Sharpie.. looks like you used a sharpie.

AKA it looks like ass.

Best bet is to get it replaced.

It does if you just tap the spot with the sharpie. That's why you have to clean the spot right after so the only part that gets stained is the knick or ding.

Received my 64GB black today, scratched out of the box. Bottom bezel has one small scuff but the side has some noticeable scuffs.

Apple customer service sucks a$$ is all I am going to say. They told me to send my phone back so I can get a replacement white one after 12 phone calls, 2 visits to the apple store. And NOW they call me today and said they are sending me a black one. I said that was not PART of our AGREEMENT. I am exchanging this for a white one. They said sorry we don't do exchanges. I flat out blew my top. Tired of wasting my time with them now. I told them thats it, its a return and I don't want their crappy phone anymore. So they changed it to a full refund and told me when it;s back I need to call AT&T to get my line adjusted so it will allow upgrades again (ATT told me they need to do it), so no idea who I need to talk too. But either way I am glad I am done with them.

I may still go locally when they eventually have them in stock and get one, but for now my 4S will do it's job.

Went into the Apple store to exchange my phone today for an undamaged replacement. The first guy I spoke with said they had sold a lot of iPhone 5's and he hadn't heard of anyone having any scratches or anything.

He brought out a phone in a white box and I immediately noticed a decent sized nick on the side, there was also a lot of glue that had come out of the antenna strips at the top of both sides. When he came back with the second phone he told me he wouldn't be able to open anymore phones after that one. This phone looked great at first but sure enough there was good sized gouge on one of the bottom corners.

Since this guy had to leave, and he had already shown me 2 phones, he sent a woman over to help me out. She immediately told me that these little nicks and scratches on the phones were within Apple's manufacturing tolerances and that it was very possible that they wouldn't have a phone in their entire stock that did not have a nick or scratch on it. After this she came back with a phone that was the worst of all 3 I looked at. It had nicks, scuffs and scratches on it. I showed her the scratches and she gave me the same line about manufacturing tolerances and she couldn't keep opening all of the boxes.

At this point I had been there for over an hour so I decided to wait for new stock before trying again. The only good thing about the experience was that my phone looked better than the 3 phones they showed me even though mine has a scuff and little nicks.

Needless to say...very disappointing

PS: the display phones all looked terrible.

Hey man, not to sound like a creep or anything but I live in SA also, which store did you go to? I have a nick on my iP5 near the sleep button... The guys at La Cantera were kind of douches when I called them, but North Star was more helpful. I have yet to exchange my phone (9/21 delivery), I don't know if all this hassle is worth it.

So that's why Apple won't or didn't anodize macs or iPads.

Except for the fact that they do anodize iMacs, iPads, and MacBook Pros -- the silver finish on those devices is a bead-blasted, anodized finish. There are so many links confirming this that you should just Google it.

I really wanted this phone especially in black ;/ I might just wait or get a galaxy s3
(I have a iphone 4s/white)

Blemish right out of box

Crazy how much of this is going on. Got my iPhone 5 today and it has blemishes straight out of the box.

It's really sad hearing all these horror stories.

It's sadder that after all of the time, aggravation, and brain damage that people are so weak willed they have to keep running back for more punishment rather than just returning the phone.

If you don't want a scratch on your black iPhone 5, don't buy one. Even the "flawless" phones have minuscule defects. It's not a big deal. And if it was, people would be able to control themselves enough to return it and either wait or move on.

But they can't. Apple knows this. That's why it's getting worse. They know you'll just keep coming back no matter how bad they treat you. They'll never lose your money, and they'll give you as many damaged refurbs and "white boxes" as you can swallow if you kick, scream, and complain for hours each time you want one.

They're just churning the returns.

Sad. Amusing, but sad.

I went to northstar. Useless and no help.

call one last time to customer service, kill them with kindness - ask right away to speak with a manager - try chit chatting with them - oh you guys must be so busy, blah, blah. blah......they can do it with manager approval - tell them you have called countless times and you want it sorted now sweet but stern.....good luck

Not true. Anybody who's been around here for some time (and knows me) knows that I'm extremely picky about my devices. I've owned all versions other than the 4S and this is the first one that I haven't had to take in for an exchange.

Upsetting that Apple publicly apologized for the crappy map app, but doesn't address this issue....I honestly believe at this point they will not admit to any wrong doing or poor manufacturing techniques, they will however fix the issue without addressing the public(current iPhone 5 owners) New orders will be filled using phones that have stricter quality control/better anodizing...Puts the early adopters out of luck.

Should I Exchange?

Do you guys think I should ask for an exchange? I just picked it up today and found a nick on the bottom right frame after inspecting it closely!

don't bother, mine was flawless out of the box
after hearing these stories, i treat it with extra care (my iPhone 4 had minimal scratches after 2 years)
but in less than 24 hours there are already some tiny scuffs at the bezels
either made peace with it, or just use a touch up pen to hide the silver part

I rather keep my brand new phone rather than getting a refurbished one which will inevitably get damaged in the future.

after all its just a phone

Wow I don't know what some of you are doing with your phones (excluding already damaged ones). Here's mine (naked since launch):

hi. just one question. i was wondering how long does it take to produce and get one iphone? i explain... if i order one today with a 3/4 weeks delivery, the phone i would get has to be produced yet or not?
because if it has to be produced, i suppose they must have solved the dent/scuff problem by now, right?
what do you think?
