how are you guys getting replacements over the phone? I have scuffs, but I also have a legitimate problem with my ringer. tech support tried walking me through things for the defective ringer/vibrate, but no luck. she said to go in the store and have a genius check it out or send it in for repairs (wtf). and another rep I talked to about the scuffs said to try the store. problem is, my store doesn't, and hasn't had any in stock. they have the white box replacements, but I don't want to have mismatched serial numbers on a phone 4 days old. I feel like I'm getting a runaround from Apple.

Do you have a photo of the scuff? Would be interesting to know what kind of damage such a seemingly minor accident can cause.
The scuff was more or less the size of the headphone jack on the bottom. Really minor scuff -- but generally it was longer than the ones posted in this thread.

*shakes head*
I wouldn't normally return/exchange something if I caused the damage. But it was such a minor bump that I couldn't even believe that it got scuff because of it.

Plus I was still within my 14 days so I could've exchanged it for whatever reason. :p

I feel like apple is playing a joke on us all...I should have my replacement in a day or two, I looked up serial number and replacement is actually older than my messed up one out of the box....if I get one more dinged up 5 I'm just going to call it quits and get something else. Ive had iphone since 2007 but maybe time to move onto something else.

Just got my replacement...faster than I thought and guess what....it also has nicks. Not as bad as original one but the replacement has them on the front, where my original one had on the back...this thing is going back for refund. I wont be trying again to get a replacement...unless they gave me a white one. I dont like white phones but at least the dings would not show as much on a white one...maybe in a few months they will work these issues out.

:(

*and also has the discoloration...I think they all do to some degree.

Mine was scuffed on band, as well as along the silver border on the back, quite badly really. (White, 64gb)

Only, unlike some of the 2 year olds in this thread, I realise it is simply a mobile phone and not any bodily appendage. Further more, it WILL get scuffed over time.

Honest, I can see both points...some folks accept little imperfection on their divides...others like me just want a 'new' unit, something that does not look used. But to each his own. If you can live with it then thats great.

flawless out of the box.

I was worried because the plastic protector had a bump on the screen and two bumps on the back.

you know, the kind of bumps you get when you put a screen protector on over a piece of dust.

No worries. Black/16/ATT ordered from Apple.com on launch day at 0730PDT.

Although, my eyes aren't as good as some of the people in this thread, so I might not actually be able to find the defects they are finding.

My replacement unit is mint. And all hardware seems to be functioning properly.

I had a sticker on the box that said inspected by Applecare, so maybe they are checking units before sending them?

Thanks Apple!

Flawless out of the box here!

I do however expect it to get scratches over time, same as with my iPhone 4 and 4s both. I bought AppleCare + tho so if they ever get crazy bad ill pony up the $50 bucks and exchange it hassle free. Super happy with my purchase :)

my replacement had that same sticker and I still got visible damage out of the box....either I'm being a baby and nitpicking too much or I just have bad luck this time around with iPhones.

I just went to the apple store and got my iPhone 5 replaced cause of the scuffs

This is what I got

It's flawless no defects at all

Question for those who received phones that they consider flawless. Obviously, they don't have the chips or dings or dents that have been reported and shown in photos.

Are they also free of the discolorations (for lack of a better word) on either side of the antenna band spacers (shown in photo below).

Thanks!

Ok. Thanks. Wasn't sure whether people were strictly talking about the nicks and dings or what. So this would be included as "scuffs", then.

Mine seems free of any of the places where the finish is nicked down to the bare aluminum, but all four spacers have some degree of what is visible in the photo.

Yeah the apple rep told me that they don't replace the iPhone if its a physical damage but this time it's an exception because a lot of people came in for this matter.

Which production week do you have ?

I have 36 now which is suppose to be a damaged iPhone but its flawless

Btw the iPhone's that they give me..are they new or refurbished? ..

Week 35 factory C3
Flawless out of the box and not a mark since I've started using it. I do take care of my iPhone though.

Yes but would they exchange for the near-spacer discoloration?

I have pretty much resigned myself that they wouldn't. It's nothing compared to what some others have shared. Without the flash from the camera or a bright flashlight, it would probably be difficult to even get someone to see it.

I have a tendency to drop phones, though, so I'll have mine in a case all the time. I haven't even powered it up or anything and have kept it in the box since delivery waiting on the case to arrive. In a couple years when I upgrade, I will probably just pass it on to a family member so resale value isn't realy a problem. So, all things considered, it's not a huge issue for me.

Am extremely OCD about these things, though, so knowing it's there bothers me.

Don't know, but would assume the replacement is new rather than refurb.

I gotta laugh. Half a million people view this thread and Tim Kook says that this kind of damage out of the box is normal.

Yeah the rep wasn't clear he said its a refurb but everything is new and tested

Anyways it's way better my old Iphone 5

No scuffs no camera rattle :)

I think it was Phil Schiller (unless Cook has made a statement now, too).

And if it was the exchange with Schiller, technically, the person who emailed him was pretty vague. They didn't specify whether the damage was fresh from the box or after they dropped it on pavement.

If it is a refurb, it can't really be used. Nobody would have had a chance to use it, yet. :)

There is no such "damaged iPhone week" - there have been reported damaged iPhones from all different production weeks and factories.
