black/slate with raw aluminum band would be the best looking.
I would not be surprised to see that combination being offered in next year's iPhone "5S".

You're still insane for switching to white that easily.
If you're not currently insane you're about to become insane. have fun with the world's most awkward and annoying 0.2mm black border around the screen!
A bit of scuffing near the chamfered edge cannot be compared to the complete loss of signal when holding the phone.Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results. -A/E
Have been forced to use a case for the last 2.5 years after the last manufacturing fiasco. Not dealing with it again.
Guys, I have my black iPhone 5 here in front of me and can confirm the reports.
Yes, it scuffs easily and yes, it's silver underneath. I already have three small marks along the edges of the phone and they're very noticeable. I will probably get over it, but if you care more about it than I do, it's something to consider before you go out and buy a black over a white. Either that or get it in a case ASAP.

I don't care what your fancy quote is.
It doesn't force you to use a case. The loss of signal was pretty forceful, but this isn't.This problem forces me to continue using a case. And, a primary feature of this iPhone is its design and build quality.
When consumers choose not to settle, maybe corporations won't expect us to. Of course, not all consumers are this discerning and can do as they please. I prefer the black model, but not enough to deal with all that.
my year old macbook pro's edging looks just fine...
the white one wont have these problems. im a little pissed i ordered black now. They should of tested this.
Who will be the first person to shave down the edge all silver all around?
curious to see what it would look like. chips look horrible
your macbook pro's ano is uniform. chamfer an edge like the iphone 5 where you have ano aluminum and bare aluminum meet and see how long that ano edge lasts.

Oh, it's definitely Apple's fault. Of course there was skepticism when the first reports came out- if I was the first person to own the iPhone 5, I could have thrown it against the ground as hard as I could and claim that the damage resulted from gently placing it on a microfiber cloth- on my bed. Point is, one report isn't a big enough sample size to make an accurate judgment. But when multiple outlets confirm the "scuffability" (one of them being iFixit, who intentionally tested the strength of the edge), it's obvious that it is a manufacturing defect.
But I don't think I'm making "excuses" to justify my purchase. Maybe I just don't feel like going through all the trouble to replace my iPhone right away, and I'm going to try living with it? I, nor the tons of other people that have preordered the black iPhone 5, could see the future last Friday. It wasn't an intentional decision to buy a phone with a defect. But it happened, and people will deal with it in their own ways.
IMHO, I think it will not scuff that easy. I mean, iFixit used a coin for crying out loud.

Sorry, if you scratch a black anodized aluminum body, this is not a manufacture's defect. This is normal wear and tear. It's a fact of life, and nature of the material used. So buyer be ware.
If you want to complain, make it about the fact that, one they used aluminum in the first place, and second they anodized it black.
Since these facts are known about the build materials before the purchase, Apple's decisions are not the fault, if you are not happy with the results.
Look at it this way, you buy a white or black car, and you complain that it shows scuffs and road dirt, road chips etc. Do you go back to the manufacture can tell them these are defects? Nope

Pics?
How did you get it so early? What were u doing that it scuffed already?
Don't have another phone/camera with me at the moment, but will try and upload some later in the day. There's a bunch that iFixit have uploaded as well which basically shows the same problem.
I'm in Australia. It's already available here. I haven't done anything other than place it on the table... so, yes, it scuffs pretty easily.![]()
if the paint starts chipping off on my brand new car(which is a defect) then i will bring it up with the company. More than likely they will have that part repainted so it wont do it.
paint chipping should not happen even on bumpers. if it chips there is something wrong with how they prepped the bumper. Rocks can chip hoods with metal. but that is a rock.
if sliding in and out of your pocket causes this. i think people are going to be mad.
I understand you completely, but cars do have a clear coat that helps with this. Also you don't touch your car all the time.. Hands and pockets, even empty ones, are abrasive. I never put my 4s in my pocket, with anything. Yet, there is a small almost visible scratch on the face. I don't know how it happened. But, most likely, some grit or sand got in my pocket and did it.
It's just normal wear and tear, completely unavoidable.
I am thinking one of those Invisi-shield covers should be perfect for this application.
If you drive home from the dealer and the paint is already wearing off from the wind and opening/shutting the door, it would be a defect. In fact, car paint defects are fairly common. It is up to you whether or not to call the manufacturer out on it.
Figures, its just a crappy job anodizing the aluminum. I really hope this isn't true, but I kind of had a feeling something like this would happen. .
