It's actually the other way around. I really want to get the 5 (there's really no rational reason) but my mind says the 4S. So honestly, I want someone to convince me to get the 5.

Aside from durability, is there any reason you're saying the 5 will last longer than the 4S? The 4S will be a brand new phone too (brand new in the sense that it's unused).

This was one of the factors I was considering too but I don't think I'd buy any accessories. I can't think of any use for them.

I don't think the scratches/scuffs would bother me. Does scuffing the antenna band hurt the signal quality or anything?

There are a few advantages to 5 that I have noticed so far. One is how light it is. That is nice. The other is that it has 2x the ram....so things don't fall out of memory so easily...which is very nice! I'm sure over the next couple years the extra power in the A6 will become useful too.

Nope .. It does not .. but don't tell me you're getting an iPhone without expecting and appreciate a bit about build quality and aesthetic. I would want my iPhone to look good for as long as possible without worrying too much. As in I don't want my car get scratched although I know .. shoot happens.

I definitely appreciate the build quality and aesthetic but realistically I wouldn't expect my phone to remain perfect.

I remember how paranoid I was when I first got my Macbook Pro. I was going crazy because I thought there were scars on the screen - it later turned out to be dirt. And I don't want to repeat that exercise now. So I'm just telling myself that the scratches/scuffs are going to be okay :D

Hmm. What do you mean by "things don't fall out of memory so easily"? The multi-tasking?

The iPhone 5 is going to last a lot longer - it's much more durable and water resistant - if you get hit by a car and roll into a puddle the phone will fare much better than you :D

Is it officially water resistant? I mean, does Apple advertise this as water resistant? Or are you going off the videos?

Gahh, I think I'm going to splurge and just get the 5

I-PHONE 4S the better choice

I think for a start Apple I phone 4s will be best for you and you can certainly go for it and if you need specs difference then you can check,so my choice is for apple i phone4s.:)

multi-tasking and safari.

On the 4s, the extremely low amount of ram means that most of the time if you start up your audio will default back to music player and safari will be refreshing your pages a lot instead of just going back to where you left off. 5 seems to hold things a lot longer.

My audio on my 4S starts right where I left off, same with safari. What are you talking about? Everything starts where I left off. Thanks for giving false information. I've never had a problem with my RAM, it's more than sufficient.

For $99 more get the 5. It's faster, has more memory, and will last you longer running the latest an most demanding apps.

Not strictly true ... at least not in the short term.

Due to the quick fire (annual) release of new iPhones and other iOS devices, the latest generation never gets pushed to the limits right away, if within the first 12 months. Also, as the install base of "hand down" devices increases, developers don't want to make their apps exclusive to the latest generation at the risk of losing sales from previous generations. It's evident all over the App Store and has been for years.

Look at Infinity Blade II last year, the 4S demo at the keynote. On the 4S we got light shafts, particles, and a slightly better frame rate. To the uneducated and naked eye, the 4 and 4S versions were identical. If Chair had REALLY used the power of the 4S, the differences would have been far more evident.

The likes of Real Racing 3 will look near identical on 4S and 5 aside from some fancier reflections, eye candy basically, and stuff you need to go out your way to look for as opposed to standing out.

The 4S is already running the latest and most demanding apps, and will continue to do for the next 12 months.

the 4s is more compact and does the exact same thing.. if you want thinner, taller & possibly more durable depending on the angle it falls...get the 5.

also: the 4S has been tried & tested, so you know what to expect.. the 5 is sort of inconclusive at the moment.

i like the size of the 4 better. the iphone 5 is too long. my thunb has a hard time reaching the top of the page in safari.

The 5 should reap higher dividends then the 4S on the re-sale market 2 years from now.

This is the line of thought I'm struggling with. How is it more future proof? OS updates, right? And the 5 will be able to run newer apps better.
Yep, and a really powerful chip. And the new 4-inch display will become the golden standard when developers create apps.

Oh okay. I didn't think about this at all. Thanks so much :) I really appreciate your perspective :)

Since I've never owned a smartphone, I haven't thought too much about the performance - since anything over my current phone will be a huge upgrade. I didn't think about the new apps until I created this thread. Ya I'd probably miss out on newer apps designed for the 4 inch screen.

Thanks everyone! :D
