Well, Im Verizon and I bought a 4s in Dec 2011. My account says Im eligible Dec 2012. I plan on upgrading to the 5 then.
It says nothing about, "You are eligible Dec 2012, but not for iPhone"

But even with the $175 ETF, and $199 for phone, its better than $800.
Plus Id happily do it to get my wife off the basic phones. She hates it. She loves my 4s, so why not. I plan to ditch the Unlimited to go shared anyway
Ill save $10/month and stop getting throttled

Just a few things.

If you have an ETF, it would be over $175.

From: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/support/customer-agreement
If your contract term results from your purchase of an Advanced Device after November 14, 2009, your Early Termination Fee will be $350 minus $10 for each full month of your contract term that you complete.

Also, your calculation of $800 for the phone only makes sense for the 32GB model, unless you have some higher taxes or import fees wherever you live. The price for the current 16GB model in Los Angeles California, $649.99+Tax=$703.61

Just check your eligibility. You may be eligible as the 20-month wait is not set in stone (to the horror of all the by-the-book types on here). My wife and have 4S's and we are eligible now for an upgrade. Whether this is an AT&T screw-up is open to speculation.

You're likely eligible for the early iPhone upgrade. This means another $250 on top of the subsidized price.

----------

You'll have to sit it out like the iPhone 4 users when the iPhone 4S came out. You're not special.

iPhone 4 users were eligible for the full upgrade if their primary line's bills were over $100 per month. That has been eliminated this year, so no more iPhone 5 with the full subsidy for 4S users.

No. My *639# text says:

"As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $36 upgrade fee."

Nothing about "early upgrade", nothing about a "discounted price".

Several members have gotten the same text, but when pressed further, they find out about the $250. It's an ambiguous and dangerous statement. Says nothing about what kind of upgrade you'll get.

I'm not sure why some members get that misleading statement whereas others are much, much more detailed when using *639#.

OK. I just remembered the EFT for the account was 175....or each line was 175 just to stop it early.

As for the Phone amount.....ok so its still cheaper, I was close enough.

I bought my iPhone 5 days after Christmas last year, see my upgrade date.
Are they gonna tell me no? Are they gonna say yes you can, but at $XXX instead of $199.

I bought the 4S at launch. My upgrade status on AT&T's website states "Early iPhone Discount", meaning essentially that I can upgrade if I want, but I'll pay an extra $250 on top of the fully subsidized price. Honestly, I didn't expect anything better.

I bought mine at launch too. Still says no-commit pricing. I'd love to pay the $250 fee instead. I actually haven't had a full upgrade price since the 3G.

Verizon gives primary line discounted price upgrade every 12 months.
Dont know how, but it says it right there. Am I reading it wrong.
Its been that way since 2001 when I opened the account with them.
I hope they dont screw me. Im looking forward to upgrade.
Not only so I get the new one, but my wife is drooling for my 4s .....she has a **** basic phone.

They're sneaky with this one. It is eligible for "A" discount. That is typically only $100 off the phone price, so you'd pay around $500 for the phone.

Maybe so. I know every year Ive bought a phone at new contract price.
