The iPhone Lottery is a fool's game - and one I've played. Even if you manage to get a pristine phone out of the box, you'll eventually get a ding, scuff, or scratch on it eventually, and at that point, you'll feel even more foolish. Take it from me...

This is so true.

I went through 3 white iPhones over the past month in the search for a scratch free phone. I decided as my final attempt before giving up to try a black iPhone and it actually turned out to be perfect, until it got a ding on the chamfered edge 2 days later when it tapped ever so lightly on my belt buckle.

I guess this is what they call Karma for being so OCD...

...its not the end of the world...

I have had the black iphone 5 for a month now and although i have a case on it, it doesn't cover the whole phone, as a result silver nicks are showing on the exposed areas. to be honest, it doesnt take away the pleasure of having a phone, and to be frank, if you are on this webpage, on this forum, we all know you will end up getting the next iphone in 11 months. I know i will.:apple:

EDIT: I forgot to add: Everyone goes on about how amazingly thin it is, then you slap some thick case on it! just enjoy the phone, once its got one scratch on it, you can stop being so anal and paranoid and just enjoy the phone, for 11 months haha

Picked up my IP from the Apple Store today and I am now a victim of "scuffgate"....2 of them. I don't think Ill be making a return or exchange though. It's going into a case anyways.

A part of me thinks apple did this purposely. I think this will greatly decrease resell value. Therefor people will just buy a new iphone that is scuff free.

I'm a bit gutted about this whole thing. I've read the posts on this thread back when didn't even have intentions of buying one, and thought it can't be that bad. I've since bought a black one and after one day I have silver showing in two places on the band.

I've read posts saying people are being over the top, but this is just stupid. Apple have messed up and should admit it.

I'm not bothered enough to change the phone because it will happen again and It won't bother me too much anyway. But it's still not what you would expect from Apple. If I don't buy a case now it will look a mess in two months. How can that be right for something worth over 500 quid?

"It's not right" "It's unnacceptable" "Apple should take responsibility" "I spent my hard earned money so it'd better be flawless" "this is just stupid" "I am on my sixth phone"...

I could go on.

They sell out every phone they make. EVERY ONE. There is such a rush when they make a few available at 10PM online that they often sell out in SECONDS...

People who agonize over the "scuffs" still can't control themselves enough to NOT BUY ONE.

Yup. Real big "gate" for Apple to deal with...

This thread and the "issues" within it isn't hurting them one bit. There IS no "problem" in their eyes when people are literally falling over themselves to line up and BUY the product (even the people so horrified with the "scuffs"!)

I didn't say anything about it harming their sales. I said they've messed up, meaning in production, which is strange for such a big release.

I've never had an Apple product that shows marks after a day. My post was just basic observations after getting the phone.

Black iPhone 5 since launch. No case, no protection, nothing. Goes in my pocket (pants/shirt), on my desk, table - everywhere. Not a scratch.

Not sure what you all are doing to scuff the **** out of yours. Either way, if you want a perfect phone, leave it in the box or take better care of it?

Might want to go get an adroid phone instead. Most all are plastic. Might be better suited to your daily use/habits/life.

Right. And my point is, if they "messed up" it would be impacting sales. It's not. Not even a tiny bit, as people who complain about the "scuffs" STILL can't stop BUYING them.

They didn't mess up. They made the phone out of a durable material that doesn't hold up well to "scuffs". The alternatives were either too expensive or not what they wanted to do. I'm sure (even based on Schiller's response) that they knew all along that the phone would show wear (even after 2 days of use *gasp*).

It's not a big deal. If it was, get a grip and don't buy it.

But it's not, so you will. That's ok though.

The iPhone 5 is the best phone ever. No worries.:D

All are fine. Here only the few unlucky come posting. Millions of people are really happy and fine and don't come here.

Nonsense!

1. My first iphone 5:, received Oct 23 - DUST in camera lens, right out of the box.

2. Went to Apple store to exchange it - Had to wait 45 minutes (even though I had an appointment) while crowds of iSheep were occupying the employees with questions like, "So how do I set up my email?" Employee brings out a white-boxed iphone -- 2 SCRATCHES on aluminum rim, right out of the box. I declined the exchange and left (angry).

3. Iphone #3 received from carrier Oct 31 - the little speaker holes are mis-drilled and SCUFFFED, right out of the box.

The problem has NOT been solved. Those people that are not complaining are either naive or have higher tolerances. I'd estimate more than 70% of all iphone 5's are defective.

LOL I love made up figures.

Well, I'm trying to make the point that the problem is rampant. Really -- think about this for a second. I'm just a regular guy who encountered 3 out of 3 messed up phones in a 2-week time span. You know that figure is high up there, likely in the ballpark of >50%. Either this, or I have some reeeeeally bad luck.

i'd think the same thing, but mine was perfect out the box. a month later, a bunch of scratches here and there, but that's wabi sabi

Pictures or I won't believe any of this nonsense. So what you waited 45 minutes. Then you go on an call others iSheep for getting help for stuff that's a legitimate concern. Lol.

I think some of you really need to re-evaluate your life if you're complaining about a couple of marks on your new iPhone.

For all those out there - enjoy this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybDKfGEw4aU

You, and others here, are posting in this thread because you have a problem! So asking in this thread where 95% of posting people had the bad luck will give you a colored opinion about the iphone. But howmany millions of people are enjoying their phones without trouble that are not posting here? That is the point.

I can also google 'problems mercedes benz' and get a lot of hits. But does that mean all Mercedes cars are bad? No, because the majority of Mercedes cars are trouble free but people don't post about trouble free cars.

Last but not least: How do you estimate that 70% of Iphones are damaged? And how do you know that people who say thay they are trouble free are naive? No offence, but that is just unfounded rousing what you are doing there. Come with facts please before making people nervous about their purchase.

I had mine replaced after 5 weeks due a malfunctioning Lock/Sleep button. The replacement that i got is about a week and a couple of days old now...it's stupid of me to not put my Griffin Reveal case with the clear back-cover. Instead i put the X-Doria Bump which doesn't have the back cover so it's bare on the front and back. I'm not sure which cost the scuff/scratch but i put in the pocket with my keys and some coins. Surprisingly, it's not that bad but still! i should've stuck around with the Griffin Reveal case :(
