Is this the same group that freaked about hairline glass scratches on the back of their 4/4S phones and wanted new ones? lol :D I should get mine in a couple hours, I could care less if theres a little paint nick....because with time I will do it myself and or have a case on it anywho....

I'd like to see some of you at a car dealer freaking out about the same....

I just went down to our local west coast Apple Store - waited 15 minutes in line - purchased two 64GB ATT iPhone 5 models (1 white / 1 black).

Flawless.

BTW - cancelled my online Apple.com order that was still processing and 3 weeks out.

This is starting to bug me. I have an iPhone 4S White and picked Black this time.

With all these reports, what is the return policy from Apple themselves?

If I open up my box and I see these scuffs, can I go directly to my Apple Store, and get a replacement or even change to a White model? I've never had to deal with them before, but I'm not going to use a device if it comes shipped to me like this.

I feel like this is getting blown out of proportion, but how is it possible these are scuffed like this just from shipment? That seems to be that these are very easily prone to damage and I don't use a case on my device, but it seems it could be scuffed and dented by little things such as setting it down on a service or a small drop..

What is the replacement procedure?

Would you say that too, if your brand new car lost visible paint flakes around its edges, reviling the bare metal?

LOL, stop using this car analogy people. As someone who has a brother who details cars, stop it! You have no idea how bad paint is on most cars straight off the dealership! Get a fricking clue, you car comes with more scuffs and swirl marks, and so much embedded dirt you have no idea. Get a clue

Had you people waited in line you could have inspected your phones before leaving the shop. I was in and out in 30 minutes.

Now you'll have to wait in line to get a replacement. LOL.

I just came back from visiting my Apple Store. I looked at 5 of the 8 black demo phones and only one had a tiny pin prick mark. You'd practically need a magnifying glass to see it. I'm not being dismissive. Some of the photos posted here are pretty bad. Something is up. But if I didn't know about this thread I would have no idea there was an issue.

That said, I'm still switching to silver. I was SO torn when I placed my initial order. My gut was saying silver but I decided to "play it safe" and stick with black. The black face does look better but the rest of the phone looks way better in silver in my opinion. The black one looks featureless and "blacked out" to me. The silver one stands out. I love the matte sheen of the bead blasted aluminum and the mirror shine of the polished chamfer. Amazing. Very clean, hip, modern look to me. But you know, to each his own.

People swapping their black iPhones for the white version will be just as disappointed.

As proven with the MacBook Pro's, iPad's, etc, scratched or dented raw aluminium looks just as bad. The black might show the silver more easily, but the silver will show all the dirt and scrapes just as much.

I know from the band around the 4/4S that any dent or fall damage will cause a dark spot purely because of the way the light hits the uplifted areas.

Either way, if you intend to use a case, you probably dont care about how it will wear. For people using it naked, swap it out if it has damage from new, and then use the phone how you want and stop worrying, or buy a case.

I'm as OCD as the next guy, but I want to enjoy my products, no matter how expensive they are. The best way to do that is to leave them untouched by tacky plastic cases. Plus, there will be no significant changes to the next iteration, so its going to get beat up.

You can return orders from Apple directly to them within 30 days of receiving it, opened or not.

And my guess would be that the damage is caused by miserable underpaid suicidal chinese workers who are angry at Tim Cook. Either that or the machine doing the shiny edges is also taking chunks out of the unibody frame itself.

I'm not a very fussy consumer, but when I received my pre-ordered Iphone 5 32 GB in black, I immediately noticed a big DENT in the rear case as well as SCRATCHES.

I took it in to the local apple store and to their credit they very efficiently replaced it. Took the new one home, opened the box, and there were no HEADPHONES.

So far I'd have to say the quality control of the iphone 5 sucks. Apple should be all over the factory on these issues.

Agreed. However the problem area is the chamfer. The back is easily protected with a skin. So you really only have to worry about the chamfer. And there's really no way to protect that. As least with the white version any chamfer scuffs should be barely visible (compared to the black).

For my part, this whole discussion it moot now. After seeing both in person I absolutely LOVE the white and silver one!!! No question. I like it WAY more than the black. Scuffs or no scuffs. I KNEW I should have went with the white. The pics of it blew me away. But I've never went white before so I decided to "play it safe" and stick with black. Oh well. I'll probably have to wait 4 weeks.

It's a $650-$850 device from a company whose core values include making the highest quality products in the world. First world problems, I guess, but people have the right to be pissed.

And we have a right to laugh at them.

I think some people just have a basic compulsion to complain. This happens with every Apple release. Some minor "issue" gets blown all out of proportion.

Some may not like it, but the fact is we don't live in a perfect world. Personally I'd feel like too much of an idiot running to the Apple store to exchange phones because of a minuscule scratch or two. Eventually, when Apple finds this nonsense to no longer be cost effective they'll tighten up their returns policy and we'll all suffer.

Not sure if they will let you exchange for a different color, but they should certainly let you exchange it out for another black one. Anyone know for sure about exchange for different color?

I don't see why they would care about the colour of the replacement phone.

I know iPads they will let you change colors cause I did that with the iPad 3 launch, but I seem to recall at least wit one of the other iPhone launches they would not allow you to exchange colors.
