Isn't this true? I thought that a thinner phone would leave a poorer quality camera (not video camera). The iPod Touch seems too thin to be honest, I'd be afraid of ever dropping it. I rather have an amazing camera and a thicker phone, the picture quality of my iPod's camera can't be compared to the i4's.

A larger sensor produces better quality images (other factors notwithstanding).
To get light to refract onto that larger sensor you need a certain amount of focal length. It's the reason that a DSLR and its lenses are so large.
An iPhone can't house a huge sensor. Or, more specifically, a lens to cover that sensor with an image. And if you try to cram too many pixels onto that sensor you run into other issues related to pixel density.
A bigger MP number is not necessarily better "just because".
