I used my black iPhone naked since September 21 (DAY1 of launch).

All was perfect until yesterday.

No drops. No knocks. I keep the phone in my pocket with no keys and coins(those are in another pocket). The phone was the only object in my pocket (as always).

And then I saw the scratch today. I have no idea why.... It is with normal use. And my phone became scratched? A phone is suppose to at least withstand normal usage right? :( I'm an apple fan.... But this upsets me a lot.

Sure, anodizing is susceptible to scuffs. Aluminium is malleable. But that doesn't give apple the excuse to dish out such a phone with weak durability right? Those answers are scientific reasons, but not business reasons. :(

I really think that most of the people that is responding to the third answer is more like this scenario than to have their phones perfect. The only un-scratchable material is the diamond.

I'm truly curious. Do most people really expect their phones to remain scratch/ding free from daily use? Attempting to prevent the said is one thing. However, worrying and analyzing the said is completely another thing. It must be very difficult for some people to enjoy their phones.

You can use any material object that is not consumable and maintain it in excellent condition. Personal electronics when properly handled and maintained can remain defect free. I tend to be aware of my surroundings and activities I partake. Thus, its not difficult to avoid drops, scratches, etc. Simple behavior like phone in one pocket alone, or think before placing on a rough surface are not inconvenient and do not lessen my experience.

My 4S remained scratch and ding free after 1 year. I expect the same out of the 5. That is of course I can find a 5 that isn't scratched/dinged new in the box. No such luck yet.

I do have to say I started using a napkin to place my iPhone 5 on when ever out of my pocket or hand. Still showing wear on the edges. My guess is by Oct 21st it will be obvious enough to get another iPhone 5.

These polls are getting old so to throw off the poll I just picked an answer that didn't reflect the condition of my iPhone 5. :p

Aside from the scuffs in a few places along the chamfered edging that were there out of the box, I've had no new scratches or scuffs or dings at all. I didn't even put a case on it until today, and I've had it 21 days. (was waiting for a case I really liked and just found one) but I would have no problem continuing to use it confidently without a case based on the experience so far. I'm pretty sure my damage happened in the factory.

I dropped my TI-84 a few days ago. It wouldn't turn on after that. Thank goodness it was just the batteries that just happened to swell up and stop working. It still works :)

I also dropped my iPhone 4, but with a bumper case and a screen protector, it was fine.

So bad products are related to Watergate? That's not really relevent. Watergate was a scandal, not a large accidental mistake made on a product. Now I'm all for getting rid of the "-gate" suffix.

Steve Jobs is who named the reception problem of the iPhone 4 antenna-gate after consumer reports recommended not getting it. So be upset with him lol.

Scratchgate?

This is just getting sad now.

Unfortunately, it's a real problem for many people. Perhaps, not all the finishes are equal. I don't know. Mine is holding up just fine. However, after all of the accounts, there has to be something to this.

Blemishes out of the box is a different issue.

On my way to Arizona this weekend, I accidentally ran my sports car off the road in the middle of nowhere- stupidly was distracted for a moment, caught a soft shoulder, over-corrected and went off the opposite side backwards and spun off into the desert. A large amount of sand came through my sunroof as I came to a violent stop. Phone flipped out of the Japanese made thin snap-on polycarbonate shell case I use, which was clamped to the dash mount, and ended up bouncing off the console onto the floor. The dirt covered the phone (and everything else).

After checking the car I grabbed the (white) iPhone 5 to see if I could get a signal, as my front wheels were buried in the loose desert dirt (red sand). I wiped the red dirt on the phone off against my shirt. No damage. No signal, either.

With help from a passing trucker and a motorist I got the car out of the sand and back on the road. Car didn't have a scratch either, though both tires on the passenger side were deflating slowly from pebbles trapped between the mag wheel and tire bead.

Stupidly (again) I left the phone spending 50 miles sitting in red fine desert sand on my leather passenger seat under my jacket. I was a little distracted trying to reach a gas station to re-air the tires and didn't think about it. Had a pair of Oakley glasses sitting next to it, the silver finish on the frames was rubbed through to the plastic underneath in a couple spots.

Made it 20 miles to a gas station, found both tires down to 10 psi, re-aired them after digging a few more of the pebbles out of the rim. Made it the rest of the 30 miles to civilization, got the tires remounted, vaccumed out the car and finished my trip.

Still not a mark on the phone but the screen protector (which I had bought in Japan the previous week) had a few hazy spots.

I then spent the next day at a training center in the desert in Arizona running six tactical pistol scenarios and four side matches. Rolling on the ground, running, was covered in dust and sand. Phone was in my trouser pocket the whole time- I (yes, stupidly again, I know) dropped several 1911 magazines into the same pocket doing tactical reloads under time pressure. Moved the phone to another pocket after that. Found a couple caliche pebbles in there when I was done for the day.

Phone still didn't have a mark on it, though the screen protector was trashed.

Cleaned the phone, installed a new screen protector and now the phone looks exactly as it did out of the box.

Yeah, I would say it's tough enough. Reasonably stupid resistant, anyway. But I'm sure black would have been another story.

Mine had several small chips along the edge when I first go it. Apple, to its credit, offered to replace my phone overnight. The service was great, and the new phone is holding up well. I need to get a good case for it, though.

Semi Case 2.
Has been perfectly so far.

Was holding the phone in my hand today while sleeping in the car. I got a text and was startled, and basically threw my phone against the side of the door.

Only a small pin spot on the bottom left corner, but I don't mind showing the wear&tear. Pleasing aluminum patina.

This is taking 1st world problems to the extreme. Anyone that hears the word "aluminum" should know its going to scratch. Why its such a big deal that the backside of a phone gets scratched is beyond me.

Society has devolved into nothing but vanity apparently.
