I finally decided to install iOS8 on my iPhone 4s.Let's see.

Hopefully it's good.Finger crossing.

iOS 8 GM runs perfectly fine on the 4S.

iOS 7.0 was much worse in terms of performance/bugginess on the 4S (that was fixed with 7.1).

The arstechnica article doesn't even say that 4S users should avoid iOS 8.

Despite the problems we ran into, we think the answer for most people will still be "yes." And if you happen to be using an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5C, the next-newest iOS 8 devices, go ahead and upgrade without fear; we didn't notice any of the same speed problems on those phones that we did on the 4S.

I guess MacRumors first read the ridiculous Gizmodo article entitled "Don't put iOS 8 on your 4S" which referred to the ars article (which again, doesn't say to avoid iOS 8 on the 4S) and decided to link the ars article instead, assuming they came to the same conclusion.

I have an Android device, not an iPhone. Custom ROMs are always buggy, the process is a pain (especially if your device isn't officially supported by CM).

Like it or not, you are not a better engineer than those at LG or Samsung. Almost everybody that I know that messes with OC and DC always end up with bricks.

The other end up installing the stock rom again, to get rid of the endless bugs.

I never ended up with a brick when I flashed mine, and I tried out dozens of roms and several kernels.

Problem is, most of them were either rubbish or "you're on your own" abandonware. ;)

Just updated my 4s because YOLO.

Everything seems ok so far.

Gonna wait for iOS 8.0.1 for my 5s to be safe.

The word suggestions will probably take up a significant amount of space.

To be honest, I've always felt on a 3.5" display the keyboard, even in iOS7 did quickly become a problem after a few lines of text.

Glassed Silver:mac

That's a good point and it does take a little more space. Still not too bad and with the much improved autocorrect accuracy its worth it. Much like swiftkey now. Can type fast and it corrects most errors with way better results. There is some lag overall but iOS 7 had it too until 7.1. Maybe 8.x will further improve that aspect.

I've barely noticed any difference from IOS7, though I've always had 'reduce motion' switched on.

I have a 4S with the iOS 8 GM and it seems fine. I've always had reduced motion on. Has yours crashed at all since upgrading?

This GM has crashed on me and froze too. Was wondering should I just downgrade to iOS 7 and wait for an update to iOS 8?

*edit

I was going to downgrade anyway to install the public release of iOS 8.

Planned obsolescence and OS upgrades walk together.

It's because the world changes. It has happened with everything on the electronic era. HW speed improving in performance constantly and software is ever demanding more and more too.

A three year old cellphone is old. Every person I see with a 3 year old handset feels that is slow and old. No matter brand.

Why stop the continuos change?

I tried using SwiftKey on my test-bed iPhone 4S running iOS 8 but I could barely get anywhere in the tutorial. It kept wanting me to hit the "Note" predicted word and instead I was just getting hits on the keys below, such as T and Y.

So, my everyday iPhone 5S will get iOS 8 and I'll revert the 4S back to 7.1.2.

I'm on iOS 8 GM for the past week. It actually feels better than iOS 7.1.2 most of the time. And it's just 8.0 release.

This whole "screen size issues" is just overblown and ridiculous.

Let's see how it goes now that we actually have extensions available.

I'm not having any issues with ios 8 on my 4S. It was a tiny bit slow at first, but that quickly disappeared. I had to move some apps around the make the screen look a bit more spacious, but I wouldn't say that was a deal breaker.

When I first installed iOS 8, it was pretty bad.

But I disabled transparency and turned reduced motion on, and that pretty much solved all the problems. Just slightly slower than iOS 7 now, fine with me.

On board for one more year with the ol' 4s!

iOS's wide range of support for older/newer devices is already much better than Android can say for their devices.

... The fragmentation of OS versions across all Android devices is ghastly.

I'm always amused by these type of posts. A mere hint of something wrong with Apple products or services brings out the "but the other guy" excuses.

I'm pretty sure the 4S owners really appreciate the PSA on Android. It's a good thing they can console themselves in the tribulations of Android users. Cuz I know the only thing that could make me feel better about my own possible misery is knowing someone else using an entirely different product may be affected as well.

I bolded possible because YMMV with this install. Some will see unacceptable degradation, some will see acceptable performance drop, and others be fine. Either way, is pointing out issues of an entirely unrelated OS is really helpful for a 4S owner?

Well,I've just installed iOS 8 on my iPhone 4S and there is absolutely no issues whatsoever.

This article is false and misleading.I installed it with hesitation after reading this, but i'm glad I did.
There is really no increased lag or slowdown compared to iOS 7.

It's solid.I recommend all 4s users to upgrade to iOS 8.

OS upgrade = Things get slower, buyer thinks about buying new phone soon.
No OS upgrade = Phone remains as zippy as it always did, lacks new features. Buyer happy enough as phone is still zippy and may buy a new phone at some point.

That's how I see it and the reason why I hear folk buying a new phone, "it's running slow these days". You wouldn't expect Apple to let iOS 8 run as smooth on a 3 year old device as well as it did on their new flagship model!

Problem is, my 4s isn't "zippy" on iOS7 as it is. It WAS fairly zippy with iOS6, Apple scammed us

Except they don't force anything. My ipad 2 is on iOS 6 and shall remain there as long as I have it. Just because there's an upgrade option doesn't mean you have to blindly click it.

Except Apple does not allow users to downgrade is kind of forcing on users. Apple may not foring you to upgrade, but Apple does not give you option when you need to restore your iPhone, it just does not allow you to restore to earlier version nor Apple allows you to downgrade

The problem is that it not always the the case. Newer version of OS does not have to slow down the hardware, in fact, Microsoft managed to create Windows Phone 8.1 runs perfectly on older phones with 512MB of memory.

Great, already started downloading it.

Same, I absentmindedly just started the update without thinking it through. I hope it works well enough to not have to restore it, which I'm glad I did a back-up just before the update.

Edit: My update downloaded then returned an error 75% through the installation stating that 'the update failed'...?

Maybe I got lucky :)

I'll wait a few days for the reports to come in on performance with the 4S.

Tell that to my windows phone 1, which wasn't upgradeable. Not that I mind, since it was a backup phone.

As a note, I wish windows phone did better. If I wasn't all ios I'd probably use it. There are a lot of good ideas in it - but it falls down when managing apps. I have a whole bunch (100+) and their UI just can't handle it...assuming I could find that many apps.

Definitely have to wait, tried the yahoo weather widget it sticks out from the left but that's cause the OS takes that small space I presume, it sure does optimisation or it looks weird.

4S feels laggy by a bit, almost 1 sec delay or lower not much of an issue but with many a widgets on, it'll be overkill as I got low memory reports.

Time to get my hands on 6, or the Plus can't bloody decide! :D

Wow based on this (and others) articles you would think Apple had come along and sponsored them to say something along the lines of... "While the iPhone 4S was once great iOS 8 is a must and so its upgrade time!!"

After first after installing IOS8 the performance was OK but after using it for a few days ( GM of course ) the performance degraded and became erratic. Some times its OK, other times horrible.

Spotlight can be very slow - I enter, for example "Notes" and can take up to 20 to 30 seconds for results to return.

I'd agree with this article - think twice before upgrading a 4S.

This is it. iOS 7.0 was brutally slow at all UI navigation. 7.1 made it better, but it's still so unresponsive compared with 6. It really disrupts the experience when the phone deliberately ignores taps/swipes/button presses. I got burned by the temptation of the new features and look, but I learned my lesson.

A lot of people are saying that it "runs fine", but that's what they said about 7.0... Sure, it may still work if you use your phone nice and slowly.

Except Apple does not allow users to downgrade is kind of forcing on users....

Agreed. There really isn't much reason for 7/8 to be much slower than 5/6. The animation delays are worse than lag, in my opinion.

For all the talk about how optimized iOS is, Windows Phone 8.1 is definitely more so. Doesn't take much hardware to run it quickly and smoothly.

8.0 on 4S since GM release

5 days? I can says yes there are some noting slow responses but does not make the phone unusable. I am enjoying what 8.0 has brought to the 4S and I understand what is lost. (Basically hardware lacking)

I did have battery drain after update, but I let it die and then fully charged it. Battery ilasts much longer now.

I will upgrade to 6+ in 6 months. I'm going to forward the job calls to personal iPhone and lose the Android.

Runs fine for me. It only lags first 30min after install, maybe its doing some cleanup process maybe, i saw it took a while to setup iCloud drive. Its 2hrs now i've installed and i've brushed through quite a few apps, settings, photos messages app, didn't find any issue, its as good as iOS7.
