iPhone 4S vibrate soundclip

I did a partial disassemble and could not quiet the buzzing..

Tried several methods like a soft, spongey material around the motor to quell the vibrating....but that didn't work.

This is very strange considering even a small amount of pressure from my finger would stop the buzzing. It's my theory that the bottom of the vibration motor is vibrating just enough against the aluminum frame to cause the buzzing and pressure from the back of the motor isn't enough to stop it.

I am not going to remove the logic board.....either I need to live with the noise or try for an exchange.

Had the same issue. Went to an apple store and they acknowledged the issue and gave me a new one. Was slightly worried about getting a faulty screen, but it's perfect.

It's very annoying and buzz like on my iPhone 4S, does anyone else have this issue? I uploaded an mp3 of the annoying noise:

What's the point of vibrate?

OMG that's right!

To get your attention.

If it annoys you then Apple did a good job, don't you think?

Not really a good job. Both my wife and I nearly had heart attacks every morning. And I always keep my phone on top of a soft case, qhich should reduce the noise produced by the vibration. When I showed it to a genius today, she didn't even have to hold the phone to her ear and that' s in a loud store. She understood right away how loud the noise must be if it goes off at night. The new phone is great though ;)

Like I said, Apple acknowledged this to be a faulty phone and replaced it.

I've absolutely had it with this vibration from my Black 4S. I'm on my third service replacement in a week, all have the problem, plus this iPhone has the worst yellow screen tint I have seen.

I've finally cracked.. I'm returning this one today and waiting in line..again.. for a white one. I have yet to find a white one with the problem.

i've scheduled a genius bar appointment for today.

I got lucky and didn't get a yellow screen, so I am really afraid my replacement will have one

I have a white 16GB that has this problem. I brought it to the genius bar yesterday and the tech opened it up and found nothing wrong. He said that the phones have different parts and some motors are just stronger than others. Time to schedule another appointment. :/

So got my White iPhone 4S after returning my black one. No issues whatsoever. Vibrate is even quieter compared to my iPhone 4 (AT&T), screen is "whiter" than my iPhone 4 and couldn't be happier. Took 4 hours at Apple because I ordered my Black online so they had to change a lot of things in the computer in order for an instore exchange. Finally done!

mine started doing it also yesterday off and on. I called today and they are shipping out a replacement. My battery also sucks so hopefully this one will be better. I thought about going to the Apple store but the nearest is over an hour away.

I made an apt., the genius opened it up and "fixed" it. Its not fixed. They didn't replace it.

Is it possible to return it (its still under 30 days), and exchange it for a new one?

Called apple support again. Super nice guy set me up with a new replacement and a free HD Antiglare screen protector!!

The trick is to be patient and persistent ;]

Mines got the same problem...

Glad I found this thread, thought I was going crazy but the vibrator sounds like **** in my phone, very annoying :/

Time to go to the 'geniuses'

I went in to Apple Store today regarding this specific issue. They were nice enough to exchange it for a new one (out of a normal, new box) and acknowledged that it was, indeed, a little too loud but also warned me that all phones vary when it comes to the vibration strength/sound. I think they did it more to appease than anything else, plus the fact that I've only had it for nine days probably helped my case.

I hate to sound like an ungrateful brat, but it still makes a very audible noise. Granted, it's not as loud and annoying as the first one, which sounded just like an electric beard trimmer, but it still makes a noise that my iPhone 4 didn't. I did try listening to the display models at the store (including the new one I just got) but with all the freaking commotion of the 100+ people that were there, I couldn't hear ****.

Basically, if you're having this issue my advice is to let it go and not dwell on it. Had I noticed the new one would make a lound buzzing sound as well, I would've not exchanged it. Oh, and this one, too, makes the "loose" sound (discussed in other threads) supposedly associated with the camera, when you tap it on the upper rear part.

Same issue here in Australia

Hi guys

Here is my story about the iPhone 4S and the vibrate:

First phone: Vibrate switch was loose.. when it vibrated it had a high pitch noise (no buzz) - they replaced it (had no stock - had to pick it up 3 days later!)

2nd phone: PERFECT in every way. Was working fine and then the next morning the vibrate was BUZZING loud like the audio clips in this thread. Took it back to the genius bar that day. Guy said it sounded too loud and replaced it on the spot.

3rd phone: Couldn't hear in the store if the new phone had the vibrate issue so left the store and went to my car to test it. It was just as bad as the one I just returned!! SO annoying. So I went back to the store and told the guy. He spoke to the manager and tried to convince me it was "in the boundaries of normal". I told him I'm not happy with it and want it replaced. He replaced it on the spot.

4th phone: Perfect vibrate! Yay! Was very happy until that night I noticed a lil mark under the glass near the front camera. You can only see it in direct light. After all the other problems I'm just going to live with it. Don't want to risk a phone with a dodgy vibrate again!

So annoying that I've had to go through this. First time I've ever had a problem with Apple build quality. :(

The mark under the glass annoys me cause its such a expensive phone though :(

Maybe I'll risk taking it back in a month or so when hopefully the vibrate issue is resolved.

Same issue here, two for two on a Black 64GB 4S

I have a black 64GB iPhone 4S. It was a preorder from Apple. The first week, the vibrate sounded normal similar to my old iPhone 4 32GB. All the sudden, every time it vibrates, I hear the same sound as the audio clip attachment above. When I lightly hold the bottom right on either side, it stops the rattling sound. After an hour phone call, I got Apple to send me a replacement. It has the exact same sound. I have a Speck Candyshell Card case, and I tried stuffing a piece of paper towel between the bottom right back of the phone and the case. It didn't work with different layers of cushion. I had high hopes as a very light touch to either the front or back quiets the issue. I am afraid to try for another. I bet even if I get a quiet one, it will start doing it in a few weeks as my first one did. Looks to be a design issue causing this model to be prone to start the issue sooner or later. Great job with QA Apple. I guess I have to put up with the annoying abnormal vibrate sound.

----------

Maybe next year they will come out with a iPhone 4Si ("i" for improved") instead of an iPhone 5. Hopefully the "improved" version will have a new feature of this problem fixed...

I guess the vibrate is the only thing Im a little bummed out about. Way too soft. Oddly enough, my old iP4s vibrate was too loud. I just cant hear the 4S from across the room like my 4. And I HATE hearing a ring. Oh well, maybe it will get "looser" and louden up in the future (or there will be a app/fix).

Some people are never happy! :)

I'm in the exact same boat as you, 32gb black launch, a few days ago (Friday) mine started to get loud and I can fix it the same way. Apple sent me a replacement yesterday which came with a bigger issue. (It could not hold a 3g signal at my house) so I sent that back today, and will be calling once it is received by them to get another sent out.

This is my first iPhone and so far the experience has not been that plesent. I would drive to the Apple store and swap it, but that would take over 2hrs of my life and my gas. I'd rather have them FedEx the new one to me after all I did pay them alot of money for the phone.

My 4s had a battery charging issue so I had it replaced today. Now this one has this stupid vibrate issue. It is seriously so freaking loud. It literally does sound like the vibrator is tapping the backside of the glass inside. I'm going to another apple store on Friday to get another replacement. Ugh so annoying. I'll be sure to test out the home to make sure it's fine before I leave and sign for it.
