Same color or were you able to change colors? I am so unhappy with my black i5, I want to advance replace it with a white version instead, similar to how you showed above.

You can change colors they just have to put a hold on your card.

----------

I could almost let go the discoloration near the banding break, but near the headphone jack??! Yeah, speck of dust you trolls. Insane. Send it back and keep sending it back on their dime.

hELL ya bro send that **** back on till they get it right!!

Apple Store near me wouldn't let me exchange it. The Genius told me he hasn't seen a perfect black iPhone. He made a note on my file saying that if Apple announces anything regarding the scuffs/dents that I would be contacted.

Other than asking if I wanted a white one (he said those don't have any defects), he couldn't do anything at the moment.

Not very happy right now.

btw regarding the phones damaged in the box. Was anyone else surprised that the phone is only covered by a plastic sheet on the front and back, but nothing on the sides? (ie leaving the most fragile part - the chamfer - with no protection).

If I remember well for all other Apple aluminum products I have bought they also covered the sides with plastic (original iPhone, all iPads, MacBook Pro). I can't remember for sure about the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4...

Maybe a quick fix for them in the short term is just to protect them better in the box.

Argh ... that's ugly :-(

Any idea how you did it? Did the phone hit something?

the area near my sim is starting to flake white, this just happened today not out of box - I have not touched nor opened my slot...

They might be changing their policy due to the high demand for replacements, which is crap. Just return it for a refund and get a white phone. Although the aluminum is just as soft and will nick just as easily.

That's what she said.

Uh, look again. That's an obvious scratch -- the chamfer is broken and the result is aluminum shining through.

Did you read what I wrote? The damage near the jack is unacceptable.

No idea! Ive been super careful with it! Discovered it right after spending £30 on a Zagg protector! Gutted! Gonna take it into apple tomorrow see what they can do! I know its only tiny but when ive forked out £529 i want it to be perfect for at least a month, not 4 days!

I feel like apple is playing a joke on us all...I should have my replacement in a day or two, I looked up serial number and replacement is actually older than my messed up one out of the box....if I get one more dinged up 5 I'm just going to call it quits and get something else. Ive had iphone since 2007 but maybe time to move onto something else.

Recap of what happened to me:

- Got a iPhone in perfect condition but accidentally bumped it against my macbook pro and it got scuffed.

I went into the Apple store today and basically lied saying that my phone was damaged right from the start. I told him I got it release day and was too busy to pass by because of work.

He took my phone, examined it and went to the back. When he came back he basically told me that Apple has no expectation of all phones being perfect and they have cosmetic issues that are considered within tolerance.

All iPhone 5s may or may not have cosmetic issues. He apologized for the inconvenience and said he knew that Apple standards are high, so as a one time courtesy he would gladly process the exchange. He said, however, that he would only open one box and I'd have to choose between my current phone or the one he brings out (which he couldn't guarantee would be perfect). He wouldn't open a third.

I took that chance and behold the replacement phone was perfect.

Granted, since I damaged my phone myself, I didn't make a big deal of them only giving me one option. Had I been someone that had a scuffed phone from the start I would've been irked and asked for a manager.

Another thing is that he basically took out my Verizon SIM card and switched it over to my replacement phone, turned it on and it worked perfectly. I restored from iCloud in the store and left a happy camper.

Now I have to be careful and not bump my phone against my macbook again. :p

Some people here have some serious OCD. I mean yes, if there's a mark on a new phone exchange it. I did, one time. And the replacement they gave me in store was perfect. The guy even said that I shouldn't have a scratch on a new phone. But for those exchanging it 5 or 6 times that ridiculous. Obviously you'll never be satisfied. And for those saying they'll go to a Galaxy or another company. You really want to carry a plastic POS around compared to an iPhone? The only real issue I have with the i5 is Maps with iOS 6. I think in 2-3 years though it'll make Apple more powerful not having to depend on Google and everyone will look back on this and realize we had to go through it to get Apple to where it needs to be.

Unfortunately the most fragile part is also the most difficult to protect ... hopefully you can get an exchange.

But still this is worrying as they will not exchange forever, and if there is a dent after a week of careful use, other are likely to come. This is why I decided to get a refund for mine instead of a swap so that I can see people's feedback after a few weeks and decide. I really wanted one but now I am really not sure :-s

People should get a mint phone if new, I dont think people should settle for dings on a new unit, if we got open box I'd see your point but new should be new....dont you think?

Well they put me onto a senior advisor who asked for pictures and would get back to me. This is great, just spent a whole day trying to get my iPhone replaced with no result.

I hope they do the right thing and take care of you. I had a big wifi issue with my first IP5, took it back for a replacement and the new one has no issue at all. Apple definitely has Quality Control issues, but you can't beat the product. For those of you saying you are going to a Droid phone, go for it!

I think you are both right.

People should get a phone which corresponds to the standard the expect from Apple. If not they deserve an exchange.

But yes exchanging 6 times is just silly. Quite simply the standard these people expect is much higher that what Apple has decided to deliver, so they have a choice of:
- either take their money back if they know of a better option for them
- or if they don't know anything better, accept the phone as it is

The problem for Apple might be that this time the disconnect between what they delivered and what people expect might be greatest than in the past (certainly for me it is the case ... but instead of multiple exchanges I just got my money back and returned to my 4S which I think is better build, and will see how things go)

Do you have a photo of the scuff? Would be interesting to know what kind of damage such a seemingly minor accident can cause.
