Anyone have photos of their phone after they used a sharpie to touch up small nicks

Had a flawless day 1 iPhone 5 (32GB) in Black. Sadly, the camera was faulty. Got a replacement (out a brown box). Came with a chip... tried to live with it but it bothered me too much. Went back to Apple Retail today who opened up two brand new boxes (actual retail boxes) - both with cosmetic damage. The genius was in entire agreement that this wasn't good enough and basically noted my case to say at any point during warranty I was to be given a new phone at my request. Here's hoping in a few months they pull their fingers out and sell phones that aren't damaged.

I've tried it. It looks bad as the sharpie is a different kind of black than the chamfered edge. I tried to touch it up but ended up taking the sharpie off because it looked just as bad with the sharpie .

Today I happened to be near an Apple Store and decided to see how the display units were holding up. Is this the vintage/worn look people were looking forward to or does this just look like a cheap product?

Holy quadpost batman!

I think black iPhones looks great new and will look cool after a couple years, but those couple years of inbetween period will just make it look crappy. I'm going to replace mine in a couple months for a touchscreen with dead spots on the edges.

I'm going to replace mine in a couple months for a touchscreen with dead spots on the edges in hope that the anodizing holds up as well as iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and the first gen iPhone.

Ive been in to the local Apple store to do the same thing and every single black iP5 on display looked like that picture, every one. The white ones dont look anywhere near as bad because the cheap material is the same colour as the scratches, but you can still see them.

i have a black one and after seeing this pic, i think white would be better decision

just wondering, these scuffs are known with the black model right? any news on em happening on the white?

You first have to understand how Apple makes the aluminum unibody housing black. It's a process known as anodizing which through electricity adds an oxide layer to the surface of the aluminum giving it it's color. Anodizing is known to have trouble with bonding to sharp edges like on the polished chamfered edge on the perimeter of the iPhone 5. That combined with what appears to be a rather low grade aluminum Apple is using on the iPhone 5 results in the anodizing and or the aluminum itself chipping off the housing.

The white iPhone doesn't appear to be anodized, but it fact it is just like almost every other Apple product. It's anodized silver to give a consistent finish and to protect the finish from oxidizing. However, the polished chamfered edge on the white iPhone 5 is not anodized unlike the black iPhone where it is since it needs to be black. Overal the textured portions of the white iPhone 5 will not show much wear just like how the iPad and MacBook Pros/Airs hold up rather well. The problem with the white iPhone is the polished raw aluminum chamfered edge. You don't get chipping like on the black iPhone, but instead you can easily see scuffs and scratches since it has a mirror finish. IMO, the biggest design flaw with the iPhone 5 is the chamfered edge. For one it doesn't feel good in my hand on the iPhone 5 or the new iPod touch. I would rather see a rounded edge which is more comfortable in hand and less susceptible to showing nicks and scuffs.

Not gonna lie, that actually looks pretty cool (not good for resale value though)

Um, maybe if it was several months or a year in use. But that looks terrible for a 3 week old phone (assuming they haven't changed out the display phones, in which case this phone might be even newer than that). It looks 20x more worn out than my 2 year old iPhone 4.

Refunded by you or the store? I used to be like this with my DVD's, I remember I opened 4 copies and Future Shop had enough and refunded my money.
