Quite the opposite, just lazily wiling away a few minutes with a cup if tea before trekking up Snowdon today. Usually I wouldn't bother, but the sheer level of mass hysteria relating to an inanimate hunk of glass/metal that many people have even yet to receive struck me as an amusing indictment of the state of mentality in popular technology culture today.
People frozen in fear of the devices that are created to liberate our day to day?
Its weird.
I just wanted to flag up that particular theme on this 'internet message board' and much like you, i "just had to point that out". On an internet message board. Are you getting this?
Thanks for your (presumably unintentional) ironic contribution. Could I ask that you also police this post for me?
Thanks.

and the S3 is relevant to this thread because?

or are you just butthurt because apple is smoking the s3 sales.

Just took an Android phone for comparison to show the typical iFanboy mentality. You and many others just worship Apple and feel whatever they do is right, who's being the troll here?

Apple mentality:
Lets make the phone super thin, like the thinnest ever. Yay!! We can market that, everyone wants thin, thin is in. (Except when it comes to the American people LOL)
It's too thin to be durable under everyday use, we'll need to make it tougher. Which makes it slightly thicker. No!! we at apple can not be apart of something so crazy as durability, how will we sell apple care and bumpers.

It's brilliant and you freakin morons buy into it.
-700$ phone
-100$ apple care
-30$ PLASTIC case (generous here)
-15$ screen protector
-700$ 1 yr later for a slightly updated, slightly faster, slightly lighter, slightly thinner new revolutionary iPhone 5S. - the "s" stands for SLIGHTLY or STUPID you figure it out.

Keep in mind ppl slept outside the store for 4 days. Don't ppl have lives? They still have stock. And in those 4 days I made enough to buy 3 of these by not succumbing to idiosyncrasies. I digress, since you guys buy the products that keep me profitable. I won't say who I am, but you otter figure it out :)

You sound like a child and you're going on a rant because mommy won't buy you the iPhone 5. If you can't even properly spell "people", I refuse to take you seriously.

...and drop tests

...and performance tests

....and the GS3 screen is still utterly horrendous

Most fandroids will say this when someone tells them that the s3 screen sucks:

"I DONT CARE! I THINK IT LOOK VELLY GUUD!"

I worship apple? now look who's making bold assumptions. Am I a fanboy or are you just a hater? stop acting like apple chopped off your d*** or something.

you make it sound like Fandroid sheep don't exist.

Everyone's black iPhone is going to look like ass in the matter of weeks. This pretty much confirms it. Especially that test with the ring.

That could be good or bad depending on who's a** we're talking about...either way better look like it than smell like a** - maybe iFixit should do a crack test next

That's it, white iphone 5 for me, if any. Now if only they made the 32GB the base model.. , such ridiculous ram pricing going on only at Apple...

the back of my 32GB 3GS looks better than the iPhone 5 in the video, after more than 2 years of use.. , and I keep it in my pocket without case.

Apple didn't 'f'up' anything.

People here (Australia) are spending up to $1000 outright on the phone. I've read on forums that people can scratch off the coating with their FINGERNAIL.

I've also read posts that Apple are aware of the issue and also furious at Foxconn, whether that is actually the case remains to be seen and we will find out in due course once Apple releases a statement, or holds yet another keynote on why their device is having problems.

I absolutely cannot believe that people are accepting this and think its a non-issue. Aluminum that has been anodized PROPERLY does not scratch off with a FINGERNAIL.

So much for "premium", then again, nothing made in China is ever premium IMO. It's simply not good enough and people who think it is need to get their heads checked.

Some people are so brainwashed it ain't funny.

I'll also add that I lined up all night for the damn phone as I thought Apple would get this right since it's their 6th time making an iPhone. I haven't opened it, but I'll be returning it (was going to swap for a white) and I'll buy it in 2-3 months once the issues get sorted out. It always seems as though you are taking a risk when you buy an iPhone right on release, I.e. yellow screens, death grip, and now scuffgate.

The best solution!

MY son uses 2" clear packing tape on the screen of his Android phone so it won't get scratched. Works great.

For my iPhone (only a 3GS), I use an Otterbox rubber case. Seems to prevent any damage to the rear and, if the numbnuts trying to damage their iPhones might give it a rest and think about how to prevent damage to their iPhone instead of causing it, a similar solution is available.

As an alternative:

Apple

A)releases plastic phone = it looks cheap
B)releases glass phone = glass smashes
C)releases metal phone = oh it scratches

Stop complaining bitches its the best looking phone out there!

What size? Hell, I'll buy it off you...

You are very astute. Hopefully MJ will perform said crack test.

The video confirms, drop the phone in your pocket or purse and it will look like crap in short order. Not what I would expect from a iPhone.

On the lighter side, MJ is one of the hottest geeks on the internet

Who cares about a little weight. The glass is better. Its more stylish, plus that extra weight makes it feel more substantial.

Apple does because they had to differentiate between the iPhone 4S and 5 some how. That and they made it taller. :D

I do have both car keys and a 2 year old in my house so I did find this video to be an excellent warning. Although my black iP5 went right into the slim case so I haven't actually touched it yet, I'll let the poor sucker I sell it to next year worry about that one.

UPDATE: I have allowed my fingernail to make contact with aluminum and, very interestingly, nothing has happened. I'll continue to update hourly.

And yes, I agree about the MJ comments, except for the guy who said "Milf", have some respect.

UPDATE: I retract my criticism regarding the Milf comment, I now believe it may be accurate.

I'm getting the black one and taking a Brillo pad to it as soon as I get home... Taking a video of it, and then drop the link in here... I'm gonna make mine cool with an aged and worn look...

copper back plate would be great too

Local metal suppliers have a black oxide kit you could use to patch

Some people would only be happy if the phone was made out of plastic...

----------

one of those clear plastic skin things should work well to counter this.
That is, unless something gets between the skin and the phone, which could cause just as much damage.

I am considering getting the iPhone 5, but I need to get more consumer feedback about the scratching issue before I take the plunge.

Boy, now that I've escaped the Apple cult, the 'apologists' thing is pretty glaring.

Some of the responses defending or dismissing the problem are seriously borderline creepy.

"Things scratch. Get over it..." "So just don't scratch it then..." "People will always find something to complain about..." "These tests are not real world use..."

The fact is that a product of this advertised quality (and high price point) should not have a flaw as simple as paint that scratches, and Apple knows that. They know that most people carry a phone in their pocket or bag, and most likely with a number of other things, including keys. They obviously know it, because they tout how strong and scratch-resistant the glass in their phones is. Therefore, to design and release something that can be scratched everywhere else is negligence.

Does it make good sense to use a case and protector? Yes.

Should it be required? Absolutely not.

Apple has stated before that they make their products to be seen and not hidden in cases.

No matter how deep in the cult you are, it is simply unacceptable that a product of this price and reputed quality be susceptible to something so small, yet so damaging. If you can't see that, then you need to pull your head out of your ***.

I'm now thankful for the horrible experience I had with Apple the other week. Otherwise, I would have bought this phone that scratches just taking it out of a box.

Even worse, I would probably have been on here defending or dismissing the problem.

Went to the local Apple store. Handled the new iPhone 5 in black, light, slightly taller. Wouldn't tell from a distance.

However, my thumb ring insta-scratched the corner on the black paint, didnt even try. Comes right off, what a failure, will look like **** in a week. This phone needs to be perma condomed.

The iphone5 is a significant step back from the 4 in regards to the durability and quality of materials. I would suggest the white to save yourself some pain.

RIP Steve, he's rolling in his grave.

The number of people on MR who knew Steve Jobs, both alive and dead, is amazing.

Canon had black flash shoe on the original 5D, it quickly scratched as well.
All versions since have plain metal.
