The thing is, most ordinary people (non-technies) would be perfectly happy to keep an iPhone for years, oblivious to the new features. Apple don't want to give those people that choice. They force the update which they know perfectly well hobbles the device so it suddenly runs like crap

Except they don't force anything. My ipad 2 is on iOS 6 and shall remain there as long as I have it. Just because there's an upgrade option doesn't mean you have to blindly click it.

Not good. I was prepared to upgrade my 4S this year, but the new phones are just too large. The only other option for a new phone is the 5S, but Apple no longer sells the 64GB version, which I would require.

Arggh.

Look at the refurbished store at Apple.com or your carrier. The will have the 64GB for you.

I bet the first gen iPad Mini will have the same experience then as they have similar internals

Or the article could be crap! I hate to say it but performance is a personal and subjective thing. I still carry around an iPhone 4, not even an S and can live with it. Further on my iPad 3 parts of the OS are much faster than they where on iOS 7. Looking back at that iPhone 4 though, of course the screen is cramped. The cramped screen though is highly preferred relative to cramped pants pockets.

I think Apple should offer the choice--and they do:

- You want features and improvements (including future app updates) over speed: upgrade!

- You want to stick with what you have: don't.

(Most Android users are given no such choice. Your device is often OS-obsolete in less than 2 years.)

But what Apple should do is NOT EVER deliver a major update automatically to really older devices, even if automatic is the users's setting. Don't nudge people one way or the other in the decision if there's a major speed problem.

(Not saying this one's a "major" problem--hard to judge--but some big OS jumps are.)

There was no option for me to choose whether to automatically download or not...The update files are simply clogging up my phone's storage at the moment since iOS 7 came out...

Just updated my 4S, it doesn't seem much slower than 7.1. The only major difference is app launch times. Other than that the UI is behaving more or less similar to 7.1.

And this is why releasing the 6/6+ with 1GB of RAM is why I'll be waiting another upgrade cycle.

Has it been confirmed that both units come with just 1GB of RAM?

There where rumors of the Plus coming with 2GB. The problem there is I have absolutely no interest in the Plus. I may very well find myself also holding off for a 2GB upgrade also. I just not sure how much life is left in my 4.

It can't lag- thats the threshold of performance. When it lags, it's android level. iOS 7 killed my mothers iPhone 4, but 7.1 made it a little more tolerable. It is still a subpar experience though.

Oh well, planned obsolesence. I'm going to be replacing my mini with a refurb retina one pretty soon.

yes... but is safari snappier???

Actually it is. In some cases substantially faster. I know that this is a running joke with respect to Safari being snappier but Apple has put a huge amount of effort into modernizing WebKit; it is vastly improved on both the Mac and iOS devices.

It also adds new bugs on iOS8 so don't say I didn't say so.

Two and a half hours on from starting the download, the thin line under the apple logo has just, finally gone all the way across. 64GB 4S.

And then a black screen and back to Apple logo with greyed out line underneath.

Another 20 mins later, it's gone all the way across again and starts to boot, normal Apple logo. Gets to a white screen, reboots...

Apple logo again... boots to a 'Hello' screen, showing carrier ID at the top and signal and then just white screen.. I suspect this is going to be a long night.

Quick update - did a home/power button reset and am now through all the setup...

And it's pretty much settled down.

My point is that the iPhone 4 is still usable with iOS 7. Your saying it killed your mothers iPhone 4 can only be seen as a grossly misleading statement.

Planned obsolescence? I'm not even sure Apple thought that they could get to the 20nm level, with ARM, this fast when iPhone 4 came out. A7 & A8 are exceptionally fast considering they are running at cell phone power levels. It would be silly for Apple to not try to leverage some of that performance.

Please report back once you've had a chance to use it for a bit. :)

Sorry for the wait! Well, everything works fine. But unfortunately it's true that the animations are a little bit laggy. And the apps take longer to open.

Few updated apps are still crashed sometimes. Hopefully the updates to kill those bugs are available soon.

I actually wasn't expecting you to report back until tomorrow at the earliest. :D

Thanks for the report. As long as it's all still usable, then I think it's OK. a little bit of lag isn't a deal breaker. I remember when *new* phones had that little checkerboard video lag when scrolling web sites. We've gotten too used to instantaneous. :)

Well I couldn't put up with the app launch times on my 4S. Even in the phone or messages apps it takes a while and transitions aren't smooth at all . Restored to 7.1.2 and now it feels as it should.

Give it some time. iOS 8 is doing some optimization and indexing after installation (as with every beta).
Tomorrow it should work better.

Just tried to update my 5S and it put itself into recovery mode, so now I'm gonna lose all my data since I haven't backed up to iCloud in weeks since I'm out of storage. GREAT!

Unless you own a Nexus phone.

Unless you're geek enough to flash a custom firmware into your phone which is a pretty easy process.

My 2011 Samsung phone is running the latest Android version (with the new ART runtime). I know it's not a procedure which could be made by anyone like OTA updates. A Nexus phone provides a similar experience as iPhone. However, it usually lacks the most recent hardware improvements in the market -- just like iPhones.

This is true. I have a Nexus 4 on the latest KitKat update. I use it for my job and find the caller ID when m aking calls extremely useful in my job. When calling a customer one day. I was able to tell that the number we had was wrong Because of the name of the business that showed up and that it was out of state address.

No one else's Android phones do that because they can't or do not even know about checking for updates. No one uses iPhones where I work. Sad.

I'll let you know... on my 4th attempt to upgrade my iPad Mini! It keeps stopping during the install. On the other hand, it seems fine on my 4s - I downloaded it to test it for my husband because he's not upgrading his phone.
