I have got my black iPhone 5 for 2 weeks now and it was flawless out of the box. I have been very careful with it, keep it in a Sena leather case and its only naked when its in my hand.....

Yet somehow it has got a blemish on the chamfered rim. No idea how it happened but it was just there all of a sudden. It's really annoying as it reflects the light, making it very noticeable.

I am concerned about how it will look near the end of my 24 month contract. To me this is a massive design flaw and they need to rethink this for the next version

I hear ya. I kept my phone in the box unused until I got a case and there they are . . . three areas where the black is off the chamfer. I wouldn't mind so much if I did something to make it happen. The way I feel now is that at any moment this stuff can flake off. That will piss me off when I am ready to sell next year.

By the way I found that a permanent marker will cover up the small chips and not even be noticeable. That is for the chamfer only.

I'm thinking about returning my 64GB Black for a white one if Verizon ever gets any in.

I have one tiny spot where silver is showing through the black and some small damage where the glass meets the metal on the back.

Is the White version less prone to the scuffs, scratches and damage then the black model?

Just got my 3rd replacement and its flawless, but the power/sleep button is sunken in. When I put any of my cases on, you have to mash down pretty hard before the case can contact the button and press down.

Calling Applecare to have it replaced again.

I can't believe that you pay top dollar for an Apple product and have to live with damaged goods.

It's just not right.

Steve Jobs Dead = Apple pushing substandard products.

Black 5 at ATT store in South CA. Multiple small nicks and missing anodizing but hey, it's not bent.

snagged another black 16 today. phone seems to be fine except the top right corner bezel seems to have a small gap and there is a tiny tiny shiny object showing, i think its part of the internals of the phone so idk what to do.

I'm assuming that is the cause but kind of ridiculous in my mind. I have several more now. So what have we learned class? Put your phone in a case and please by no means take it out until the day you are ready to sell it.

Or don't use hardshell snap cases. Instead use a case with a silicon band.

I hear the iPhone 4s is less prone to the scuffs, scratches and damage than the iPhone 5. :D

Yea, Steve Jobs would have never shipped an Apple product which scratched easily...

You're ridiculous. Why did you get 3 replacements in the first place?

Just found my first ding. Two actually. Very small but phone has been babied and in case since I got it. And they weren't there a couple days ago. Nice.

And BTW, I use the Spigen case pictured above but in black.

Got my replacement yesterday. Week 39. Has a tiny scuff near headphone jack. Everything else is ok.

Will see in next few days if I want to keep it or swap it out again.

It's not like the case I am using has diamonds encrusted on the edge. I still think that it shouldn't scratch so easily.

Getting my white ip5 to replace my black tomorrow.

Note: Senior advisors or whatever they are called, can do absolutely nothing to help you. I went around in circles for 2 hours with one of these reps and they continually told me it was impossible to swap a black for white. The next day, a "Corporate Customer Care Admin" called me to follow-up and I explained my issue. Her first response was, "we can swap a black for white no problem let me get that done for you".

So, all in all they made me happy as they always do but it took a lot of posturing to get to this point.

Im sorry but people who are replacing iphone after iphone becuase they are looking for problems have some serious issues. The power button rattles? are you kidding me?

Do us all a favor and let other people buy a phone. Im surprised apple is even letting people open up to 5 or 6 phones.

I'm thinking about swapping my black 64GB for a white 64GB myself.
Just worried that the new one could be worst then the one I have now.

I never managed to find a flawless replacement for my scuffed black and slate 16, but on my most recent call to the Apple store in Durham, NC, the manager explained that they are no longer replacing iPhones with "cosmetic issues." (Of course, I had a case number dating back to the 21st, and when I told him that, he said "Oh, in that case then we can help you.") Only he couldn't guarantee me that my 2 hour drive to the store would yield an unblemished product. I decided not to go.

While I agree that some issues are not issues at all but nitpicking, there are real problems out there and I see no problem with Apple letting someone open up more than one box. It's not like they are giving them away out of the goodness of their hearts.

Took me at least 20 calls to apple to not swap but return and get white because everyone including executive admin wouldn't exchange for a white. Lol. After my report to bbb they finally got me one overnighted to a store which I pick up tonight.

Very odd that both of us had to go to these lengths to make what should be a simple swap. This is the first time in my 10 years of buying Apple products that I have had this much of a struggle to get my problem resolved.

that is crazy! i called on sept 22 and they switched it to white for me - the only problem was when it arrived, it was damaged and the battery is a complete lemon - so now i am waiting for new white one..

good luck on getting a perfect white!

there is just no question that apple is clearly having massive issues - i just wonder now what will happen with ipad mini as it has been reported as being produced with same materials......

apple stock went down because of this and lower than expected shipments, stock got a bounce yesterday with apple media announcement + an upgrade from one analyst but it will not stay level if they do not pull through on the new iPad.....in addition, they make much less profit on iPads than iPhones.....
