I am holding out for the iPhone 6!

Most of us have to! Since we can't afford the big out of pocket to upgrade early every year. The iPhone 4 is definitely good enough to last 1 more year.

I'm still wondering if they'll actually call it the iPhone 5 or if they'll do a derivative like they did with the 3GS. iPhone 4.5?

Sell the iPhone 4 and you'll get enough to buy the next iPhone at the early upgrade price without having to come out of pocket more than $100 or so. Which is less than the upgrade price.

I'm going to wait for the 6th generation. I have a feeling the 6th generation will have a complete different look in terms of the front of the iPhone.

Changes to the home button, Changes to the size of the borders, Really improved camera, Lightning fast... ect

I'll hold onto my iPhone 4 and skip the 5th generation.

It's no use speaking about future releases of iPhones as Apple never gives hits about that. I personally think (taking into account the speed of development of the smartphone market) that will in somewhere in spring.

They might have surprises up their sleeve every now and then, but this would be strongly irregular.

Release Dates
iPhone: 6/29/07
iPhone 3G: 7/11/08
iPhone 3GS: 6/19/09
iPhone 4: 6/24/10

See a pattern? Every summer, within the same 2 weeks. Anything else would suggest they have quickly accelerated their development cycles. The R&D into the iPhone 4 (which will sell very well through June) needs to carry the iPhone 4 into the summer. Expect the iPhone 5 in late June, early July. And it's not because I know anything, it's because Apple *can be* predictable.

I agree but the only flaw in this analysis is that it fails to take into account the fact that Apple releases the iphone to different carrierers around the world off cycle.
A CDMA/Verizon iphone 4 would not be a "new" phone only a varient of the already released iphone 4.
A January release is therefore not necessarily inconsistent.

If they do release one in Jan I'd be a bit annoyed and probably wouldn't buy another iPhone again. A year life cycle is short enough.

Uh. In what world does that make any sense at all? An iPhone has a much longer life cycle than any other phone by any other phone manufacturer. Apple release one phone per year. Sony Ericsson release tens of phones in that time, HTC probably near a hundred phones in that time, Samsung etc all similarly release new phones every month, not every year.

Plus, of course, the obvious point that you don't always have to have the newest phone if yours still works! Though that seems to be a uniquely Apple thing, that Apple fans expect to replace their devices every year.
