Zealous iFixit

IFixit relished making this video...
They probably see it as paybacks for preventing hem from selling spare parts on other Apple stuff and leaching off the Apple ecosystem.

IFixit will gain no credit for destroying a product for the sake of a few clicks from their beloved followers...And they're the only ones who clik through them ;)

Should offer a NAKED aluminum case!

Scratched? Polish it off!

Worked for the USAAF in WW2! ;)

Anyone with a brain can understand that taking a steel nail to aluminum will scratch it. Next they'll say the iPhone doesn't hold up in hot tubs!
I for one would definitely like to see that test video. Good thing most hot tubs have an age minimum of 17 and over.

I haven't heard anything about "scuffgate", what I am concerned about regarding this video is CHILD LABOR! Is this child part of a union? I don't think she is of legal age for manual labor laws. Finally I learned something in this video, I should remove my letterman and all other tools from my pocket so not to scratch my phone when I get it and storing my iPhone in a tool box is probably not a good idea. Thank god for this video.

I've never used a case with my iPhone 4S, I keep it back and face down on tables, it occasionally gets put in a pocket with coins (though quickly realised and removed). I've dropped it a couple of times.

No damage at all. I hope they revert back to the glass back design for the next iPhone for the reasons presented in this vid and that it grips really well.

I'm going naked with mine (whenever it gets shipped:rolleyes:)

I think after a few months of wear, it's going to look kind of cool with the bare metal starting to show.

An iPhone 5 with three scratches may look awful, but --best case-- an iPhone 5 with 5,000 scratches will look like the Millenium Falcon

I'm OK with that.

My opinion is that Apple saw way too many shattered screens & backplates on the 4/4S. With the change in manufacturing, it's easy to replace a shattered screen on iPhone 5. More people are probably willing to live with a couple of scratches than they are a shattered backplate, especially when a case can prevent the former better than the latter.

People who used cases on previous phones will likely continue to use them, and people who didn't, won't. Life goes on. Not everything has to be a something-gate.

So what about the white iPhone 5? I know it has a silver back, so does it scratch easily too?

I'm curious about that myself. I took a look at the iPhone 5 yesterday at a Apple store in New Jersey and played around with a couple of black display units for over a half hour. One was fine and the other had a small scratch on the back. I was so taken by the black ones that I forgot to look at a white one.

By the way, my feelings for the iPhone 5 are mixed. On one hand, the display looked great, no blotches/flashes that some new owners are reporting (with YouTube videos included). I got used to the slightly larger size right away. It looks right. You definitely notice the reduced weight which in one way is appreciated, but for some reason my 4S feels better in my hand. The 5 feels "cheaper". It doesn't look cheap, but at least to me, feels cheap.

I'll definitely upgrade next year to an iPhone, but I have this feeling that from this point on there will be more mainstream scrutiny on the software as the hardware this time is making a smaller impact visually than two years ago. I noticed something interesting when I was at the Apple store. Three people wondered the same thing when they spoke, looking at a new iPhone 5. They said to their companions, what's the difference? Someone replied, it's a little bigger. Someone else replied, it has 4G. A woman, maybe in her 40s, holding the display model said, what's that?

Really. And how else would I state an opinion?
Um, you state it as an opinion?

Here, let me give you an example:

"Frankly, the real problem is that in my opinion the black sides of the phone are ugly. Really, *** ugly."

See how it's different from what you wrote? Second grade education comes in really handy sometimes.

God, you must be a blast to hang out with, huh? It's an Internet message board for crissakes.

Great.

Now that kid will rub keys on iphones whenever you put them in her hands.

Kids do what you teach them.

See, EVERYthing written here is an opinion. Not sure that's in a particular class or grade, you have to figure that out yourself in life. Also, any comment anywhere about something subjective like the look of a phone is obviously an opinion.

So, I ask again: Did my comment sway you in some small way so you considered it an actual fact? That's ludicrous. I take no blame.

I might add that you claiming you know how I think (and complaining about this mythical thought) is far more egregious than me being determined that a particular phone is ugly and stating so vehemently.

are you kidding me?

I wonder what would happen if you did the same test to your manicure? Or your elbow? Would it be DEE SSTROYYED also? What a waste of bandwidth.

Surely not. When people come here for information and are told things like "the new screen is 4" in size, diagonally," that's what is known as a fact.

You asked how to state something as an opinion and I fulfilled your request. It's not my fault if you don't like the answer. :)

Seriously

Is this seriously what we are resorting to now for news clicks? If you gouge a 2 year old a set of keys and have her bang the crap out of an iPhone, it scratches. SCUFFGATE.

I'm seriously worried for humanity.

Me too. If this is what people truly worry about today, the world has a right to call us spoiled, fat, and lazy.

Would she repeat this test on her new Beamer?

It doesn't take a genius to know that aluminium is softer than glass and that glass is more brittle.

Is your phone for display or for use?

My old 3GS nearly falls apart and I have a dented MBP. But they both still work!
