I was not talking about flagships, but mid-range, like my wimpy Sony Ericsson.
People have low expectations regarding the useful life of modern stuff, that's the problem.
It depends on a device basis. As other Apple devices as powerful as the 4S are still supported, it is clear that the hardware is not obsolete. So, what is your expectation? How long do you think a company should support their hardware?

I'd say vote with your $, but unfortunately Apple is already doing this better than everyone else and they have increased the amount of time they support their older devices over the last few years. Would it be nice if they continued to provide basic security updates to devices no longer supported on the latest version of iOS? Absolutely. I wouldn't hold my breath though as there is little incentive for Apple to do this.Android is much worse.
iOS 9 will be the last major version for all A5-based devices.Someone had said similar iPads were supported by iOS 10, but I don't track this stuff.

You keep saying this but it is not true. All devices with the A5 processor are not being supported with iOS 10. All devices Apple is continuing to support with iOS 10 have at least the A6 processor (which is more than twice as fast as the A5 in the iPhone 4s) and 1 GB or RAM (which is double the 512 MB in the iPhone 4s). The A5 provides a poor user experience with iOS 9 (and iOS 8 for that matter) and continuing to try to support it doesn't make sense. Sorry. It depends on a device basis. It's OK that it doesn't get iOS 10 then. It does not mean a device that still works well should not get timely security updates.
This is where Microsoft shows PCs are better than Macs.

I will probably give my idle new PC away and keep on using my "old" Mac.Awesome, good for you. Enjoy your PC.
But your PC is better... why would you use a Mac?I will probably give my idle new PC away and keep on using my "old" Mac.
The hardware is newer, the longevity of the software is better, but I don't feel at ease using Windows. But your PC is better... why would you use a Mac?
I thought we were talking about phones? Mobile tech in phones is advancing much faster than PCs at the moment. The latest iPhones (both the 6s and SE) are about 10 times faster than the 4s. By comparison 2016 PC processors are on average only about 25% faster than their 2011 equivalents. I remember a time (back in the 90s) when PC technology was advancing very rapidly and a new version of Windows would render a 2 year old computer basically unusable and completely obsolete. You are comparing Apples to Oranges here. It's OK that it doesn't get iOS 10 then. It does not mean a device that still works well should not get timely security updates.

I understand. For what it's worth, I just bought a gaming PC and I'm loving it. Windows 10 isn't nearly the piece of junk that some people make it out to be. For me, it's worked perfectly. Super quick, runs everything I need it to. Give it some time, and you'll see the ways that it complements your Mac.The hardware is newer, the longevity of the software is better, but I don't feel at ease using Windows.
No. Windows is horrible inside.I understand. For what it's worth, I just bought a gaming PC and I'm loving it. Windows 10 isn't nearly the piece of junk that some people make it out to be. Wait, you just said PCs are better than Macs. I'm getting confused as to what we are actually talking about.No. Windows is horrible inside.
They are better at long time support, so it is normal businesses choose them.Wait, you just said PCs are better than Macs. I'm getting confused as to what we are actually talking about.
I used to do fresh re-installs of Windows on a yearly basis, but the registry has been managed much more effectively since from Vista and 7 onward. Combined with the vastly superior hardware of today, registry issues are virtually non-existent now. Believe me, I understand your hesitation... but I think you'll find that the state of Windows today is generally better than it's ever been. I love my Mac, but I certainly don't mind Windows. It starts with the Registry.
