Agreed, put it on the second page. This "might/might not" constant chatter is not helpful.

Oh I forgot...yes...the "Specs" argument. My bad. AND the Closed vs. Open debate. Yes...that too. It's so open that I can't upgrade to the latest Android version, because it's not available for carrier XYZ. But that's not Android's fault, or the Phone's fault. You can root it though. That's awesome...root it, then download the newest launcher, then reset it, and do this, and do that. Then when that's all done, it's no better than it was when I started. But hey, my icons are Green! Cool...

Makes sense. The iPod is pretty much at an endgame; there's not really anything more they can do with it. Even the Nano runs something that looks like iOS now, and could run iOS in the future (hell, the AppleTV runs it, why not the Nano?). Indeed, last September's event was as much about iOS 4.1 and 4.2 as iPods as I recall.

Additionally, Mac-philes have criticised WWDC for being all about the iPhone lately; seems like a reasonable idea to kill two birds with one stone and shift the phone to the Autumn event, which would cover all the mobile hardware, and leave WWDC to software, ensuring enough time in the keynote for both OS X and iOS.

Moving the iPhone release to autumn could also help shift more units since it's not long before the Christmas shopping season. The initial sell-out of units in September would give way to about a month or so of calm before it all goes nuts again in November/December.

Only drawback is the people coming off two year contracts who won't or can't go SIM-only for 3 months, though given the amounts of money people have supposedly spent on the iOS ecosystem, customers jumping ship may be less of an issue for Apple than in previous times when a phone was just a phone.

I'm fine sticking with my iphone 4 for a while longer. It is great and if they give or at least preview iOS 5.0 ill be very happy :)

Millions wouldn't agree with you but I do.

They'll all get there eventually. It happened with PCs. Do people really care if they have a 3.2 GHz chip or a 3.4? In most cases, no.

Smart phones aren't 100% there, but they're getting close for many people.

Now...tablets are another story. People will want them to keep improving until they can do everything a PC can currently do. But the things people want to do on a 3-4 inch screen are limited by the devices size and most folks are starting to realize that current smart phones are capable of doing all of those things with the hardware they already have.

Am sure Steve will want to launch this one, can't wait to see him back on stage again

Okay, now you're just antagonizing people...lol

Widgets? Blah...waste of time/space IMO. 4G? No carrier yet has true 4G. Sprint I guess? They're the closest. Most the others are all 3.5G

At least they used the image of the phone for this article and not the stage shot of Steve with iPhone on the Keynote screen. Seriously, every time I see that stage shot, it implies an actual announcement, as opposed to a rumor regarding the product.

Ever since the iPhone came out I've said that it will eventually replace the iPod. That day may be coming sooner than we guessed.

Someday the iPhone will be just like the iPad. There's no 'iPod Touch,' just an 'iPhone' that you buy with or without a 3G or 4G chip. And it's up to you if you want to buy service to go along with it or not. (They could still call it the 'iPhone.' The chip-less one would come with a booklet telling you about Skype and Viber and other wifi phone services.)

Such a device would naturally go on sale before the holiday season, so maybe we're close to that happening. I don't think it'll be this year, but maybe they're getting us ready for the year when it does happen.

Well. You have answered my questions and thank you for that.

This is all the argument that I could ever hear from my colleagues who are not pro-apple or are anti-apple.
This is what you would here from an android fanboy as well.

I really like android. The reason I have Nexus S; though I was forced to some extent.

For me, there's no way for an android phone over an iPhone. In the US? Yes due to carrier interference but not otherwise.

OK? :D

I don't know what else Apple can add to its existing iPod line besides small improvements... a few of their recent "revolutions" (buttonless Shuffle, touch-screen nano) have actually been steps backward, imo.
Absolutely, man I hated the Dentyne Shuffle. Of course, this happens from time to time — iPod 3 was a loser with the 4 touch buttons at the top. The nice thing about Apple, when they make true mistakes, it shows in the next revision when they come back to what works.

I think the current iPod line is just about perfect. I just wish the Shiny Back would go away for the Classic and the Touch. Looks pretty for the first day... then even one scratch blows that.

Ok, I'm convinced.

Also, comparing a product that hasn't been released yet to a product that hasn't been announced yet is a rather weak argument and makes zero sense.

I wouldnt put too much into this story. If its being delayed its because they need to put out the verizon and att at the same time. Probably dont want to put it out THIS fast because the Verizon phone JUST came out.

This is a smart move.

Just buy what you like, but being all anal about specs is lame. Having the currently superior specs isn't gonna make anyone's penis any bigger, despite what you may think.

And what exactly do you plan to run on that extra horsepower? What effect does it have on battery power.

Congratulations on being caught up with the sheep in the new CPU clock speed race.

TheRegister seems to reckon it's not due until 2012:

There's been some debate on whether these articles are talking about Apple's fiscal year 2012 which begins in 2011....or the calendar year 2012.

Personally, I tend to think maybe these rumors are right and Apple is shifting the iPhone announcements to the fall moving forward. That would give them more time to focus on software at WWDC each year, with new hardware in the fall, in time for the holiday season.

Apple releases products in predictable time frames. iPhone 5 will be released in June. An LTE Verizon iPhone 5 might take an extra month or two but I doubt it. Apple took it easy with the iPad 2 (low res cameras, 512ram instead of 1gb, and same res screen) because competition is so far behind. This is not the case with the iPhone. Quad Core Android devices will be coming in the Holiday season of THIS year. That would not fare well for the iPhone if it gets released on September.

Hmmm. I was fully convinced that dethmaShine was being totally sarcastic with his posts. Seemed obvious to me.

But I see that 5 other posters don't think so. Those are some pretty big odds...5/1...am I really right?

Yeah, I still think I am. :p

Edit: 7 now!

Based on past events, Apple has generally held an OS Preview event in March/April and 3 months later released the final Software along side new Hardware. If this time around the OS Preview is not coming until June, then I believe that new Hardware will get released along side the new Software 3 months later during their September media event.

This Summer is going to be about Lion.

Yes, can't really comment on non-US stuff. I'm sure overseas that the carriers are better, regarding updates, etc. At least that's what I hear...
