Everyone's black iPhone is going to look like ass in the matter of weeks. This pretty much confirms it. Especially that test with the ring.

Its just a phone, who cares if it has a bunch of scratches and scrapes, if its a big deal in your life, you have worse problems.

No one has pointed out the Multi-Tool

Umm, they might as well have used a hammer here. The kid is banging on the iPhone with a heavy, sharp, stainless steel multi-tool. These things weigh a ton and have sharp edges. There's nothing that would stand up to this kind of abuse. This is not just banging on the iPhone with keys.

I didn't realize it was news to everyone that if you throw and bang keys up a device it gets scratched up. I guess my car has 'scuff gate' too. Lol people these days..

Who cares about a little weight. The glass is better. Its more stylish, plus that extra weight makes it feel more substantial.

Except that the 4 and 4s already DOES stand up to this abuse. They even demonstrated it.

For the most part I agree. But as easily this scratches, this is going to look terrible a few weeks/months down the road sans case. I wouldn't drive a banged up Ferrari around. I wouldn't wear stained and ripped clothes. Likewise I don't want a phone that looks trashed up either.

People are pretty used to the 4 and 4s. He'll, even the 3G/s doesn't look this bad this quickly/easily.

You people are never satisfied! Damn. They got rid of the glass and gave you a metal back. **** already it's what everybody wanted

I'm going to guess the white aluminum is just as susceptible, but does it show as easily as the black?

It is, simply as its the same material. However due to the color contrast, the scuffs on the white iphone will be a lot less visible than black.

Anyone with a brain can understand that taking a steel nail to aluminum will scratch it. Next they'll say the iPhone doesn't hold up in hot tubs!

God this is such nonsense. It ought to be able to go in your pockets and not scuff/scratch up. That's not too much to ask.

I'll give Apple credit for making the phone sturdier this time around, but this is FAR too prone to scratches. Sturdiness is more important, but I don't understand how they let this get released. Guaranteed negative publicity explosion in about a week.

The white iPhone 5 actually held up way better againt scratches and scuffs than the black one. But, I'm not worried because I intend on getting the white one anyway :p

I don't know why everybody is so surprised by this. Obviously, glass is harder than aluminum. But it does break more easily, too... There's just no material that resists everything.

Stainless steel is a good compromise. It holds up well to scratches, and gives enough to not shatter like glass. That's why knives and other cutlery are usually made out of it.

However, it's much more difficult to machine than aluminum, and Apple probably couldn't hit their weight target (though they wouldn't have missed it by much). The real problem is the anodization. It's only a few microns thick (assuming hard anodizing) and doesn't generate a hard surface. So, yes, any contact with other metals will expose the underlying aluminum.

They should have left it natural.

Apple can't win. They use a hard material like glass, people slam them on the ground and cry about the glass breaking. They use a softer material like anodized aluminum, and people key the thing and cry about little scratches.

I prefer the glass, but oh well, nobody understands how good glass is until they see the alternative. This is like people complaining about the paint job on their Bentley after they drove it through a barrier into a ditch.

I just bought one and I think I'll have to get a bumper for it, even though I didn't want to. But to answer to your comment, Nokia managed pretty well with this, so it's not impossible.

So glad I did not pre-order. Knew about this 3 days ago so I went with the white model. And I did not even have to wait long. Showed up 5 minutes before Verizon opened.
