Mine doesn't have a scuff mark but it has an area on the band that looks like the anodizing is very thin so it appears bluish. So much for apple quality.

Not sure what to do on this one guys. Got my black home and opened, at the outer band and back looked great! Here is the problem, the screen has something that is either a scratch or a fiber of some kind under the screen. It's about a quarter of an inch long. I can't get it on photo due to reflections. Should I risk swapping it out for another??

I looked into this thoroughly and would like to point out that it IS NOT THE ANODIZED aluminum that is wearing away. It is in fact a chamfered edge. I got a perfect one out of the box and just few hours into the ownership, I noticed some white showing in two places.

The dents and scuffs out of the box are obviously a machining fault and should be exchanged if they bother you.

Count me in on an "out of the box" defect. It's along the top edge in the middle. Not happy about it, but I'll swing by the Apple Store on my way home to see what they say about it.

Extremely unhappy right now  my OCD is off the charts and Verizon refuses to exchange my phone unless I pay a fee. I barely even touched my phone and I got these dents and discolorations on the sides of my phone.

After using the phone naked all day, in and out of my pocket, there is no additional wear on my black 64GB. A few nicks in the anodized layer but they are so small and unnoticeable that I consider it part of the manufacturer process, they were there when I opened the phone. My original 3GS had more marks on it than my iP5.

Visited the Apple Store for a replacement and they brought out a white box replacement phone. Same issue on the replacement they offered so they brought out another. The second exhibited even worse wear than my initial device and they said I needed to return online. Unfortunate....

Here's a good photo I took of my roommate's 16GB Verizon black model. Thought it was flawless but then a closer look at the edge bands where the antenna lines meet there seems to be smudgy areas where the black color isn't fully applied and the regular aluminum color shines through, similar to these other posts. Chiming in with yet another.

The iPhone 5 came out and the 4S camera still impresses. Good sign for me. haha.

Yup, a few scuffs on the bezel of my black iPhone too! Not sure if I should bother complaining about this to the apple store. Will they really exchange my phone right then and there?

Online? What, so you can get a scuffed iPhone and have no one to immediately swap? Then they can blame it on you because who knows what happened between your house and the store.

This is blowing up quick.

The one that was supposed to be mine was dinged on the top right of the band. Didn't end up getting it as I had to leave anyways. Walked in at three in the afternoon, not a soul in the store except employees. They had plenty in stock. (sometimes living in a welfare town has it's advantages) But after an almost an hour of them trying to get it activated I was out of time and had to leave. I might try again tomorrow but I'm leaning more towards just keeping my 4S at this point. Scratches will drive me nuts and I hate white phones.

Got home, very small wear on the aluminum it looks similar to the wear on the silver sides of the iPhone 4S, no scuffs that I noticed. Pretty cool phone, but I am kind of laughing at myself for being so excited, it really is all too familiar. A little disappointed Netflix is letterboxed, hope that gets updated. Good luck all!

I had a small silver spot on the chamfered edge of my iPhone 5 right out of the box. A black Sharpie fixed it right up.

Did they recognize that it was an issue?

Mine is like that only larger

Normally I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to get in another dig at the iPhone, but really guys. First world problems.

My scuff is in the exact same spot as the one in your second picture.

It's a $650-$850 device from a company whose core values include making the highest quality products in the world. First world problems, I guess, but people have the right to be pissed.

Had 2 out of the box defective. One the edge was scratched 1/4" and the other discoloration where all the bands met. At store now and they are exchanging no problem

Well that's great. Just like I've had a pristine white 64GB delivered, but that's not the point. It's obviously a problem, if people are having theirs fresh out the box marked and dinged. It's quality control that's the issue.

Also, if this is 'damage' is occurring from just packaging the phone, it could point to a manufacturing problem - imagine what it may look like in a few days, weeks, months.

It seems pretty durable at the moment, but it remains to be seen if it starts wearing off, or chipping. hopefully it doesn't with just normal use. Im not really worried Because i take really good care of all my devices. And the black is just stunningly beautiful. The white, I just don't like at all.

What do you mean? It feels the same as a 4/4S or what way "familiar"?

We had 2 delivered today. One seems fine. The other (week 33 in August) has 2 small scuffs.
