Why are you guys so harsh on the OP?

Honestly maybe Apple should make they're products a little bit better and issues like this wouldn't arise. The Black iphone 5 is basically one of the worst built phones on earth when it comes to wear and tear build quality. It's probably the easist phone to date to scratch. And god only knows how many people experienced scratches out of the box.

Sorry guys...phones shouldn't scratch that easy from a case being on the phone. The OP gets a case to protect the phone and instead the phone gets scratched from the case. Someone please explain the logic here?

I have my launch black iPhone 5 and it hasn't got one scratch and I never use a case.

It's obvious what happened. Grit got in between the case and the phone and acted like sand paper.

Don't enter the iPhone 5 roulette, trust me, you'll find that all of them have defects out of the box. If the only defect is a scratch live with it or exchange by another brand.
This iPhone has very low quality standards compared to previous ones. I started the iPhone 5 roulette and after 5 attempts I gave up

Pretty much the dark side of the truth right here!

Once you roll that dice, it's pretty much game on. And IMO, it's like a 1 out of 20 chance that you'll end up with a perfect device not having one if not all of the issues below...

Tiny chips on back plate
Scratches or chips on chamfered edges
Yellow tinted screen
Hair line scratches on screen
Very low earpiece
Blown speaker
Faulty power button
Faulty non clicking home button
Faulty wifi antenna
Faulty signal antenna

That's basically a real deal laundry list of things that Apple should be ashamed of itself for having present on a flagship Apple product that's basically into its 6th generation.

all you have to do is sneeze into iphone 5 and the paint will go flying off. Cheap materials and construction. And people still have the balls to say that the iphone 5 has the best build quality among all other phones lol

Typical fanboi responses. I had my phone 5 for less than a month and the paint had already started to wear off the edges and I really look after my phone. Would you be happy if the paint wore off your BMW door handle in a month just through use? No. Do you think Apple intended the paint to wear off so easily? No. It's a flaw and should be seen as such which is disappointing given how much Apple invest in the asthetics of their products.

So if you buy a car, and then catch it on the gate on the way out - it's the car manufacturer's fault for not making the car tougher?

No. The op damaged his phone. It's well known that if you're not careful with cases they cause damage - since they collect dust/debris which can scratch.

Seriously - can I have some of what you've been smoking?

There were some issues with black paint which (I think) were blown out of proportion. The other issues are all one-offs. Stop spreading FUD.

Don't buy any portable device ( product at all ) if you can't handle a scratch which doesn't affect the functionality, for real.
I kept my iPhone "pristine" for a year in cases, screen protectors and such and after I got a new one I realised it was all not needed because I don't sell phones. So I got a perfectly fine iPhone 3gs which I and no one will ever use.
It's just a .. phone

i dont care about dents and cracked screen on my phone since i aint gonna sell it after i buy a new one, but i would be pisses if i paid 700+€ and the paint just fell off for no good reason after one week. That kind of stuff is expected from lower-end devices, not higher-end like apple.

I played the iPhone 5 roulette and this post pretty much nails it. Tiny chips on back plate, scratches or chips on chamfered edges and hair line scratches on the screen are very common. Apple should be ashamed for putting out a subpar product

True Story! Just for the record:

1st iPhone - Major scratches on the sides, exchanged
2nd iPhone - Bent out of the box
3rd iPhone - Sleep button flushed inside after 2 weeks
4th iPhone - Major dent on the sides
5th iPhone - some scratches on the inside bevel

Ended up with my 5th because I just couldn't be bothered. Quality wise this is the worst product I had from Apple

Sanded Raw Aluminum iPhone 5

iphone 5 aluminum.jpg
i know theres a whole bunch of threads on this and i apologize but i just wanna get your guys take on this i just got a brand new iphone 5 last week and loving it i honestly love it naked but decided to add a case on it but didn't like it i had the belkin grip candy sheer, and just noticed a scratch on the back side of the bezel now i know most of u said it's gonna scratch without a case but in this one the case done it since it wasn't there at all, so my question to u guys is should i try and give it back and get a replacement? or just keep it but so far the screen is perfect and there is no yellow tint or anything and i'm affraid of getting that if i get a replacement.

I sanded mine down to the raw aluminum. Love it now. No more dings, scratches on the finish. It also removed the dents and small dings.

Next time buy a slightly used phone, even a refurb one, that way you get a good deal and NO PRESSURE to keep it pristine. Seriously.

I just got a new car EVER and I hate it, trying to wipe off any droppings as soon as they occur, park a block away from others so they don't dink me, admonishing my kids not to slam the door so hard. ARRRHHH what has become of me, am becoming now a geezer old fuss daddy! I want my old used, devil may care, hit-me-I-need-the-insurance car back!

My experience as well. I've seen countless iPhone 5's and every single one has had an issue (some major, some not so much), but the scratches and chips new out of box are pretty significant for a new $650 phone.

Image is too small.

I dropped my iPhone and chipped the corner glass a small bit and chewed the aluminum down by the headphone jack. I'm going to (eventually, probably) send it back to apple and pay my $50 deductible for accidental damage that I get to do because I bought a $99 warranty... Sure I'm out $50 (was gonna buy extended warranty anyway) but at least I'm honest and did it the right way. If you want to carry your phone naked, you pay a bit more or take the risk.
