This is disappointing. If it does indeed scratch there is also no easy swap in removing the back and replacing it with a new fresh unscathed back.

Will have to find an excuse to get it replaced at the Apple store free of charge ;)
Well when i got my iPhone 5 my iPhone was flawless. I later got 2 dents from the terrible case i had. I recommend not getting a case and just being careful. ;)

Where did you get a protector for the back?

Just a word of advice.....
Choose a case wisely. Some of these cases are so hard and unfinished on the inside that your iphone will see more scuffs and marks than if you didnt put one on.

its a screen protector for the back, not a case.

The second replacement is better than previous two I got. But still find some issues. Not worth for another exchange. Save my time and Apple's money:eek:

I find it odd that you'd want to save Apple's money. Apart from the fact that they have $100bn of cash in the bank (which they're clearly choosing to not spend on R&D or quality control), you are a customer paying a hefty premium for their product.

I have decided to just keep my damaged iPhone 5, because after going through 4 other damaged ones in the Apple Store in Charlotte NC, a two hour drive from my house, I was told Apple would send me a replacement.

The replacement was shipped to the Apple Store, however, and with no guarantee it would be flawless out of the box. I can't take time off work to go chasing undamaged iPhones around.

When I called Apple Care, they said the only other option was to ship one to my house but put a hold on my card for the entire cost of the iPhone 5 until they received my damaged one or the one they sent me. Frankly, after spending on this iPhone, I just don't have that much money sitting around in my account to be "held."

Apple really dropped the ball here. I'm temped to return it to Best Buy and hold out for the Galaxy Note 2 in October.

I know this is probably obvious to most of you guys but never, ever, buy your iPhone from AT&T. I only did so because I was making changes to my plan and thought it made sense to order the phones at the same time.
Anyway, my black iPhone 5 arrived scuffed out of the box. Apple customer support told me to call AT&T since I bought it from them and now I have AT&T on the phone saying since the box wasn't damaged then I need to call Apple because it's a "manufacturer's defect".
So I just talked to the Apple rep and they won't waive a "return fee" by mail or whatever so they're advising me to go into an Apple Store which I'll do later today. I just don't want the Apple Store to tell me it's an AT&T issue.
The Apple supervisor on the phone said returns are really supposed to be handled by AT&T and that Apple is going above and beyond to help me. I told him that I'm caught in the middle and AT&T isn't budging so I just hope Apple can help me directly. I'll see what happens.

When is Apple going to issue a recall on these defective black anodized cases??

Those engineers should have stayed with the flawless tried and tested Stainless Steel design, would have saved a lot of grief and their customers would have been proud

Never. This problem reminds me of the "wobbly button" thing with the iPhone 4, a lot of users were complaining here and on the Apple forums, they never changed the process and most iPhone 4S' home buttons were wobbly as well. As long as the media don't talk about it, there's no chance Apple will change it. And let's be honest, none of the photos posted here are really spectacular, the medias won't post news about the "scuffgate".

I have 3 very tiny white points above the antenna of my black iPhone 5, I thought of an exchange, then I remembered the 4 exchanges I had for my iPhone 4 and I decided I wouldn't give a F this time. It's fully working, it's hot looking, I keep it.

Also, sorry for my english.

This is what my wife is doing.

Been using iPhone since the first one but considering this as well. I like the Note but prefer Jelly Bean on Android device so Note 2 could rock. I'm still using a 4 as I skipped 4S waiting for 5. Not impressed with iOS 6 or 5 really & I'm NOT playing the exchange game where I have to feel guilty for a new product shipping "new" with nicks/scratches/etc. Right now polycarbonate > iOS 6 IMO.

I'm not sure that's the issue. Look at the photos in this thread. The issue is the chamfered edge and where the side band meets the chamfered edge. The anodized flat back portion (where the apple logo is) is fine it seems.

I got my iPhone 5 today through the reservation system and checked it out at the store. Now at home I noticed an almost invisible scuff barely visible to the eye unless I look for it, otherwise it's flawless. I'm really neat about my stuff, specially about my gadgets and car but my phone is the thing I use most and it's bound to get a small scratch a month or two from today.

This is my first iPhone after the 3GS which I used till today, I skipped the 4 and 4S. The 3GS came with small bites in one section of the silver bracket where it meets the screen rubber, barely visible as well and I lived with it. The first and really only scratch came after a month of use, it a small black dot right on the center of the silver Apple and it really hurt for a day, I used no case and will not use a case with the iPhone 5.

I keep my screen protectors on for 3-6 months (sometimes longer) and am thinking about adding this to my maintenance routine.

If I were to use this I would take every precaution to ensure it didn't touch anything that it didn't need to by carefully taping off the areas. The more time you put into it the better it will turn out.

It's black anodized black metal. It's gonna scuff. A little DIY never hurt anyone.

Yup I would definitely tape off all areas that didn't need touch up. I am thinking about buying a replacement back once prices drop to experiment on what touch ups work the best.

I always run my phones naked so I know it is an eventuality that it will get nicked or scratched. I am just looking for solutions to help make the phone look "new" again after this happens.

Although appealing, I still wouldn't go with the Note 2.

I found the S3 unbearable due to the horrible battery drain while not in use. It goes down 10% every 2-3 hours in standby, and thats with every sync option turned off and every other setting crippled. My iPhone 5 on the other hand went through 5% in 12 hours of standby (I overslept ).

I could have got 2-3 days out of it with light use, but that would involve using power save mode, which destroys the performance on the device and makes it a truly horrible experience.

Just went to the grand central store to swap out my black 16gb with some missing paint and was turned away saying apple has stopped exchanging phones with physical blemishes...genius BS? If so, gonna get an appointment for 5th ave tomorrow

Also, she said that apple was coming out with a bumper or case so I can wait for that and hide the blemishes...

If you aren't BS'ing us, then I image there'll be a fair few angry people knocking on Apple's doors very soon.

Nope, no bs... Got another appointment with the soho apple store tomorrow afternoon, if I get the same answer, not looking good.

Same here. A free case or bumper is like a slap in the face. It would be like Apple saying we know we sold you a damaged phone but here is a bumper that cost us 10 cents to make so you can hide the scratches. Wouldn't be surprised if it happens though.

I actually got a call today from the Senior Advisor I've been speaking with to see how my visit to the Apple store went. When I told her I went in and the phones they showed me were worse than mine she said she's heard the same thing from two other people and told me I could definitely wait for a few weeks and then try again.

apple is beyond stupid if they stopped exchanging them.. we are all still within our 30 days....

Unfortunately its 30 days to return them, not to exchange. Although you should still get 1 exchange by default before they start asking for proof of the issue etc.

Had the thing for a week. It's been covered with Ghost Armor and I have literally treated it like my baby and it has not touched anything but my hands, lap, pocket and a soft clean cloth on my desk and yet some of the sides are already rubbing off? WHAT THE.

Considering that mine still is in perfect condition after regular use since I got it last Friday morning I fear for your (current or future) baby.
