I have a week 37 with a tiny spot of silver showing through and some damage where the glass meets the metal on the back.

This is the 3rd phone and I don't think people should have to live with an expensive phone that is damaged right out of the box.

How do you tell the week from the serial number besides the chipmunk site.

My first few letters are: C39JDL

Just noticed my week old replacement* phone's camera lens has what I assume is either dust or possibly a tiny scratch underneath it. (There are also some tiny nicks on the edge of the phone). It doesn't seem to affect photos, but a friend of mine said it could get worse in the future? I don't really know but he seemed pretty confident. I don't know if that's worth going to Apple for; would they even replace the phone?

I'm pretty pleased with the phone otherwise. Then again, I did spend over £500 on the phone and it is flawed. Would waiting a few weeks for Apple to sort out the quality control be worth it or should I just go in now and hope for the best? :\

*while my original phone was scuffed out of the box, it was replaced because of a speaker issue.

My iPhone 5 came flawless, but then I put it in a pocket with some coins for literally 2 seconds. Now it has chips on the top left corner, with the silver showing through.

Should I seek a replacement, or is this normal?

Thought i had finally gotten a near perfect one. On my fifth iphone. Upon closer inspection, home button is ragged like it has little chunks taken out of the edges all around. Lame. I give up.

iPhone 5 Scuff Question

I am planning on picking up a black one at best buy, for the people that got their iphones recently is it still scuffs out of the box? thanks

Just go to the store and find out. Just because others have been scratched recently, doesn't mean yours is going to be. Stop with the pre-emptive worrying.

Black scuffs/dings

New to the forums so I apologize if this is redundant. I've enjoyed my iPhones, iPads and iMac over the years due to design, quality, and how easy Apple products are to use. I picked up a black iPhone 5 64gb and found several scuffs. Returned it for another and then had call quality issues after three days. Went back to the Apple store again and went thru 5 replacements (white box) and all had prevalent dings or scratches. Hoping a white Verizon would come in, I kept the bad unit until my 14th day. I will say I wouldn't get a black one again for this generation. I bumped, not hard at all, the one I had against the smart cover of my iPad and literally dinged the edge creating a prevalent silver mark. I'm very shocked at the quality of the materials used and the fact I was 0-5 on replacement units. The genius agreed and even stated they've had a lot of issues with black. Now back using my old 4 until inventory improves. Clearly something is not right as I don't remember inventory on a new release this sparse in recent years. Finding a Verizon 5 is like finding a needle in a haystack. According to store rep, plenty of Sprint available and AT&T is seeing some improvements, but no Verizon.

You don't see a problem when people are allowed to open up 5-10 phones? People have been waiting weeks on end to get their iPhone. When a customer opens up 10 phones, those 10 phones are now unable to be sold. Now the people who were waiting have to wait that much longer until Apple sends 10 phones to replace the opened up 10 phones. People are having to go without because others are selfish and have entitlement issues.

And you don't see a problem?

If the phone is defective when I open it the problem is not with me but with the company making the phone. It's not an entitlement issue if the person is paying for a new phone. Feel free to accept whatever piece of crap a company is willing to sell to you. . . I mean so you don't come off as selfish.

Oh yeah I see a problem. Defective iPhones being sold as new.

The week doesn't matter. It's a crap shoot period. If the worker had too much saki then your done for.

So mine arrived on launch day with some nicks in the back cover and one bezel nick, but I lived with it.

I thought the phone was holding up nicely.

However, today I noticed that I have wear on the back aluminum slate.

I keep it in an iPod sock and the ribs of the sock, have created lines in the back cover, if you hold it in the right angle. Not scratches, just a different coloring. It actually looks like a pattern in the aluminum now. ha-ha.

Has anyone else seen wear like this? I wonder if it is just some kind of reaction or if it will wear through someday?

Otherwise it holds up great!

Got a Week 41 replacement today and it seems to be flawless. Defintiely the best unit i've received thus far. Can't say i've noticed anything troubling.

Finally, i can move with my life...until i have to do it all again when the 5S comes out.

I believe that any case that touches the back of the black iPhone 5 is going to cause it damage or problems.

I saw a thread where the Otterbox Defender left permanent outlines of the cutouts for the Apple logo and square box thingy where the soft rubber touches the back of the iPhone.

I'm waiting for the Lifeproof case for mine but am worried that the back with all those little bumps will etch right into the back of the black phone.

Hopefully Lifeproof with change this pattern when they get the 5 case out.

Iphone 3rd replacement

Hey guys, got my third iphone replacement today( hour ago) and its week 38
( September ) 1,000% flawless .....BUT!!!!! The power button on top was almost flush with iphone making it really hard to turn it off ,,, Kill me please!! Calling apple for another replacement :(

Here is my week 41 Black 64GB AT&T iPhone 5, comes from the factory DN. I am unhappy with this, although this one is better then my old one, it is still scratched. It also has some sort of dried on blueish stuff on one of the antenna breaks.

The birchwood pen IME rubbed off the phone within 24 hour of light, caseless use, after drying overnight. Not worth it.

Thanks for this information.

Any idea what is actually going on in this process? It doesn't look "damaged," if you know what I mean. It's just the outline of the sock's ribs like you suggest, it sounds similar to seeing an outline on a Defender (I'm imagining that would look similar).

So what actually is going on? Is it some kind of reaction, or is it actually removing some of the finish? Any idea?

It doesn't look THAT bad, but it is disappointing that a soft little sock would have caused these lines, looks a bit line a pinstripe suite.

Thanks so much!

Look in this thread for some ideas:

Right. Because in the grand scheme of things they HAVEN'T heard a lot about scuffgate. Believe it or not, even 1000 users on MR is not a large sample size.

1000 is not a large sample size? Statisticians would disagree.
