You know what I mean.

Yes I know. Sorry. But it's mildly annoying that people keep calling it "paint". Christina Bonnington at Wired keeps calling the finish "brushed aluminum" too. It's not brushed aluminum. It's nothing at all like brushed aluminum. It's bead-blasted. Completely different look than brushed.

After receiving my preordered black 5 this morning I noticed a defect in the lower left band. I went right to my local Apple store and as always they were great! Being fearful of easy scuffing or another defected black unit they let me exchange for a brand new white 5, no questions asked, no restocking fee, just smooth sailing.

They were very apologetic and genuinely seemed concerned. It's nice knowing that when you pay that kind of money for a phone the company and its employees alike stand by their product! Very satisfied.

which store did you swap it at?

I noticed a different kind of defect with my 64GB Black iPhone 5. There's what looks like a tiny sliver/defect in the casing between the aluminum back and the plastic at the top... it almost looks like something caught in there, but I was not able to get it removed with a small plastic tool. Knowing me, it will drive me nuts. Oh well... I'm going to go caseless this time around so maybe after the casing gets beat to hell I won't notice it anymore.

Well I called Applecare and the person on the phone talked to me while I opened my box and said he would take any note of damage and forward it so that if there was out of box damage I wouldn't be faulted one of my accidental damages.

My phone looks great! There's a speck of white stuck in the glass edge but it's from something getting in there, so I'll use a needle later. For a second I thought I was victim to "scuffgate" but after scraping at it, it was just a piece of excess glue, because it came off. The black phone is sleek as hell omg.

I ordered mine from AT&T... Anyone have any experiance with exchanging through them?? Is it better to call or hit the local store?

I wanted a 32GB but the 4 the guy brought all had scuffs yet the first 16Gb had none.
So glad I went with the 16GB, it's perfect and cheaper.

mine is missing paint on the bottom left corner, rather frustrated for a new device

Mine has a mark on the edge and it drives me crazy. I am a perfectionist that treats his things with great care.

Not sure if it is worth taking back, my closest apple store is almost 2 hours away. I got my phone from best buy.

Stopped by the Apple store at lunch. This store had at least 10 black demos setup. I looked at 4 of them, two of them showed specs of silver under the black band near the edges. I told myself I'd get the black this time if I get the 5, but I think I'll stick with white.

PS this was the Willowbrook store in NJ, about 50 people inline at 12. They had all models available except white 16GB AT&T.

Just got off the phone and they said they haven't been receiving any reports about out-of-the-box imperfections. When I told them if they're able to exchange it she said I have up to 14 days. Problem is I bought it from Verizon so I can't exchange it at the Apple store. To add to this, Verizon accused me of dropping my phone and refused to exchange it for me. What do?

That sounds kind of like what I'm seeing with mine. Someone else said it was adhesive so I might give another go at it later to see if I can "remove" it without damaging the phone.

I don't even consider myself particularly obsessive but I noticed it right away. Considering how much boasting did about this device having the tolerances measured in millimeters it's rather surprising that this happened actually.

Mine is week 37, white 64G, right out of box I can see small dents/nicks in the chamfered edge in two places ... some right under the home button and some on the back edge. See pics. I know it doesn't affect the performance, but c'mon, this is Apple, totally not expected.

Just out of interest, has anyone had/seen reports of nicks in the chamfered edge in the White version of the iPhone 5?

Almost flawless...

My black 32 gb iphone 5 has one small scuff at the edge when I opened the box. Hopefully the phone holds up ok in the long run.

Several scuffs along the edge, I'll see if the anidozation wears away more, if it does, I'll switch to white, if it stays the same, ill get another black one

64GB Black ip5 ordered from Apple.com, pristine, zero scuffs. This thing is friggin gorgeous. Sorry to all those with out-of-the-box defects. Hope you're in the minority and that you get quick replacements!

Have to say, this thing feels amazing... Personally I think it's noticeably thinner and lighter. Display is beautiful. I love how the black looks too.

So bummed.

I actually ended up finding a tiny mark on my edge, but it doesn't bother me too bad. The edges don't seem like they will get THAT much worse (knock on wood).

However, the back aluminum plate of mine is scratched up, two scratches. One is half inch long. Not acceptable!!

The edge is really tiny, but to have a .5 inch scratch on the back is dreadful.

Not really sure the white one will look THAT much better because the back could be scratched on a white one anyway, so I'm going to try another black, but it may be the 3-4 week wait.

I ordered a Black 32g from Verizon which got here today.

After all of the reports here I don't even dare deal with it. I just want to return this and swap it out for a white.

Verizon wants to charge me to return it, and it will take them 3-5 days to allow a replacement, which then will be back-ordered.

My local Apple store has all the white in stock - does anyone know if I would be able to go there, and have then return it and sell me a white one on the spot?

The girl I'm seeing works at an AT&T store. Her store sold around 30 or so iPhone 5's today and she hasn't noticed any problems with them nor has heard of any complaints from customers yet. That's making me feel better and am hoping for a good one when I get my shipment.

I'm curious about this as well. Haven't received my phone yet but thinking about swapping it.

You have to understand...

Members on this forum are MORE LIKELY to look and inspect the phone with a magnifying glass for damage. An average customer DOESN'T notice.

I'm not saying we are bad for doing this, we are just more keen to detail. But honestly, the average person buying a new iPhone really doesn't inspect the phone like we do. Most of them just slap a case on and go.
