Anything too much larger and it will be a pain to carry in my front pocket. If the rumors are true regarding a 4 inch screen in just a slightly longer case, that will work for me. If they go to a 5 inch screen, I hope they offer two size phones. I doubt they would offer two sizes, so I hope the keep the overall size something close to what it is now.

I owned both the first iPhone & iPhone3G, was a big fan of the iPhone years ago, it was the phone from the Star Trek future back then to me. Then I got the Nexus bug, and have owned all three Nexus phones since then, been very happy with the Nexus line, but I am totally open to coming back to the iPhone again if Apple adds these to the next phone;

- 4.3" Screen both taller and wider. If they make it 4" taller only, sorry but that does not cut it for me
- LED Notification light like BlackBerry has had for years
- Widgets on the home screen
- Options for different theme, I am sick of the Fischer-Price Toy theme the iPhone has had stock from the beginning, times for a change
- Have some app icons be "live" like Windows Phone, for instance the weather app icon, it always shows 73 degree and sunny, even if it's freezing cold winter time. Be cool if that icon showed the true current weather.

Also why can't Apple sell two different sized iPhone's ? Keep the current 3.5" size, and then make a 4.3"/4.5" screen, still being the same iOS and inside components, just allowing a larger screen for those that prefer it. Most will still like the small screen, and others would like an option for much bigger screen. Doesn't mean one is better than the other, just give us choices, but still an Apple made iPhone, not force us to an Android phone if we like larger screens.

Agreed. That would be ideal, IMO.

I was bored, so I used AutoCAD to plot out a 4.3" 3:2 iPhone screen. Then I used similar measurements to my iPhone 4S to establish the rest of the phones shape for comparison.

If I were designing it, I would look to eliminate some of the empty space above and below the screen, especially if I am making the screen bigger.

My question, per these "leaks" if true, then why is Apple sticking with the same design / style as the iPhone4/4S, only taller and thinner, but generally the same looking phone ?

I thought Apple was known for being very artistic, and coming up with fresh and original designs, that popped and wowed people. If the iPhone5 does indeed look very similar to the 4/4S, to me it seems then Apple is now taking the safe approach, and not rocking the boat, and not, willing to throw caution to the wind, and come up with a radically cool new design.

I am surprised to see Apple play it so safe lately, they have been known to come up with some of the freshest and awesome designs the past 15 years, and now they are like the beige PC boring crowd

It needs to be taller and wider. But here on MR allegedly everyone uses their phones in landscape mode so it doesn't matter about width
It's all about rationalizing what Apple is giving them.

You'll get a 4 inch screen.
"Sources earlier told Reuters that the panels will be 4 inches corner to corner -- 30 percent bigger than current iPhones."

This has nothing to do with the Sharp president's statement, so the actual screen size is still up in the air.

Apple really needs 4.3" and be both wider and taller than the current 3.5" screen. To me if it's just 4" and taller only, that is not enough to win me back. I have been very happy with my three Nexus phones, and eagerly await the Nexus-Four this November, but if the iPhone5 is 4.3", I will be seriously tempted back.

I love the design of the iPhone 4/S, always have since the first real leaks came out. So if Apple were to keep this design for the new iPhone it would not really bother me. I mean I would definitely welcome a change in the design but it is not a must for me.

What I do want at this point is a bigger screen on my phone. Not just one that is elongated while keeping the same width but one that is bigger on both sides. Devices like the SIII, Galaxy Nexus and the HTC One X have really raised the bar imo with their large and beautiful screens and using them really makes doing anything on them much better than in the small screen of the iPhone 4/S.

The new iPhone will be faster, have great battery life, a better camera, better chips, etc. All that stuff is a given and at this point not much of a factor for me to get it. A bigger screen however, even if it is 4.5 inches, would definitely win me over.

I really hope the success and positive reception of the SIII, Nexus and HTC One has nudged Apple the right way and that they are prepared to offer an iPhone with a bigger screen even if they decide to keep the current size as well.

If they unveil something like a 4.5 inch iPhone this Septemer, I would be making my reservation for it before Tim Cook is done with his keynote :)

If not, well...it is off to another Galaxy I guess.

I like how you are settling for 4.5 like it's small but gets the job done. Why don't you just buy a 7 inch iPad Mini with a VoIP app and leave my iPhone screen alone.

it is roughly 8mm wider and 12 mm taller... They could probably trim the height a little bit I am sure

Looks good. If they really wanted to keep the overall size limited, they could easily trim the dead space at the top and it would be 5mm shorter. They could also make the home button oval and save another 5 mm.

Regarding the design, when the iPhone 4 came out over 2 yrs ago, Steve Jobs likened it to the design of an old Leica camera. Is is elegant, yes, but by no means modern-looking. I really see them getting away from that look and going with a more modern design.

As real as some of the leaked pictures look, I really can't imagine Apple simply coming out with a stretched iPhone 4, unless it's a different model...say they do a new iPhone 5, a stretched iPhone 4 HD, and keep the 4S for now.

Who said they are just releasing one iPhone model next month? Maybe there will be a couple of them. That way everyone gets what they want.

I used cardboard to match the thickness and square edgeness of the current iPhone. so I could feel it in my hand and my pocket.

Will post pic in a second.

I do not seem them causing fragmentation of the aspect ratio like that... if they change to 16:9... Every iPhone from here on will be that way until there is a reason to change

That's a good point. The only way around that would be to use letterbox bars when in portrait mode and then display videos and websites in HD landscape mode, but that seems like a lot of work.

I'm really just hoping they stick with the 3:2 aspect ratio.

I think if they did make the screen 4.3-4.5" I would seriously wonder if I might have been served better by waiting vs getting the Galaxy S3. However, I still think for me, regardless of screen, I think I just wanted something new. A different OS.

If it is just tallphone, I won't regret my choice in the least. If it's proportionately increased, I will wonder just a lil bit.....

Don't get me wrong, I don't regret my choice but there is something comfy feeling about a familiar OS.

However, I am LOVING my 4.8" screen, I feared it would be too big, but it really is a pleasure to use esp when checking things on the web.

MAN! YOU'RE SPOT ON! THAT'S THE PERFECT iPHONE! (yes i'm yelling :D)

Their math is flawed.... or they are rounding significantly up from the truth. Cuz you only gain roughly 16% surface area going from 3.5" @ 3:2 to 4" @ 16:9

Going with 4" @ 3:2 results in roughly a 23% increase in surface area on the touch screen

Nope, apparently "landscapers" just want taller so then it becomes wider when you turn it if that makes sense? They don't want wider when the phone is standing up. iPhone needs to be 4.3-4.5in to get back the #1 ranking from the S3 imo, 4in just doesn't really make sense.

I am a "landscaper", as you call it. I don't care if the phone width increases along with the height. I just want the aspect ratio fixed, so that when I watch an HD movie or video, it fills the screen with no bars on the sides. 16:9 is what I am looking for. For me, whether it's an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, it's more of a utility than just a larger screen at 4:3 or 16:10 aspect ratio.

Why do I want this? Since Apple is presenting these "iDevices" (along with the Apple TV, which I also have), as solutions for watching and pushing HD content from screen to screen, all these non-Apple screens are universally 16:9 aspect ratio, and that HD broadcast content fills those 16:9 screens, from corner to corner, with no bars.

It's jarring to have such an inconsistent presentation going from 16:9 to 4:3 when Apple is all about simplicity, and design above engineering. 16:9 is such an easy standard to comply with.

Can you explain a little more in-depth specifically why a 4" iPhone won't be a good solution for you?

"LED Notification light like BlackBerry has had for years" - I've never known Blackberry smartphones to be innovating since, oh about 2006. What does this mean??

"Options for different theme, I am sick of the Fischer-Price Toy theme the iPhone has had stock from the beginning, times for a change" - Could it be that you've become used to tinkering with the Android OS on your Nexii? Is it really a necessity for how you use the phone?

" Have some app icons be "live" like Windows Phone, for instance the weather app icon, it always shows 73 degree and sunny, even if it's freezing cold winter time. Be cool if that icon showed the true current weather." - I've noticed that the calendar app on iOS is currently live, but I hear you.
