Just because the iPhone 4S is selling well, doesn't mean the upgrade itself (from iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S) wasn't disappointing.

It was extremely disappointing. But why did ip4 users feel like they needed to upgrade after a year anyway???

This article is unprofessional and lack of detail assessment of product being reviewed.

The writer made a big deal of having a big screen phone. but he does not understand the other important aspect: user experience. having a large screen makes using the phone with one hand impossible and impractical. if you have an average hand, reaching to the other side using your thumb is not possible. Beside, this is the pocketable device that you carry every where, not an ipad where you carry in a bag.

Whoa there... apparently only people that are dissatisfied with the iPhone and agree with the OP are allowed to post in this thread ;)

Calling people iSheep says far more about you than the people you are attempting to belittle IMO

Yep, arrogant, self important people like to look down from their high horse on others for their choices. (and I don't buy that iSheep was said, "just for fun")

After some thought today I will not be buying the next iPhone. The only thing that keeps me with a iPhone is the music apps. I have a iPhone 4 and 4s that I will keep around or sell for a iPod touch to use my music apps on.

I need more freedom, bigger and better screen When it comes to bullying the internet and getting stuff done on a phone. I need a mini computer in my pocket with power. I cant wait on iOS any longer.

When it comes to music apps the iPhone cant be beat, but everything else is fair game. Android seems to be going in the direction I want to be headed in. Tired of running in place.

I didn't upgrade.

I suppose we're spoiled now. 2010 was an awesome Apple year: an entire new product (namely the iPad), an entire new iPhone (iPhone 4, which I personally consider the biggest iPhone upgrade thusfar) and an entirely new iPod line-up.

The year after, we saw the iPad 2 which was quite a good upgrade, and the iPhone 4S (which I consider a disappointing upgrade). Also, we didn't see any new iPods.

This year has been disappointing as well. The onliest new iOS device I can think off is the iPad 3 which is thicker and heavier (okay, given: it does have a retina display). Of course, the year isn't over yet, but the 'Apple seas' have been... calm... so far.

I think, the thing is... a lot of people were wow'ed when the iPhone 4 was leaked. It seemed unrealistic: would Apple really add that many features in just one generation? Now we're two years further, and Apple is - in some ways - definitely lagging behind in the hardware area (whereas the iPhone 4 felt at least very up-to-date, if not ahead of others). Same for iOS: when the iPhone 4 launched we got iOS 4. It brought lots of awesome things (like personalisation, multitasking, folders, etc.) - we're talking about big new features here. Now we get iOS 6... the update is okay, but there aren't really any big, new features... and we're getting used to the iOS look.

That's the problem. We're spoiled.

I get you when you consider the leaks about the next-gen iPhone disappointing, but how can you have a verdict about a device that hasn't even been announced yet?

Henry Blodget is being a crybaby

I read the article earlier today, and couldn't believe this guy was whining about a product that hasn't even been announced/released yet. How can one be so annoyed? This paragraph was the bottom line to me:

But, as I feared a couple of years ago when I realized the lengths Apple was going to to build a closed system with "network effects," I'm also kind of stuck with Apple now, given that our entire household has standardized on it. If I switched to Samsung, I'd have to learn how to use something new. And none of my iTunes stuff and passwords would work. So the sad truth is that I'm going to buy an iPhone 5 even if it's an inferior phone.

He goes to such great lengths to describe how the SG3 is superior, yet he clearly values a number of things that iOS/iPhone/Apple offers. This article could have easily been about evaluating, for this writer, what are the relative pros and cons of going with SG3 vs. a 'rumored' iPhone 5. It could have easily been thoughtful, and perhaps even provoke an interesting discussion. Instead, he comes off as a whiny brat unable to choose which awesome phone to get. Woe is Henry Blodget.

Chances are it will probably be exactly what we've seen and the iSheep will still line up for it, despite having a perfectly working 4S.

Apple will make it worthwhile and use big words like, "Most amazing iPhone yet", "brand new" and "most powerful iPhone ever" to convince the iSheep they are making the right choice. ;)

I don't doubt that there are people out there that will blindly buy any Apple product simply because it's Apple... I'm shocked at the number of people I know that buy iPhones and don't even know half of the 'basic' things that they can do with that... but iSheep is fairly derogatory all the same. Just because I have an iPhone (and a mac laptop) does not mean I did so unthinkingly and without researching my other options. In my opinion, throwing around the term iSheep is just as careless and unthoughtful as the very people you are trying to denigrate, joking or not.

Thankfully, most Apple products do actually 'just work', fancy marketing or not. If there was no substance behind the hype, this bubble would have burst long ago.

Your post is at once more informative and concise than the article </hat tip>. I think about going Android every now and then, but from what I can tell, the music syncing/playback/handling is just nowhere close to the iPhone, and that makes all the difference with me.

Cheers,

DCBass

Some non-iSheep will also buy it to get features such as LTE. I don't need anybody, including you, to validate my purchase.

It was extremely disappointing. But why did ip4 users feel like they needed to upgrade after a year anyway???

Because they could.
Because they had enough disposable income.
Because they wanted (not needed) to.

Just because.

Get over worrying about what other people do and why they do it and start worrying about why you feel it's any of your business.

Get a life.

I agree with this article. It's an interesting read.

Well, we've all pretty much been living with the iPhone 5 for a month now, so that initial disgust with just a taller screen (for a lot of people) has turned into dull acceptance that it is, at least, going to be better than what we have now. It could have been a lot better, but it ain't too shabby. Just nothing 'revolutionary'.

One thing the iPhone 5 will settle on release is that Apple is not going to be making any wild changes to the iPhone or OS in the future. People can stop looking for the iPhone to fill some emotional void in their lives and just get it because it's a damn good phone.

Just because the iPhone 4S is selling well, doesn't mean the upgrade itself (from iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S) wasn't disappointing.

It was only disappointing because people bought into the whole teardrop iPhone 5 rumors, despite part leaks showing a 3GS-type upgrade.

I was all set to buy my iPhone 5 last year, when everyone expected the iPhone 5 to be released. But then Apple went and released a modest upgrade to the iPhone 4, and there seemed no reason to buy that when the iPhone 5 was about to come out.

Wow, what a stupid comment. For this reason alone I wish Apple had never started the whole "s" naming scheme. It just gave idiots like this ammunition for stupid and pointless articles. If the phone had been called the iPhone 5 or 6, half his article would be gone. For this reason I'll be glad to see the numbering dropped.

----------

Its not annoying, its very true. Droves and droves of people will line up to buy it because its an Apple product with very few changes and very non intuitive.

A) LTE is a major change
B) You don't know enough details to state there are very few changes
C) What made the iPhone so popular is that it is about the most intuitive piece off tech on the planet right now. Little children pick up their parents iPhones and iPads to play games on them. My friends little 18 month old baby is already using her iPad.

Sorry, but while I agree that "iSheep" as you so rudely put it exist, you need to improve your argument
