April 2010: http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone

iPad 2 design and functionality was also leaked. iPhone 4S was also leaked. A5X chip iPad 3 was also leaked (+ same design was also leaked).

The iPhone 4 would have been even bigger if it had not leaked (because until the Gizmodo story, there was really little information about the successor of the iPhone 3GS).

Point me to concrete proof of what the next iPhone is going to look like, then. What about the Apple TV or the next line up of iMacs or Power Macs? Nothing but rumors.

And the leaked iPad 2? Wow, it looked just like the first iPad, no big surprise there.

That there are no photographs right now, doesn't mean there will be any before an announcement. If Apple manages to keep everything a secret right until the announcement, only than they have managed to keep it a secret.

And yes, the leaked iPad 2. The solid border was clearly gone, you saw the location of the speaker grill and the cameras. You saw the whole design.

I don't think you've got a good argument with "Wow, it looked just like the first iPad." - It might be similar, but the design was leaked nonetheless.

Tell me with all the honesty you have: when was the last time Apple announced an iPhone or iPad with features you did NOT expect? I think there's a big possibility that that has been years ago.

What if...

I think this must be a fake but the shot looks surprisingly real - The Screen measures exactly 4".

This isn't rumor, or even speculation about the iPhone 5. It's just a "what if" scenario: :)

There has been a lot of infighting about whether going to a 16:9 4" screen is a good move, or if Apple should stay with the current 3.5" display.

People opposed to a larger screen say that it will make the iPhone taller, and that current iPhone apps won't look good stretched out.

But what if both of these drawbacks were overcome with a 4" display. What if an iPhone with a 4.x" display was just as wide and just as tall (or even shorter) as the iPhone 4/4S, and current apps looked great on it, but so did 16:9 video and future apps designed for a 16:9 display?

Imagine an iPhone 5 (it will probably be called just "iPhone" like was done with the naming of the new "iPad") with a tapered, rounded aluminum back similar to the iPad. And imagine that instead of having dead space on the front above and below the display, the 4.x" display covered the entire face of the iPhone, except for narrow gaps between the display glass and the aluminum edge at the top and bottom, for the speaker and microphone.

How would a full front screen work? What about the Home button?

The home button, and the upper and lower dead areas (when current apps are running) will be generated on the display when required. There is really no need for a physical Home button taking up space.

When old 4:3 iPhone apps are running the Home button and dead areas appear on the screen. When newer 16:9 iPhone apps come out, or watching 16:9 video, they will take up the entire display.

But when newer 16:9 iPhone apps are in use, there is no Home button on screen, how would you get back to the home screen?

Simple. A new gesture will always take you back to the home screen. Even the onscreen Home button is really unnecessary.

This configuration would be great, as it solves all of the problems that people have mentioned, and it would be a beautiful and unique looking iPhone.

I seriously doubt these 'taller' iPhone rumors. I believe John Gruber is right when he states that if they go 4", they'll simply decrease the size of the top and bottom bezel and fit the 4" screen on the current form factor.

The top and bottom bezel is a serious waste of space, I have to agree with you. If they were going to keep the iPhone 4/4s design and include a bigger screen, I would hope they would accomplish that by eliminating all that bezel up to rather than "stretching" the phone.

I refuse to believe the next iPhone will look like that. That is pathetic, and if released I hope it tanks. No way Apple would do that though, just no way in hell. They HAVE to know how stupid that would be.

I do not believe that this hires press shot is the real deal but I believe that they are very close:

The iPhone's design especially its front is now some kind of iconic: the symmetry, the circular home button, strong rounded corners and the large top and bottom spaces form together the iPhone's DNA. You immediately recognize simple plain black and white icons as an iPhone with consist just out of a few lines representing mentioned attributes. This is Apple's asset, everybody on this earth recognizes an iPhone as easy as an Coke bottle from a far distance. Why should Apple change the iPhone's identity?? Apple build one device per year, they haven't changed the front for years and are still outselling with just one design every other HTC, Samsung who present every quarter 10 new phones with 10 new designs. They do not need to change their core design principles to be successful. Compare this to other iconic products (Porsche 911, Rolex Submariner), their design DNA hardly change over decades. Why are they suing Samsung and others not to copy this core design principles they use and rely on? Because it's much harder to have and keep an own identity with a phone than i.e. with cars (where you have more room and parameters to define an identity).

Apple won't drop the iPhone's DNA which is their most valuable asset, they will keep the iPhone's front while changing only sides and the back.

The 4" screen were only rumors but otherwise the source like Reuters sound trustworthy and the new frontcover with which has shown up complements Reuter's rumors. The rumors about the resolution makes sense because for app developers this change is minor and existing assets like pictures, icons, etc. don't have to be prepared for a new resolution (compared to a 720p switch). This 4" rumors paired with the iPhone's strong DNA make the (front) design of the iPhone 5 very obvious.

Apple will significantly change the iPhone's front when edge-to-edge displays will be possible and this won't happen very soon

No they don't. The shots look surprisingly like Apple's press material (which is largely made in illustrator, so there's real for you). Because that's what they're made of. This is a mock up made from iPhone 4 press shots, that took about ten minutes.

iPhone 4 for me. I did not expect them to squeeze so many pixels in that small a screen

True. 4S camera as well. Much better than I anticipated.
