..I don't think a few mm shaved off the bottom will be noticible in your hand, but on a table it will be nice to have it angled towards you a bit.
Maybe it's a case for the new Apple iCalculator... :p

With the iPhone being released with the iPod touch this time around, you can't discount the cases being for the touch. Until I see a new iPhone in Cook's hand, I take everything with a grain of salt. But I can tell you one thing: if we get an iPhone 4 rehash, hello Galaxy S II.

If we are to believe the speculation about a redesigned iPhone 5, then I guess we should believe the speculation that the iPod Touch will remain the same except for a white version. If that is the case, then the iPod will not change it's dimensions and would certainly not fit into these cases - this is something entirely different.

People should stop freaking out about the idea of a "teardrop". Even calling it a teardrop shape is overreacting, as it looks to me like the taper is ever so slight, you won't even notice.

----------

That just means several case manufacturers got ahold of the same schematic.

I severely hope it does have the teardrop design, then all the haters can keep their ip4, and I won't have the same phone as everyone else.

While it is certainly possible that all these cases are made based off the same "leaked" schematic (which anybody with even a modicum of CAD experience could make), I think it is unlikely. The more likely scenario is that this redesigned phone IS real, but it's release date is uncertain.

You are correct that all the cases would look the same if they had built them based off this one leaked file. BUT, they would also all look the same if those were the actual dimensions, and the case makers had each independently gotten the design information from their own sources.

Assuming the latter is true (and frankly, is much more likely since the cost of setting up a manufacturing line is so high that I doubt this many companies would take a chance unless they had independently confirmed the redesign specs), that means MULTIPLE well connected sources are claiming this redesign is in fact the next iPhone.

Believe what you want, but Apple is smart, they know the current smartphone trends and would never release a product that was inferior right from the start.

It strikes me as very odd that Apple would give us a redesigned iPhone but keep the iPod Touch the same. If they increase the screen size of the iPhone but not the iTouch then tons of people are going to bitch that the iTouch didn't get a bigger screen. So every time I read that the iTouch isn't not going to change it's form factor I start to worry that the same will happen to the iPhone.

Yes, Apple could just change the form factor of the iPhone and not the iTouch but I think that's a mistake.

I think it would be odd for Apple to trick out the iPod Touch and leave the iPhone 4s looking antiquated on launch.

If you see me in line for the Galaxy S II, say hello. :D

I think this is all about price. People don't want an mp3 player that barely fits into their pocket, but are willing to make that concession for a phone because it makes it so much easier for them to use something they truly depend on. Not many people depend on their iPod to communicate.

The iPod touch and the iPhone already have a substantially different form factor on top of using a different screen technology (with the iPod touch not being IPS to keep costs down). The past few years the iPhone and iPod touch have been updated independently from each other. The 4th generation iPod Touch was released right 3 months after the iPhone 4 total redesign and did not look more like the iPhone 4 than the previous iPod touch generation.

I don't think the maintenance of the same overall iPod design will have any effect on whether they release a redesigned iPhone. I mean, there doesn't seem to be any doubt that there will be a phone announced with a 3.5" screen, the question is whether there will be a phone with a 3.7-4.2" screen announced as well. The iPod touch family will still have an equivalent sized iPhone counterpart this fall, I just don't think many people are clamoring for a large screen iPod.

Well.....I still think if the iPhone gets a larger screen and the iTouch doesn't, a lot of people will be upset. I also don't buy your idea that a larger iTouch would be frowned upon by anyone. It won't make it less pocketable, IMO.

Ultimately we will see in a few weeks. Just would strike me as a misstep IF they increase the iPhone screen size to 4" and don't do the same for the iTouch. Keep in mind that a larger iTouch screen means a better games experience and more likelihood people will considering renting movies from iTunes to watch on their iTouch. Apple knows this.

I never said that people wouldn't like it, I said that the demand isn't there. Not only that, some of the only concrete leaks so far have been of a white iPod touch screen with the same dimensions as before. For the 4" iPod screen to be true, assuming that is an authentic apple part (which it is widely believed to be) then apple would be introducing a second line of iPod touches with the main difference being a slightly larger screen?

I do agree with you that there are some benefits to a larger screen on an iPod, but it seems very unlikely.

I know about the rumors. I'm not saying it will happen. Just seems weird that Apple would give the upgrade to one device and not the other. (iP4 gets a retina display, iTouch follows suit 3 months later.)

The demand isn't there? Well, that's kinda a vague statement honestly. I think there clearly is a demand for a larger iPhone screen. Do iTouch users want the same? I can't say with certainty but I'm guessing they would be very happy to have that change if indeed it does come in a few weeks. And I'm also confident that many would bitch about not getting a screen bump if the iPhone does.

I don't think Apple will roll out two lines of iTouches. Either it gets the screen bump or doesn't. At the same time there is no guarantee the iPhone is even going to be redesigned in the first place. (Though I hope so.)

Agreed on the vague statement part, that to me would be like saying the demand for a retina screen on an ipod touch isn't there

Once the iphone has a bigger screen consumers will demand one for the ipod touch as well.

That is not vague at all if you read my statement in context. I am saying that the demand for a larger iPod touch screen is not there. Everyone and their brother who is going in to buy an android right now has their choice of 4"+ screens. Based on the the sales figures, people are flocking towards these newer large screen devices, taking potential business away from apple. Thus, there is demand for a large screen phone.
As for the iPod touch though, when is the last time you heard of somebody deciding to buy another mp3 player because the iPod screen is too small? Nowhere have I seen people complaining that the iPod touch screen is too small - online or in person. More importantly, there is no competition for the iPod touch in terms of screen size like there is for the iPhone.

We are basing this off the upgrade of the iPod touch screen to a retina display (a move done to increase compatibility among App display resolution). That is a sample size of 1 and really tells us nothing about their future plans. In a few days we will know the whole story.

Apple can't go above 3.8" screen size if they want to keep the Retina display branding, as anything above that drops below the 300ppi threshold. They would have to implement yet another new resolution. Though they can't simply double the old resolution like last time, as that would mean a 1920x1280 resolution which is obviously not feasible.

1024x768 on a 4" screen would allow them to keep the retina display naming, as it results in a ppi of 320. Though the problem with this is 1024x768 is a 4:3 aspect ratio, 960x640 is 3:2

Okay. That's all well and good. And yet if they bump up the iPhone screen size and not the iTouch, a lot of consumers will be pissed. And rightfully so. You either agree with that or you don't.

It's true consumers would want a bigger screen on their iPod Touch. However, the whole iPod line is responsible for 6% of the profit, and the iPod Touch is responsible for half of that (3%).

The iPhone is one of Apple's biggest flagship products, so i'm sure Apple would want to focus it's innovation on it first. Again, the iPod Touch was derived from the iPhone, so it would make sense if the iPod Touch remained the same as the 4th gen, but with an A5 processor and with a white faceplate.

The iPhone is responsible for nearly half the business at Apple. So make no mistake that Apple will focus on the iPhone more than the iPod Touch.

Not that I don't believe you, but can you provide a source link of these stats? Thanks.

Yeah i saw the figures a while ago, and figures stay in my head.

But here's something:

Oh yeah? Unless you are in Shanghai I doubt its an iPhone you are dealing with. But just for fun do us a favor, rip a box open and take some pictures?!

Judging by that chart I'd say iPhone sales clearly trump iPod's however I still don't know if I'm buying the idea that Apple will potentially increase the screen size of the iPhone and not the iPod Touch. That's even with the fact established that the iPhone has much fiercer competition and makes Apple more revenue vs. the iTouch.

Again, totally moot point if there is no redesign in the first place. However I'd still have to see for myself Apple give iPhone that larger screen and the iTouch gets the shaft. We will see in due time.
