During the press conference, Tim Cook called iPhone 5 the worlds thinnest smartphone. It looks like this title has already been taken by the Android OPPO Finder. Take a look:

It was never the thinnest smartphone.

Though I gotta say, the humps at the back are laughable. I always thought it was ridiculous with the hump on my GS2 and the Razr

Looks good, but is it as fast? Quite frankly I think Apple should stop here on the thinness factor and focus more on the internals such as faster CPU / GPU, bigger battery, etc. However competition is always good!

Can you actually buy the Oppo though?

No.

So for all intensive purposes...

Though I won't admit succumbing to Apple's propaganda.

I think Apple walked back the "world's thinnest" claim before the keynote was done. The website has never made that claim. It just says it's the thinnest iPhone ever.

That said, the important thing isn't whether the iPhone 5 is the thinnest, but whether it achieves a good balance of thinness and functionality. I think it does.

So if I make a phone thats 4 inches thick, but has a section at the bottom that is 5mm, I can claim worlds thinnest phone?

Guys the measurement has to be done at the thickest part of the phone. On the Razr, it's like 11mm. Thats the size of the original iPhone. So NO the Razr is not thinner. On this phone, I guarantee the camera bump knocks it out as well.

Apple is correct.

I hate camera humps :( when i had an S3 I had to buy a case just to reduce the chance of the lens getting scratched when I lay it down.

This being an Apple / Mac / iPhone fansite ... I will just say this ... I don't care if this Oppo?? phone (which isn't even on the market someone said) was half as thin as the iPhone 5 ... I wouldn't give up my iPhone for it!

Anyone care to fill me in on what an "intensive" purpose is???

Protrusion like that for the camera seems like a recipe for disaster. As another poster said, definitely would feel like I'd need a robust cover on it as to not scratch it.

And as another said, we're definitely as thin as we ever need to be..possibly already past the sweet spot (for most people). Give me a larger battery instead of working on a slimmer design all day-every day.

I'm not disagreeing with the OP at all, but aside from the fact that Tim Cook said it, does it really matter? I mean. can you actually perceive the difference? Just wondering...

Being the thinnest stopped being a feature a few years ago and is now mostly a pain because it just makes devices unwieldy.

Count the camera bump and I don't think it's the thinnest phone.

Edit: Also how big is the screen? It's easy to make a phone thinner when you have a 5"+ screen to spread out behind.

What's wrong with the hump? Does the phone have to be 100% flat? Why? This might be one reason why iPhone 5 camera has its weird purple flare/tint - Apple decided to squeeze camera module into too tight space for lens to have proper parameters.
