haha this phone scares the **** out of me every time it vibrates

i'm not sure it's worth returning as everything else about the phone is perfect....rare for me

Call 1-800-APL-CARE. Explain the problem to them and ask for an advance replacement. They will ask you for a credit card number to put a hold on, the hold will be for the FULL, UNSUBSIDIZED price of the phone. It's not a problem if you put it on a credit card you don't depend on. They will send you a replacement and once they receive yours back they will remove the hold. There is a $15 fee I believe, but they almost always waive it.

an advanced replacement of the same phone with the same vibration sound... they are all the same! They all have the issue/or non-issue depends on opinion.

yea, i really do think it's just how they are designed....although I do wish it wasn't as loud. I wish it sounded like it does when you give it a "death grip"

I may just pick up a pentalobe screwdriver and crack it open to see if there is anything rattling around that could be re-situated. It's possible the plastic battery tab is flapping against the case when it vibrates.

I'm so deathly afraid of the Apple return cycle that I don't want to exchange it if nothing else is wrong. It's purely a physical issue of two pieces of metal vibrating against each other....should be a simple fix.

I have the exact same thing.

Hold/squeeze the bottom right next the home button, sound goes away.

I don't really want to take it back to apple as sounds like ill just end up with the same "problem" and dunno if they'll take it back for a strange buzz/vibrate that they probably can't hear in store.

If anyone opens it up and fixes it, let us know :)

I agree, I may consider getting a pentalobe driver also, as I'm good at fixing electronic devices. I also would be afraid to exchange it through Apple and get a worse iPhone 4S, ala a yellow tinted screen, because the screen I have now is perfect (knock on wood)

Moral of the story is, apple comes up with new and unique ways for you to hold your phone to avoid issues.

I bet the ladies love that in their pocket. lol Sounds like a sex toy.

Lol, good one. And what do you mean by pocket :p Does your 4S sound like this?

Don't have a 4S. No reason when I already had a 4. (Puts flame suit on and prepares for battle. Bring it on all you pretentious fanboys).

Guys might like the vibratory action as well. "Every time I get a call I get a semi."

I miss my ATT iPhone 4's perfect vibrate :(

Got a SGS2 right now. You adjust the sensitivity for your pleasure. But it sure as hell doesn't sound like a novice giving oral to a vibrator. "Too much teeth is bad!"

Me too. It seems like this is a common thing, unfortunately. Mine makes this very annoying sound when it vibrates. Sounds like a buzzer, more than anything. I prefer the soft humming of the iPhone 4 (which the 4S can do, ONLY if you're holding it tight).

If this 'issue' ends up getting 'fixed' and newer handsets don't have this situation, does that allow us to request a replacement?

I also wish the camera (or whatever it is) didn't make that 'loose' sound when you tap the upper part of the phone. This, too, has been discussed in other threads. If it weren't for these two things, I'd be 100% happy with my phone.

Well, that's one way to describe it.
LOL... that just gave me some bizarre visuals, thanks!!

I ordered an iPhone 4 toolkit with 1 day shipping, when it gets here I'm going to attempt to fix the problem and might try to record a video of how to do it.

16GB 4S AT&T
The vibrate seems pretty loud, but that I can live with. What I don't like is the rattle noise that comes from the lower right corner when it's on vibrate. Definitely something loose. I have an appointment with Apple on Thursday morning so we'll see how that goes.

Unforunately there are no Apple stores near me so I'll have to fix it myself :(

Edit: Here is what seems to be the issue(Click to enlarge):

I got my iPhone 4 toolkit today, and to no avail wasn't able to fix the issue  I tried a myriad of ideas/solutions, such as putting thin pieces of foam on top of the motor to act as a sandwhich in between it and the backplate. I even cut a foam earplug in half hoping that it would work but it didn't. I'm all out of ideas :(

Anyone returned theirs to the Aple store and got one that doesnt make this cheap ass sound?

It doesnt even take a lot of pressure to stop i from making the noise. Just rest a finger to the right of the home botom, front or back and the phone all of a sudden sounds solid when vibrating.

It's possible the motor is just cheaply made and rattling against it's own enclosure. I personally think it is due to the cheap mount solution (adhesive) used to attach the motor to the aluminum frame. I think it was unevenly applied and causing the motor to come in contact with the frame instead of a nice even layer of adhesive.

I have a Genius bar appointment on Sunday, although I'm not sure whether I want to go; I'm not sure whether I want to risk getting a phone with a yellow tint or any other issues when mine is perfectly fine apart from the vibrating issue.

That said, I keep wondering whether the vibrator in all 4S' is like this..
