The thing is, most ordinary people (non-technies) would be perfectly happy to keep an iPhone for years, oblivious to the new features. Apple don't want to give those people that choice. They force the update which they know perfectly well hobbles the device so it suddenly runs like crap
Planned obsolescence and OS upgrades walk together.
Not good. I was prepared to upgrade my 4S this year, but the new phones are just too large. The only other option for a new phone is the 5S, but Apple no longer sells the 64GB version, which I would require.
Arggh.
I bet the first gen iPad Mini will have the same experience then as they have similar internals
I think Apple should offer the choice--and they do:
- You want features and improvements (including future app updates) over speed: upgrade!
- You want to stick with what you have: don't.
(Most Android users are given no such choice. Your device is often OS-obsolete in less than 2 years.)
But what Apple should do is NOT EVER deliver a major update automatically to really older devices, even if automatic is the users's setting. Don't nudge people one way or the other in the decision if there's a major speed problem.
(Not saying this one's a "major" problem--hard to judge--but some big OS jumps are.)
And this is why releasing the 6/6+ with 1GB of RAM is why I'll be waiting another upgrade cycle.
I run through an adblocking proxy, which slows safari down a lot.
Or the article could be crap! I hate to say it but performance is a personal and subjective thing. I still carry around an iPhone 4, not even an S and can live with it. Further on my iPad 3 parts of the OS are much faster than they where on iOS 7. Looking back at that iPhone 4 though, of course the screen is cramped. The cramped screen though is highly preferred relative to cramped pants pockets.
yes... but is safari snappier???![]()
My point is that the iPhone 4 is still usable with iOS 7. Your saying it killed your mothers iPhone 4 can only be seen as a grossly misleading statement. It can't lag- thats the threshold of performance. When it lags, it's android level. iOS 7 killed my mothers iPhone 4, but 7.1 made it a little more tolerable. It is still a subpar experience though.
Oh well, planned obsolesence. I'm going to be replacing my mini with a refurb retina one pretty soon.
Please report back once you've had a chance to use it for a bit.![]()
Sorry for the wait! Well, everything works fine. But unfortunately it's true that the animations are a little bit laggy. And the apps take longer to open.
Few updated apps are still crashed sometimes. Hopefully the updates to kill those bugs are available soon.
What a disappointing site.
Wow. I had no idea that my 4S was so worthless.
Unless you own a Nexus phone.
Unless you're geek enough to flash a custom firmware into your phone which is a pretty easy process.
My 2011 Samsung phone is running the latest Android version (with the new ART runtime). I know it's not a procedure which could be made by anyone like OTA updates. A Nexus phone provides a similar experience as iPhone. However, it usually lacks the most recent hardware improvements in the market -- just like iPhones.
