Sorry, Did not mean to come across like that.

If you wouldn't mind, what splitter cable do you have?

30 Pin -> USB & 1/8" Stereo (Called BMW iPod Interface Adapter)
or
30 Pin -> USB & 1/8" Stereo & Accessory Port/Cigarette Lighter Plug (Called BMW iPhone Charging Cable)

I'm Just trying to understand, because on the BMW accessory finder those both show up on several model years including 2011, but disappear when you select 2012 model year.

Also side note, when I tested with my car I first tried an aftermarket cable I happened to have near the garage and it did not work, but when I used an genuine apple cable it works no problem.

The interface adapter

I got a Sony (xplod?) stereo w/ aux port and USB for iPod that i bought back in 2009.... I'd assume it's still going to work with the new usb cable............. unless i didnt read something someone already posted.

I have an 2011 SRX and I can control both music and phone using the dash and steering wheel controls find when connected to the 30-pin with my 4S.

Really?Maybe it is the connection I am using and not the SRX - although the user manual says it is compatible with the iPhone 4, but not 4s. Are you just using the usb connector that came with the iPhone? I am using something else but I will try that today. I presume Bluetooth does not work for you either?

I have a 2010 Civic, its just a standard USB connection. Really hope this works without causing difficulty.

2009 civic here.

This is what a used nano is for. I bought one off of my old roomate in college. Loaded with music, stuffed in center console. only comes out to put new tunes on and when I cut the grass.

I'm not convinced that plugging my iPhone into my USB on my civic doesn't mess with it in some ways. Seems like it messes with the battery meter and stuff. I just leave it in my pocket and rarely plug it into my car.

how does this work exactly ....

i have a 08 jeep srt with the iphone connector which my 4s works perfectly i can even watch video....

You connect it to your 30 pin connector and it transmits a bluetooth signal. You connect to it with your iPhone and you will be able to stream audio wirelessly.

Think of it as Airplay for your car. Except you can't do video.

Havent tried Bluetooth for anything other then phone useage. Im using an Apple 30 pin to usb cable plugged into the usb port in the center console. Both my wife's and my 4S hasn't had a problem. I can pull up full ipod menus and change tracks via the dash and steering wheels controls.

Bluetooth compress the audio...

If sound quality is no big deal to you then ya, "bluetooth that sucka all day, yo."

But if you are an audiophile, you are gonna want to usb that sucka all day...yo.

Bluetooth for you Audio..... DUDE! Thats like recommending Monster headphones to Audiophiles....

If you know a thing of two about music or really care about it, cable all the way!

Some of you must be FEMBOT's and have ears like my mother (always got caught coming home at 0-Dark-Hundred).

I can appreciate high quality sound, especially when I was video editing, having studio quality headphones was imperative. But in the car? Between the road noise, ect. unless you are building a car for SEMA, I won't ever be able to tell the difference. Plus my truck cycles through songs fast on BT then it can with a direct connection.

Bluetooth audio sounds muddled and hissy compared to the hard-wired iPod option. It's okay in a pinch, but I don't recommend it long-term if you care about sound quality.

If I were on vacation in a rent-a-car I'd deal with Bluetooth audio for a week for the sake of convenience, but it's not a permanent solution.

an ipod is the only thing that ever gets connected to my car, so no issues here..

Same for me. I've got a BWM wireless key fob and an iPhone with Bluetooth, most times I leave both in my pockets or briefcase and never have to take them out or plug them into anything.

BMW offers an apps suite that includes Facebook and Twitter and some like those so much that they bury their iPhone's in their armrests even for the shortest of drives.

Excerpt:

The fact that the Lightning port uses eight purely digital pins calls into question whether the Lightning adapter would actually work with many cars' existing iPod or even USB ports. Current Kia and Hyundai models, and older BMW models, use an adapter cable that feeds the analog audio signal from the 30-pin connector to a 1/8-inch audio input, and a USB port to feed control signals between iPhone and car. Lightning does not have the capability to send an analog signal, so Apple's adapter will not work in those vehicles.

My new Audi A6 is in question and damn but if this is important to me....

More to follow I guess
Oh well, still have an iPod to plug into the whip:p

I love how you keep commenting on what you "believe" and how every other journalist and article is wrong.

This is about ANY device that uses Video Out is ****ed for now. Any consumer would be unhappy if they are overlooked or must pay a premium to get back to what they have had as "normal".

You reek of bitterness in your posts which is why nothing you reply with gets an ounce of cred in my book.

Anyone who feels a need to list the prices of their Apple devices on an APPLE fanatic site where almost everyone knows the pricing gets zero ounce of cred in my book. Real ballers don't need to advertise the fact they have material possessions.

Anyways Hippyshakes nice Oolong Grey Prestige! Happen to see your post in Audiworld. I just went in to the dealership 2 weeks ago to swap out the blue for the red cable so that I can get video out and album art. Of course the dealer charged me a fee even though both cables cost the same...typical but wth it was nominal. Of course with the new phone it has rendered the new cable totally useless unless I use my first gen ipod touch. The thing is I wanted to take videos on the phone and be able to play it back in the car. Oh well like most said first world problems.

Here's the skinny on this. And I wish I knew about this earlier before I preordered my iPhone 5.

After the Keynote, I sent an email to Tim Cook. While I did not get an email back, they did call me and I just spoke with a representative. He gave me good news and bad news.

Good news: the adaptor will allow you to hook your phone up to your 30-pin connector to your car and your music will play out through the speakers.

Bad news: you will no longer be able to navigate through your songs and play them via the screen on your dashboard.

I hope this has clarified this issue for most. I see this as bad news, but at least something I can live with. That said, I probably would have held off on preordering.

My hope is that BMW comes out with a new adaptor in due time.

They actually called you back? Phenomenal customer service.

Which other organization bothers calling back a random email sender regarding a question about an adapter?

:) Cheers. Yeah I'm going to have an ever growing cable drawer now including a blue and red Audi one along with my far too many 30pin cords. I should have my phone Friday and will post on the Audi forums (what works and what doesn't (even though I think I pretty much know already!)

Yes, first they emailed me. Then they found my phone number somehow and called me. I didn't leave my phone number in my initial email. They must've looked me up in their system. I agree. Excellent CS.

da faq?

I have a 2011 Hyundai Elantra....... hope this isn't true.

Although I use my iPod classic most of the time, but was planning on using my new iPhone and plugging into the USB port for charging and when using for navigation on long trips.

And bluetooth,

that ***** cray man. Maybe if I was deaf..........

sorry I like my high quality audio and not converting to to crappy radio quality after I spend so much time and money preserving it's true sound.

Tracks don't need to be in ALAC to tell the difference. Songs purchased from iTunes is enough to tell a difference in my car's sound system, Burmester.

You sir, have a premium sound system. All I was trying to say was that most stock speakers that come in your average run of the mill cars these days (not Audi, BMW, Lexus, Telsa, whatever) those speakers are not going to be as clear as a premium system so BT and AUX in will work for the average person who doesn't spend $70K+ on a car or an extra $10,000 on the sound system alone.

Agreed on the potential loss in audio quality with the bluetooth adapter. Anyone know what it's bandwidth is, and how comparable it is to the audio quality? If it can transmit above 320kbs, or atleast 128kbs, then it would essentially be the same as plugging it in for the bandwidth needed.

These ebay adapters look cheap as hell, and out-dated. Is there an alternative of better quality, and maybe going to Bluetooth 4.0 instead of 2.0? ;)

Just checking if any early receivers of the iPhone 5 have had a chance to check direct and BT integration yet

Great news for you and Chris. Ford sync systems use USB connect that is digital - no analog is required. So the iPhone will work with a Lightning to USB cable. The newer cars also support bluetooth connect. I have a Edge with MyFord Touch and have been using iOS 6 in it for the entire time of the beta without any problem, in fact iOS 6 adds support for the Bluetooth MAP protocol allowing Sync to read you your texts.

VERIFIED!!!! Plugged my iPhone 5 into my 2011 Ford Focus with Microsoft Sync. Works perfectly! Caller ID and song titles come up on the screen without issue. Bluetooth also works fine.
