly do you expect them to support it? What would be the estimate? Forever?

People have low expectations regarding the useful life of modern stuff, that's the problem.

I was not talking about flagships, but mid-range, like my wimpy Sony Ericsson.

Okay, but other 2011 flagships haven't lasted this long either, so what's the point of suggesting that the 4s should have fared better on the basis of specs?

So, what is your expectation? How long do you think a company should support their hardware?
It depends on a device basis. As other Apple devices as powerful as the 4S are still supported, it is clear that the hardware is not obsolete.

Android is much worse.
I'd say vote with your $, but unfortunately Apple is already doing this better than everyone else and they have increased the amount of time they support their older devices over the last few years. Would it be nice if they continued to provide basic security updates to devices no longer supported on the latest version of iOS? Absolutely. I wouldn't hold my breath though as there is little incentive for Apple to do this.

Someone had said similar iPads were supported by iOS 10, but I don't track this stuff.

It's OK that it doesn't get iOS 10 then. It does not mean a device that still works well should not get timely security updates.

This is where Microsoft shows PCs are better than Macs.

You keep saying this but it is not true. All devices with the A5 processor are not being supported with iOS 10. All devices Apple is continuing to support with iOS 10 have at least the A6 processor (which is more than twice as fast as the A5 in the iPhone 4s) and 1 GB or RAM (which is double the 512 MB in the iPhone 4s). The A5 provides a poor user experience with iOS 9 (and iOS 8 for that matter) and continuing to try to support it doesn't make sense. Sorry.

Awesome, good for you. Enjoy your PC.

Are we talking about iOS, Android and Windows Mobile or are we talking about macOS and Microsoft operating systems?

Comparing mobile devices to full fledged computers isn't a fair comparison when it comes to the functional life of the device.

I thought we were talking about phones? Mobile tech in phones is advancing much faster than PCs at the moment. The latest iPhones (both the 6s and SE) are about 10 times faster than the 4s. By comparison 2016 PC processors are on average only about 25% faster than their 2011 equivalents. I remember a time (back in the 90s) when PC technology was advancing very rapidly and a new version of Windows would render a 2 year old computer basically unusable and completely obsolete. You are comparing Apples to Oranges here.

The hardware is newer, the longevity of the software is better, but I don't feel at ease using Windows.
I understand. For what it's worth, I just bought a gaming PC and I'm loving it. Windows 10 isn't nearly the piece of junk that some people make it out to be. For me, it's worked perfectly. Super quick, runs everything I need it to. Give it some time, and you'll see the ways that it complements your Mac.

No. Windows is horrible inside.

It starts with the Registry.
I used to do fresh re-installs of Windows on a yearly basis, but the registry has been managed much more effectively since from Vista and 7 onward. Combined with the vastly superior hardware of today, registry issues are virtually non-existent now. Believe me, I understand your hesitation... but I think you'll find that the state of Windows today is generally better than it's ever been. I love my Mac, but I certainly don't mind Windows.
