I don't know if Apple would do it; but I;d like them to.
No Apple had to give Verizon customers the same iPhone 4, but the antenna was tweaked for the CDMA. Apple can't just give Verizon users iPhone 4.2 (working antenna).
I think a better antenna will be at the top of Apple's list for the iPhone 5. Also, i completely agree with you, the 3GS > iPhone 5 > iPhone 7 sequence is the best, and i've stuck on with my iPhone 3G so i could upgrade to the iPhone 5 and get into it.
Here's hoping for a bigger screen, 3.7"?
If they make the screen edge to edge it will become 4 inches without any changes to the physical phone dimension.
I'll bang this gong again. Now someone reliable is showing a similar form factor, this is not the iPhone 5, this is iPhone 4G.

People underestimate how big of a change the 3GS was on the hardware side. It was based on a whole different architecture (ARM Cortex A8 CPU + PowerVR SGX535 GPU, same as the later A4-based devices but at a lower clock speed).
Of course, the iPhone4 was the biggest refresh to the iPhone ever since the original was introduced, but I would call the 3GS number 2 on that list.
The iPhone 3G on the other hand was so close to the original iPhone in terms of hardware, that it didn't even get it's own internal revision number.
Don't know about the screen, though. I'd really like to see them getting rid of the black borders left and right, but I don't think they'll be able to fit a 4" screen without making the device physically larger. Also they couldn't just change the resolution because that would break all apps. I'd say either the device gets slightly smaller or no change at all. There's a slim chance of a just slightly bigger screen (3.7" or something like that) at the same resolution but I somehow don't think Apple would do such a thing.

IMHO the reason why the 3GS was named like that was to bring the iPhone names in line with the respective hardware generation. In other words: New iPhones will most likely just be called iPhone 5/6/7...
I guess the CPU/GPU will be the same as on the iPad 2, probably with slightly lower Clock speeds, just as they did with the iPhone4 and the iPad.

Probably going to wait for the iPhone 6; first time without getting the newest and the latest/best iPhone...oh well
Anyone think they won't call it the iPhone 5? I suspect, if they only update the speed, they'll call it the iPhone 4S and save the '5' for a mores substantial refresh.

I think Apple needs to concentrate more on improving iOS rather than adding a faster processor. Tbh I'm pretty fed up of my iPhone 4 as the is just looks boringly simple. Not everybody wants the same old os on every device. I think it's the omnia 7 next for me so I can have a change.

What real difference would a larger screen make, it's half an inch at best, barely any difference.
I really can't see what could be gained from doing this, other than being in line with the competitions screen sizes. It would have an impact on the resolution and thus affect all apps.
Would increasing the screen size really enhance the product if it compromised the ecosystem upon which it is so tightly engrained in?

from 3gs - iphone 4 it's been only offering a 16-32gig model. I won't upgrade until there's a 64 gig version so i can cary all my music for bluetooth audio in my car and I have no intention of relying on a cloud operation where I could loose signal. Besides between my new maxed out 11" air and iphone4 i'm set for a while
24" imac 2.8ghz 1 Terabyte, 11" maxed out air, apple tv 160 gig, iP4, airplay 3 rooms

No, they aren't. Don't post complete garbage. They have no need to release an iPad again this year. How many times have you ever see Apple do a product refresh in the same year? Every single major Apple product runs on a yearly refresh, with a couple of months either side to handle any possible delays.

I agree. iOS is #1 reason why I haven't bought iPad yet - Android 3.0 looks so good on tablets that I haven't decided yet wheter to buy iPad or Android tablet. I'm not that interested in new iPhone models either, because iOS has basically looked the same since the first iPhone, and it's beginning to look very old and dated. I know it's simple to use, and for many people that's the biggest reason to choose iOS, but personally I like to try new things.
Agreed. I moved from my good ol' 3Gs to a ZTE-Blade a few months ago and have to say that despite the general black/grey colors that android apps seem to be forced to use with the UI, the 'desktop' of the phone is much more elegant and usable than the iPhone's. I'd really like to see Apple open up the API's a little more and maybe even allow us to completely swap out their homescreen for custom app based ones. It works well on the droids.

I find it hard to believe that the next iphone won't turn up until September if Apple is only shoehorning in a current production processor and maybe a spec upgrade on the camera. So it is obviously about LTE.

Same, and I'm saying that as a 3GS user. I'm not feeling the slowness here, and the only thing I miss from the iPhone 4 is the better camera. I've seen the Retina display but while it's a nice resolution bump, it still didn't make my display feel horrible. I'm not annoyed by a particularly low or below average resolution.
I'm hoping the iPhone 5 has something more to it than this. I don't even know how it would make use of an even faster CPU than that in the iPhone 4. Are we annoyed by things going slow?
If they were going to call it the 4G, they'd have to include LTE capabilities, and all rumours so far suggest they won't.

. Don't see why people want more control over pointless things and want more complexity/layers. That's why iOS currently works efficiently as it is. It'll likely won't ever happen because it's the Apple way.I'm sure we'll see iOS5 push things way beyond customisable homescreens. Better notification, fresh UI and some new touch-based features will keep the iPhone ahead of the rest IMO.
Make the glass less brittle! And please continue giving us pleasant surprises in terms of features.
