In all honesty, it should be called the iPhone 6. But the mass idiot consumer base would get all confused if they did. It only worked the first time around because "3G" was a technology that happened to have a number in the name. What they'll probably do is dumb it down and just call it "iPhone," like they did with the iPad. Lowest common denominator for this group.

----------

I really can't see why they would go with a panel in the middle and then have glass at either end - that's just dumb and it looks pretty crappy in the photos we've see so far.
That's completely subjective, of course, and I for one don't happen to agree. :)

I am relaxed, just an outspoken guy that is frustrated with Apple. It's not that big of a deal, yet I know that they monitor this forum, so might as well make it clear how I feel about the current trend.

My iPhone 4S is excellent and will more than last me until the following year.
[...]

Glad to hear it. And I'm just slightly jealous that you have the 4S with Siri and the A5X.
Still have my trusty old '4'. 99.5% perfect condition. Got it on 6/23/2010.

Oh my God you are retarded, people that are this stupid make me want to punch myself in the face, IT WAS CALLED "4" BECAUSE IT WAS THE FOURTH IPHONE *******, the 4S was the fifth, so the next iPhone will be the sixth iPhone, so NO, IT WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT BE CALLED THE 5!!!

Who are you calling retarded? the the general public will really get going from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 6... sounds legit
lmao.gif

I would have said iPhone (autumn 2012)
If it is going full metal back a wonder if they'll go move colours.
Maybe autumn release black only and drop it worldwide on the same day. Then iPhone (spring 2013) add white and another couple of colours.

I'm slightly worried about the (rumored) dark colored metal. Would love it on the black 2012 iPhone,
but a plain old anodized coating does eventually wear through to the bare metal.
Especially on the edges an corners. I'm sure Apple has developed something like the ultra-hard coating
on the current stainless steel "band" to minimize or eliminate wear.

Kind of like the concept (again rumored) of charcoal / black two-tone. It would add subtle
visual interest without being distracting in any way. Especially if the metal has a slightly
brushed texture to contrast with the smooth glass.

This is for all the stupid idiots that don’t know how the real world works.

2007 iphone named: iphone (because it’s a cool name)

2008 iphone named: iphone 3G (because of the 3G speed)

2009 iphone named: iphone 3Gs (because of the extra speed for the 3G)

2010 iphone named: iphone 4 (because it would be dumb to call it iphone 5,6,7,8 or anything else.)

2011 iphone named: iphone 4s (because every two years they like to add a “s” for speed and calling it 5 would be retarded when it looks the same. It also allows them to sell a crap load of new phones with very little changed.)

2012 iphone named: iphone 5 (because that is the name. If you ignore the dam “generation” and how many phones there were. And if you look at the world outside your nerd house; you will notice that EVERYONE else in the REAL world is waiting for the iphone 5. It will just confuse to many people and make even less sence to call it anything else. READ EXAMPLES)

The generation argument is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard.

Generation Example:
2012: iphone 6
2013: iphone 6s
2014: iphone 8
2015: iphone 8s
2016: iphone 10
2017: iphone 10s

Makes sense Example:
2012: iphone 5
2013: iphone 5s
2014: iphone 6
2015: iphone 6s
2016: iphone 7
2017: iphone 7s

Nerd speak “well you can’t call the 2016 iphone 7 because it’s the 10th phone”

DUMBASSES!!

I also think they will / should keep the numbers so they can keep adding the “S”. If they drop the number every other year the phone would be called “the new iphone s”?

Praise jesus! Someone here has a brain!

iPhone 4t

Sorry guys, but I have the inside scoop it will be called the iPhone 4T (the t is for tall).

Makes about as much sense as the 3Gs (the s is for speed) and the 4S (the S is for Siri).

Who cares what it will be called? Look at that photo in the OP's post. UGLY! That is NOT an Apple product in the slightest. Looks like something made from assorted parts - not the last of which is an enameled metal at the top and a YELLOW flash?? And, how about that Apple logo? Very suspicious and, if accurate, I will be very disappointed.

Rising Tide....for all iPhone users

The iPhone models are cumulatively crushing all competition.

Why splinter the sledgehammer with numbers?

Apple appears to be focusing on the iOS as the defining element from its competitors... so why limit that differentiation to one model? Apple appears to be upgrading all (almost) models via the OS so previous users don't feel left out.

I say the next release is "The iPhone Whatever".... with "all" iPhones upgrading to iOS6.

A new iOS "....raises all boats."

If Apple sticks with the 4's antenna design, the steel band is the antenna. So having an all aluminum back wouldn't affect signal strength.

The band is only part of the antennas. The other parts are still inside, whether made up of the circuit boards themselves or particular pieces.

At the least, the transmission seems to be centered inside the band. For example, Apple's FCC submission for the iPhone 4 included this labeled photo (purple circles added by me):

iphone_antenna_locations.jpg

The SAR plot also indicated cell transmission centered inside the lower middle:

sar_vz4.png

The iPhone 4S added a second cell transmission antenna at the top.

Most experts I've read seem to think that the glass back was necessary for dielectic loading of a type of slot antenna made up of interior pieces and the outside trim. However, perhaps Apple has a new variation in mind that will allow them to use a metallic back as part of the antenna... or they're just going to now transmit from top and bottom alone.

After reading 10+ pages of replies, thankfully, I now know the next iPhone may or may not be called the iPhone 5.

In all honesty, it should be called the iPhone 6. But the mass idiot consumer base would get all confused if they did.

Lets be honest, if consumers's weren't a bunch of idiots, Apple and Microsoft wouldn't have customers, and we'd all be on Linux Distros ;)

All said, I'm waiting for a new phone because of the Windows 8 and iPhone 5, its down to those two for me right now.

They both will probably come out around the same time, we'll have to see who can do better.

Probably mass confusion. Especially since AT&T got Apple to change the symbol of when the phone is on HSPA+ to 4G on the 4S.

I'm more joking than anything else, but I will point out that Apple has never seemed thrilled about doing that.

Well... the Original iPhone came in 4GB and 8GB models. That was what was released in June 2007. In February of 2008, Apple introduced a new model that was 16GB. It was the same phone but with more memory, but it was touted as a new iPhone, even by Apple (see link and their own headline) so technically, it was the 2nd Generation iPhone.

Apple Adds New iPhone & iPod touch Models

They didn't say it was a new iPhone, just a new model that has double the memory. The closest thing they said is "the new 16GB iPhone," which means nothing in terms of being a new generation. A memory bump alone doesn't make anything a new generation.

So, that would make Apple's Fall new phone the 7th generation, technically, due to this mid-term upgrade. However, with the iPhone 4, we can see the naming cycle:

iPhone (June 2007 & February 2008)
iPhone 3G (June 2008 -- named for 3G service)
iPhone 3GS (June 2009 -- named for 3G service + SPEED)
iPhone 4 (June 2010 -- the 4th Generation iPhone)
iPhone 4S (October 2011 -- 4th Gen + SPEED/some say SIRI)
iPhone 6 (Fall 2012 -- the 6th Generation iPhone)
iPhone 6S ...
iPhone 8 ...
iPhone 8S ...
iPhone X (!)
etc.

Again, the average customer doesn't know jack squat on a flying rock what generation it is so stop being anal about it.

Jeez, so much stupidity from the geeky types here, it WILL be called either iPhone 5 or more likely now just "The New iPhone".

That design will NOT be the new phone. Too many flaws with form and function, it's a Far-Eastern mock-up as it has the usual lack of regard for symmetry and placement of parts that is common in Chinese based design. Apple haven't complained about it despite "doubling down" on security so they could even have let it out as misdirection. If it does come out just being longer like that then we'll all know Steve Jobs had more influence than we thought with design.

Expect a slightly wider and about 1cm taller phone with 4.3" display that fits nearer the edges than currently (this would work). The back will probably be more like the iPad with taper and glass Apple logo.

I do know why... it's cheaper to make this very minor change, which in turn cranks up their profit per phone, which is what it's all about for Apple.

Money, money, money, money.

I do admire their ability to foist off something like this on the buyers, only to have people gushing and drooling all over themselves about this "Wonderful New Model".

At this point it doesn't take much to thrill Apple's followers.

yup this sis exactly the way steve did not what the company run. and now that he is gone its all about money.. they will milk this thing dry and fail to innovate and then will start the consumer boredom and decline..

----------

i was really hopin for an all new design and look.. the iphone4/4s look is now dated. but i will get the 5 once it is fully jailbrokenn

Can we please stop calling it iPhone 5? It's the least sensible name possible for the 6th generation iPhone.

The New iPhone, iPhone 4G, and iPhone 6 all make more sense.

I could see them calling it the 4G assuming it uses 4G but how that plays out in other countries which might not have or support Apples 4G is anyones guess, re-current iPad with 4G which has gotten Apple in to legal trouble here in Australia and the UK.

I don't care what it's called. However what I really really hope for is that if they are going to enlarge the screen don't just make it bigger length ways, they have to increase the width too. Just a longer phone would be ugly. The reason I want a larger screen is to see more of the page in landscape mode.

The device is very good and also very beautiful looking. Its one of the best product to come from Apple's treasure.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I have a friend that just purchased a Droid SII and she was told that AT&T had received a memo stating that they would not get the new iphone this year and that it would ONLY be debuting this year on T-Mobile.....and on the other carriers next year.....any truth to this or speculation?

This is hilarious! Id love to see what this board would make of the order Nikon name their cameras...

I know, right? Not only that, but how aggressive people can get about something Apple can decide all on their own. If they decide numbers are stupid, they go with the "new" or start letters. Maybe they call it the 2012, that would ber fun! I got an even better idea: iPhone One.

There is one thing for sure: People will buy it and if it isn't too bad, I will be one of them. If people ask me what it is, I will say: "It's an iPhone." Nobody cares what iteration it actually is and what it is called in detail.

T-Mobile Germany that is? They were the primary carrier in Germany back then. Doubt that T-Mobile gets anything exclusive here in the U.S., Apple's primary market. They are too small and that would hurt sales numbers for Apple. Not that I would wish to go back to T-Mobile (cutting my bill in half) but I highly doubt it. I think she told you this because she wanted you to buy the Android device. Most stores are franchises and they know that the chances that you will buy from them in 3 months from now are rather slim. Especially the iPhone, you might order directly from Apple. They wouldn't get commision on that then and they will tell you that they talked to your dead grandma who told them you should buy it just to close that sale.
Edit: Besides: How does a sale representative get that information. Even most Apple employees probably don't know. We read it often enough that they only get blocked for leave or extra shifts assigned and the rumors then fill it in with upcoming suspects.
