I have an anodized miniature carabiner on my keychain that rubs against my keys day in and day out. There is not a single scratch on it. It costed about a dollar.

In Apple store yesterday. Noted that black new iPod Touch and Nano have same finish as iPhone 5: polished bevel in black and back in black.

From apple specs,

Touch is black Stainless Steel!
Nano is black Aluminum!

Both come in rainbow of colors. All are anodized. Found that SS can be anodized on the web!

Both showed edge wear a bit, like iPhone. Really didn't look bad. Seemed what to expect with usage.

Thinking that except for out-of-the-box problems, we are too OCD on this issue.

2000 users out of millions of Iphones that have been released? Its like .02 percent or so. That is MINISCULE compared to ammount released.
Personally, I got five iPhone 5. All four black ones have scratches out of brand new retail package. One white has a dent on the bottom. For me, it is horrible. I returned them.

That's nice. Now go read up on how professional statisticians conduct studies.

Also, please check your math.

Saki is Japanese. iPhones are made in China!

And? They don't drink the wonderful elixir in other countries? China has many Saki breweries.

As it should be durable. I would bet it was made out of tempered aluminum and anodized correctly. Apple used non-tempered aluminum and a rushed, low cost, low quality anodizing process.

I took my flawless iPhone 5 out of its case to apply a screen protector last night, and I accidentally bumped my phone into a lamp (very lightly, more like grazed). Now I have 2 chips in the black near the camera. UGH

I just think there is something wrong with the anodisation proces, but also with the aluminium.

I got a anodised aluminium keychain and after 2 years it is still perfect.
Maybe the aluminium from the iphone 5 is to soft.

I see most people i the pool have their iphone flawless even after use.

Mine got a scuff on the edge of the chamfer after just a very short time. It did knock against a coin in my pocket but only very briefly and not hard.

Does this mean that my iphone had defective anodizing? Should I get it changed?

I also think the call quality is not great. I might try and get the phone replaced by Apple in a couple or months or so, when all the issues have been ironed out. I'm not too fussed if it's a refurb, as long as its in fine shape. What is the best way to get it replaced? Will they replace for scuffs that far down the line?

Also the phone rattles when I tap it.I understand this is the camera lens. However, I read that you test this by turning the camera app on and tapping it then, and the rattle should stop. With my phone, the rattle is much worse when camera app is open.

So does this mean that mine is defective if it has scuffed so easily?

Also the sim card tray is very slightly recessed, and not flush with the side. It means that a bit of debris builds up there and I guess it will slowly get pushed into the phone. Should I get the phone exchanged.

Also I think I got a very little bit of sweat on the SIM card when I put it in last. Will this have ruined my phone?

Are you serious? Stop looking for a problem, and start enjoying your phone. If you think the rattle is to much, have a genius look at it. Worrying about one drip of sweat will ruin your phone is not going to make yout life any happier sir!

I guess you're right. I'm not sure if I am over worrying here.

I'm so worried though because I pressed the power button with my finger nail instead of my finger, and it was on the edge of the button not the middle. The button made an unusual sound, not the normal click. I really worry I might have caused some damage. I did this twice too :-/

You know what, sites like these cause people to over worry. Only negative comments here, which is logical because people without problems will not come here and tell that their phone is great. Everybody gets paranoid by reading these stories and start looking for problems, but we all forget that most people are really enjoying their phones!

If I was you, just go the an Apple store and let them look at it, and after that start enjoying your great phone :) I'm getting mine tommorow (c3, week 41, black)

(alltough I'd say your not going to damage a button that fast with just your nail :) )

The difference is probably that each factory is dedicated to manufacturing specific iPhone models e.g. GSM Unlocked, GSM AT&T, CDMA Verizon, CDMA Sprint etc

Has anyone else experienced this awful problem of the SIM card tray being far too recessed?

Mine sits at least a few microns too deep to be flush with the rest of the side. It is truly awful because it means that some dust particles accumulate there.

I'm starting to lose a lot of sleep over all these issues now, and in fact can't concentrate at work. Apple need to sort all these problems out before they go under.

While I'm usually open to what people want to think and feel, I don't understand how this could possibly cause someone to lose sleep and concentration while at work... It's just a phone. If it's that big of an issue, stick with it for a few more weeks and request a replacement.
