or Applecare!

AppleCare+. If this is truly a manufacturing error you can swap it out for free if/when it happens, as many times as needed for 2 years. By then I'll have an iPhone 6 so big deal. :)

I'm pretty sure they'll deny any claims that they deem cosmetic.

Surely if they mark that easily Apple would expect loads of them to be returned.
I certainly would , I don't use a case and use the phone as a phone.

They shipped a phone that could barely make phone calls and sold millions.

And yes, that was real. Apple wouldn't have given away free rubber if it weren't. Steve Jobs wouldn't have flown in from Hawaii if it weren't real. They knew they messed up. But in the end it didn't hurt them.

Kind of ironic this time, given how it's been advertised as like a fine, high end watch. I guess it's the type of high-end watch that's for looking—not touching.

so if they dont cover scratches ill drop the phone in front of them and break the screen. they will repair that under applecare+

my iphone 4 ive never had issues with it dropping calls. i dont squeeze my phone covering the left side when im on a call.

the last point you made seems to be right though. at least with the black ones.

Thats BS. Some people did have issues but most didn't. Because if had, it would have forced Apple to recall the phone.

omfg!!! Open my iphone and it has a scratch on the side!!!!
Should I go to the apple store and swap it out?

not even a scuff! its like someone took a knife and scratched it quite deep!!!

I can confirm that there seems to be an issue with the Black finish.

Thanks to a friend that manages a carrier store here in the lower Mainland, I was able to get a sneak peek at the new iPhone 5, in Black it just so happens. When we opened it up and were checking it out, I noticed a small scratch on the bottom edge of the phone. It was a very minor scratch, but it still showed the raw aluminum through. And that was with the phone Brand New, right out of the box.

I hate to say it, but I think Apple is going to have a problem on their hands with this.

I got mine today. I've been *ultra careful* with it having read this thread. I already have a couple of small scuffs on it.

I'm not sure whether I caused the scuffs (I did not thoroughly inspect the phone after taking it out of the box) but if it gets any more scuffed than this I'm going to return it.

With the maps debacle and now this "scuff-gate" I'm a little bit disappointed.

Bottom line: If you're OCD about scuffs on your phone don't get the black one (yet). Sorry to have to post this.

I couldnt tell if you were trolling or not. :(

i'm sooo annoyed, heading out to my closest apple store now (Covent Garden) going to be so packed :(

The big scratch is bad enough, but you notice around the sim slot, scuffs there too...

PVD/DLC or paint

Wonder what coating technique apple used on the phone, hope its just not paint, they should have put DLC/PVD. If its paint, this is a major fail. When ordering the phone I was thinking about the black scuffing, but thought apple would have realised this an applied proper coating.

When I say DLC/PVD, these are techniques used on watches, and generally its resistant to scuffs, unless it makes contact with hard surfaces that would scratch.

Looks like free bumpers to all again.... geez apple does not learn....

Should I decide to return it and get a white one instead will I have to wait until they become available again or do Apple Stores stock extra units for exchanges etc?

I dont understand who can possible defend Apple in this scratch thing, if it really turns out to be true. Its not tolerable that a 750$ smartphone that Apple praises like its the best iPhone ever, who focus on the keynote the precise manufacter process and always enphantize the quality of its products is now releasing their top selling product with a problem like this. C´mon.....its 750$!!!!

I can assure you it's true (at least in my case it is). I have no interest in trolling and I'm not an "Apple hater". I'm still thinking about whether I'm gonna keep my black one (and live with it) or get a white one instead (and I'm not sure the white one doesn't suffer from the issue).

Such meticulous attention given to design and form only for the device to be a scratch/scuff magnet.

Really expect more from Apple given their unwavering attention to detail.

Add to this the half baked maps app and they're pretty under cooked (under Cook).

They've dropped the ball here some what. Disappointing!!!

What was a no brainer upgrade for me is now no longer so clear cut.

If just the chamfer wears, and it wears this easily, then very quickly you'll have a bare metal chamfer that should look great. :p
