2010 iphone named: iphone 4 (because it would be dumb to call it iphone 5,6,7,8 or anything else.)

Why didn't they call it an iPhone 2 then, if it's not because of the generation it was? After all, it was the second "form factor", where the first 3 iPhones all looked similar in design.

I think iPhone is the most important innovation since the World Wide Web in the early 1990s. It put the Internet in your pocket, always at your beck and call. Contacts, calendars, email, searching/browsing, GPS, gyros, etc...I think it's still probably hard to for us in the present to understand the larger ramifications.

The Palm with Sky modem was the first to do that. Then a year or 2 after innovation on those devices just stopped til the iPhone came out.

This is for all the stupid idiots that don’t know how the real world works.

2007 iphone named: iphone (because it’s a cool name)

2008 iphone named: iphone 3G (because of the 3G speed)

2009 iphone named: iphone 3Gs (because of the extra speed for the 3G)

2010 iphone named: iphone 4 (because it would be dumb to call it iphone 5,6,7,8 or anything else.)

2011 iphone named: iphone 4s (because every two years they like to add a “s” for speed and calling it 5 would be retarded when it looks the same. It also allows them to sell a crap load of new phones with very little changed.)

2012 iphone named: iphone 5 (because that is the name. If you ignore the dam “generation” and how many phones there were. And if you look at the world outside your nerd house; you will notice that EVERYONE else in the REAL world is waiting for the iphone 5. It will just confuse to many people and make even less sence to call it anything else. READ EXAMPLES)

The generation argument is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard.

Generation Example:
2012: iphone 6
2013: iphone 6s
2014: iphone 8
2015: iphone 8s
2016: iphone 10
2017: iphone 10s

Makes sense Example:
2012: iphone 5
2013: iphone 5s
2014: iphone 6
2015: iphone 6s
2016: iphone 7
2017: iphone 7s

Nerd speak “well you can’t call the 2016 iphone 7 because it’s the 10th phone”

DUMBASSES!!

Totally agree. Some people here are simply morons.

I also think they will / should keep the numbers so they can keep adding the “S”. If they drop the number every other year the phone would be called “the new iphone s”?

MacBooks with minor spec bumps are still called "the MacBook" so I wouldn't be surprised if they drop designations for naming. Unless they feel doing so drives more sales than otherwise (apparently not the case with the new iPad).

I was telling someone about how turn by turn navigation would be available in iOS 6. He said 'Did they just skip the 5?', thinking i was talking about the name of the phone.
He was just your average guy, not a 'geek'. So you can see how naming the iPhone '6' just to keep with the generation would be confusing to some (possibly very many)

It'll definitely either just be called the iPhone or the iPhone 5 - well in my opinion anyway.

As for size I personally like the current size but I don't mind them making it 16:9. Wider? No thanks - and yes I have used larger screen phones before. They just aren't for me.

But in reality, just as the name doesn't matter it doesn't matter what Apple change - if anything. They could put the 4S innards into a 3G/3GS style case, or just introduce a new colour and it won't matter.

Why? Because they will still sell MILLIONS. All this talk about how Apple won't do this, won't do that, its ridiculous. They can do what they want, and they will and not bat an eyelid.

So chill, sit back and just wait. And once it's announced you can either buy it or not.

They will sell no matter what, but they will die faster than RIM if they just sit back and stop innovating. (And I'm not suggesting that's happening, just that it seems possible given the lack of amazing recently from Apple.)

The cell/mobile computing market moves terribly fast.

Here are some things that I would be concerned about if I were Apple:
1. iPhone is no longer hip or cool.
2. iTunes is widely disliked and disparaged.
3. Everyone is moving to cloud-based media storage and streaming, and Apple's proprietary walled garden approach is unlikely to succeed. Amazon has the best strategy as they are hardware agnostic. For now, Google and Apple would like you to buy their hardware. EDIT: Google TV is "partnering" with hardware manufacturers and has an integrated web-based system if your tv or set top box can connect.
4. Portable media consumption via tablets is here, and Apple doesn't have an affordable offering. (A mini-iPad would fix this, so maybe they've figured this one out.) Everyone will have a slate, and most will be cheap and 7-8" because they're more portable.

If you look at the software environments, both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G were the same architecture generation (armv6 with device types iPhone 1,1 and iPhone 1,2). Mainly the cellular radios were different.

The 2nd generation 3GS environment was for armv7 architecture with an iPhone 2,1 device type.

My guess is that this reported new device generation (with a reported iPhone 5,x device type) will just be called "iPhone", similar to where they went with latest generation of iPad.

It had never occurred to me until now, that Apple's motivation could very well be just that. By keeping the iPhone rather small, the incentive to buy an iPad is huge.

This is a very good point!
This never occurred to me either.
If that were proven, I'd probably ditch iphone purely on principle.

Hopefully this is not apple's motivation.

I stand in line at the airport, at the concessions, or wherever and as such, having a smartphone with a larger display makes it a whole lot easier on ones eyes (and I have 20/20, no glasses) when it's used so frequently throughout the day.

Exactly. That's why the larger screen on the phone makes sense. It's not always practical to carry a tablet, and the size bump on the screen makes it so much easier on the eyes.

The Palm with Sky modem was the first to do that. Then a year or 2 after innovation on those devices just stopped til the iPhone came out.

I remember (and I was looking at the time), for a cell phone, wifi enabled, full html browser, email, contacts, and music.

Palm had an awful browser and I don't know if it had wifi. Back then you had windows CE devices and palm devices and none of them, really came close to what the iPhone pulled off. God, that brings up awful memories of having to load music on sd cards (maybe mmc...whatever). And let's not forget those crappy screens the others had....the iPhone's IPS capacitive screen was amazing.

I don't know why Palm didn't integrate it all, they were halfway to what Apple did.

So you can see how naming the iPhone '6' just to keep with the generation would be confusing to some (possibly very many)

Exactly. Also ask your parents what it should be called without explaing. Just tell them all the current names.

Generation IDIOT Example:
2012: iphone 6 (ios 6)
2013: iphone 6s (ios 7)
2014: iphone 8 (ios 8)
2015: iphone 8s (ios 9)
2016: iphone 10 (ios 10)
2017: iphone 10s (ios 11)

This is the most gay way to name a product ever.

Apple will drop the number or do the following because it makes sence.

Makes sense Example:
2012: iphone 5
2013: iphone 5s
2014: iphone 6
2015: iphone 6s
2016: iphone 7
2017: iphone 7s

The Palm with Sky modem was the first to do that. Then a year or 2 after innovation on those devices just stopped til the iPhone came out.

OmniSky Minstrel V. I used one of those circa 2001 with my Palm V. People thought is was absolutely amazing that I could read email and check movie times while sitting on the train.

Then there was the Palm Treo and Centro line a few years later. I skipped the first generation of iPhone because there were apps and App stores for the PalmPilots and Treos, but not for the original iPhone. The 3G changed that immediately.

One thing that hasn't changed much is that the data plan for the OmniSky was about $40 a month.

Oh man! I miss that tapered mockup of the iphone 5, MR used to plaster our faces with!

...actually NO I DON'T!!

I somehow think that the new iphone will look VERY SIMILAR if not IDENTICAL to the old one...

Wow again over 100 posts and no real talk about the phone, just more naming posts. Holy crap! Talk about beating a dead horse.

Here is my thought on the new iPhone. If these mockups are correct and it's slightly longer, has 4G, another little "S" type spec bump and mini connector, I'm pretty sure I will not be upgrading from the 4S. I only went from the 4 to the 4S for SIRI. Right now my 4S is awesome. Works with my car (special 30pin Y-Cable), works with my living room dock, computer room dock, clock radio beside my bed dock, etc. So if the truth about a smaller connector is true that in itself will cost me money or wait times for getting new cables to work with various stuff I have lying around as well. Also from having iOS6 for a bit now it's pretty solid but looking at it from a consumer not a fanboy what will be the draw over people who have a 4/4S to switch?

I can just see trying to explain this to someone who asks me "Hey you're a Apple geek, tell me about this new iPhone that's out how is it different then my 4S"
Me: "Well, it's longer, so you get another whole row of apps"
Them: "I like the size now"
Me: "You get 4G so it's faster"
Them: "It's not available in my area"

I have had every iPhone on launch day since the original launch day but really not excited about this one. I admit I did want a larger screen but also for landscape browsing, txt and email, to me this looks like it will still be cut off by the keyboard unless they make some strange long keyboard. I honestly think upgrading to the 4S was a waste of money. SIRI is great (esp now that I have it working with my new car and it can read and send txts). I don't really see the "WOW" factor anymore. Hopefully the rumors, betas are leaving that "wow factor" hush hush because this is the first time since the first one that I will probably skip.

Hopefully I'm totally wrong and they pull something out of their hat but I really think that I would be fine with my 4S for another year and even people with a 4 would be also.

Totally agree...

I like the line about:
Me: "Well, it's longer, so you get another whole row of apps"

lmfao!

And it's true... what are apple thinking here not widening the display?
What *is* the point getting another line of apps?
What? Are we supposed to rotate the phone every time you're trying to pinch out some more real estate?
The more you think about this, the more ridiculous it becomes.

I'm still on my iphone 4. Perhaps there won't be enough sway for me to upgrade.

... but geez I hope I'm (we're all) wrong.

Making the iPhone taller without added width to the screen real estate sounds very far fetched.

Let me correct that for you:

sounds very far stretched

----------

In all honesty, it'll probably be called the "iPhone Fievel", and feature images from the film "An American Tail" on the back case. Fingers crossed for this.

:apple:

and for sure it's:

Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight............

God I hope we don't get the same tired old design that's just a bit taller.

That's the worry - and it's looking more and more likely as leaked part and accessory details are leaked.

You can totally understand anyone that's still on 3GS or older getting excited, but for a lot of us (well for me anyway) it's a HUGE disappointment.

I panned the 4S because the screen was the same size, and unless there's something super *wow* in the next release, I might pan it also.

There's a strong possibility I may go S3 this time around, and come back to iphone in another 2 years (end of that contract) if there's good progress (on iphone). There's also the possibility iphone could be dead by then.

In history, apple dived down to near death. I'm really hoping history doesn't repeat itself.

But here's an idea, perhaps apple should license iOS to other handset manufacturers.

Unless these leaks are incorrect, for a second year in a row, Apple will be launching a phone that is 6 months- 1 year behind technologically.

I could understand last year as the 4s seemed like an obvious fallback option they took if LTE didn't make sense to launch. They were also consolidating the different GSM and CDMA designs, while taking account of the new battery draw of the dual core.

This new phone should feature a case redesign as significant as the 3Gs to the 4, the screen needs a major upgrade--much greater than has been leaked, and then it has to have what other modern phones have (LTE, best processor.)

Moving out of their ecosystem is easier than ever. Google play will store 20,000 tracks and let you stream them from anywhere and download, it automatically deals with your iTunes library, even uploading new purchases....and it's free, unlike Apple's Match. Amazon will usually have the best price on music, and its download manager will all files to your pre-existing iTunes library.

So, that just leaves your apps. Most all of them are on Android, although some would cost you money to replace.

Dude... your post nailed it.

Surely apple need to think about this.

I would have to assume that Apple is going to stop adding anything to the end of iPhone. Think about it, they don't have a MacBook Pro 3, etc etc. This is not done on any of their computer lines or their iPod line. Just recently they dropped numbering of the iPad line and called the 3rd rendition 'the new iPad'. In my eyes, this lends credence to the current naming system to be altered and be simply called 'iPhone' or 'the new iPhone'. Thus letting the consumer decide how to differentiate the devices, most likely by year. i.e. iPhone 2012.

Well... the Original iPhone came in 4GB and 8GB models. That was what was released in June 2007. In February of 2008, Apple introduced a new model that was 16GB. It was the same phone but with more memory, but it was touted as a new iPhone, even by Apple (see link and their own headline) so technically, it was the 2nd Generation iPhone.

Apple Adds New iPhone & iPod touch Models

So, that would make Apple's Fall new phone the 7th generation, technically, due to this mid-term upgrade. However, with the iPhone 4, we can see the naming cycle:

iPhone (June 2007 & February 2008)
iPhone 3G (June 2008 -- named for 3G service)
iPhone 3GS (June 2009 -- named for 3G service + SPEED)
iPhone 4 (June 2010 -- the 4th Generation iPhone)
iPhone 4S (October 2011 -- 4th Gen + SPEED/some say SIRI)
iPhone 6 (Fall 2012 -- the 6th Generation iPhone)
iPhone 6S ...
iPhone 8 ...
iPhone 8S ...
iPhone X (!)
etc.

When it came out the iPhone blew me away. It had what seemed like an enormous, beautiful screen, it was touch, it had both wifi and cell service, kept all my music, etc. They cost a ton, but I could see why. Nobody was doing anything like them.

Then came Android and those phones may have had similar sized screens, but they were ugly, the software was laggy--Apple was still far and away putting out the superior product.

The first time I noticed someone may have had something on Apple was the EVO. It was an obviously more useful screen, and offered higher speed data. But, Apple's iOS was still light years ahead and I was sure they'd have a bigger screen soon...that didn't happen (although they did add the nice retina screen).

Now we have a situation were the displays on the Android phones are much better/far larger, their graphics are all GPU accelerated so no more lag, and the Android OS has matured to where (at least on the flagship phones) it rivals the stability of iOS....heck, they even let me replace my battery if I choose.

This is where we find ourselves. We'll wait months and, if the leaks are true, we'll have a weird long phone that's A)still too small B) narrow, so the diagonal size improvement isn't even what it looks like on paper.

What used to be a compelling product is looking more and more like RIM Blackberry all over. A great smartphone maker failing to adapt.

Great post. I agree with everything except the blackberry comment. Apple is FAR from that. But the rest of your comments are spot on. Hence why if Apple dissapoints us with "the new iPhone" I will be getting one of the new nexus devices that come out.

they will call it the new iPhone ;) which is already confusing enough on the new iPad

when i went to the store to pick up my iPad and asked if they have "the new iPad" he was like "what new ipad, they havent released a new one" and i was like "oh i mean the iPad 3" hes like "ah ok"

by the way: this board is not optimized for the iPad AT ALL. i cant edit! its just asking me if i want to copy the whole comment box. annoying

The name is not confused. The reason it is right now is because Apple is in the middle of a naming scheme change prolly. Think about it, what do you say when you go in to buy MacBook Pro or something? "hey I'm interested in the new MacBook Pro." you don't say "I'm looking for the MacBook Pro 13 or anything like that.

Never seen a group of people get bent out of shape about a name of a product. It's pretty funny how personal people take this name thing.

Um, the 4 came out after the 3GS, and the 4 wasn't called the 5, so I'm pretty sure that if following their current pattern, the next iPhone will be called the 5.
Nope.

iPhone... whatever!

I don't care what they call it.

Looking at the HR photos from 9to5 Mac, I think the aluminum on the back is just a sticker put there on the prototypes to throw people off, a bit like what car makers do to their new models while they are in testing.

I think that the back will be full glass again but this time they seem to have recessed it in the case instead of having it raised like on the 4 & 4S so it shouldn't be as vulnerable to breaking [perhaps].

I really can't see why they would go with a panel in the middle and then have glass at either end - that's just dumb and it looks pretty crappy in the photos we've see so far.

In the end its all just Meh... I'm going to get one whatever it looks like and whatever they call it.

Good night.
