I have yet to hold my phone in any way that drops calls. it drops calls less than any other phone I've had.

I am unable to hold my iPhone in any position similar to this without losing all signal or 3G, this used to be my natural holding position.

But being such a fantastic phone overall, the con of having to hold it differently is out weighed by the Pro's.

Still in my mind, as someone who works with, and understands how antennas work, having the antenna in direct contact with human skin is sheer idiocy.

4G-iPhone-mockup-Designed-by-Item-back.jpg

I loved this mock-up when I saw it.

While I love my iPhone 4, my iPhone 3gs felt better in my hands. I always felt the designs of the iPad (1) and iPhone 4 should have been reversed.

YES! First I love the design. Second, I feel many times that Apple's products can be reversed too. The especially the iPad 1 and 2. It's like Apple decides what is new and everyone follows the trend :D

Even if it doesn't drop a call and you are in a strong signal area, if you cover the problem strip, there is no transmission and the other person can't hear what you are saying even though you can hear them. I just realized this recently (or I'm finally out of denial) and I'm beginning to feel like I got screwed.

Impossible design

This is a pretty disgusting design, I am sure Steve Jobs has much better taste.

Sorry chap, I didn't expressly mean to deride the iPhone 1, Just I was always much fonder of the G1 iPod touch's matte aluminium bezel than the chrome one on the iPhone (despite its little wifi notch, I still feel it’s the best designed iOS device). Ive seen countless chrome bezels around nokia phones and the like, so it just felt a little cheap to me. but yes, the fillet edges of the iPhone 1 are a far more ergonomically pleasing shape to the hand, and the aluminium shell has a much nicer materiality (and robustness) to it.

Fair enough, mate.

I always knew Apple regarded the original iPhone as THE design. I absolutely agree and still am a proud owner of one. A come back to the robustness and classyness of the original iPhone will be appreciated.

I am positive that whatever apple has designed or in the process of, will be truely a work of art. Anything Apple, Bring it!!

And yet so few truly experience any problem with it.

By the way, I know an ogre who can squeeze his ipad 3G tightly and get the same result. Like the iphone he has to really try hard to make it happen.

They are acquiesced the market share to android so I don't see them pushing the envelope too much and focusimg on their established space to generate new sales via refreshed hardware ie buying it for the new form factor and slightly updated os

The only thing that iPhone 5 needs for me to finally sign my life over to it is WiMax and a 4.3" retina display.

Sorry, but the size of those 4" + screens has spoiled me. Anything less is just torture.

yes sirrrrrrr, i agreeeeee....those 4.3" screens are incredible and nice to use.

Liquid Metal and Quantum Dot Displays

I wonder when we will see Apple's first product using Liquid Metal structurally?

I'm also curious as to whether Apple is exploring Quantum Dot display technology (it's probably still a few years a way for TVs, but it could come sooner for small displays).

too many things missing:

Where are the black spots for WiFi and 3G/4G/LTE antennae? even the iPod touch has to have a spot on it for the antenna(e). This is just an iPad image, and a poor mockup of what iPhone 5 might look like. If anything I think the CDMA iphone 4 is going to support my theory of keeping a very similar design and just upgrading the internals - think 3G to 3GS. no reason to redesign every year (antenna issues can easily be addressed). With any luck we will not have iPhone 5, but rather iPhone 4G. If you've watched Apple over the years, they are not too anxious to move too quickly forward. The 3GS helped keep the iPhone 3G owners on board for an extra year with out them thinking they were missing out on much - could be similar with this year's phone.

Well, now I'm rambling.

A modern version of the original edge iPhone would be fantastic and welcomed : )

Lame.

That mockup is highly lame. Why would Apple redesign the iPhone 5 to look just like the iPhone 3G? They staff some of the world's best industrial designers for a reason and it's not to recycle their old ideas. Pretty much the only thing missing from this picture is an elevator.

Full circle

You know your design is great when after several iterations you must return to it.
  1. Aluminum flat back: Great. Now try something different.
  2. Cheap curved back: Not stable enough and, well, cheap feeling.
  3. Less curved back: Ergonomic but getting tired of this shape.
  4. Glass back: Sleek. It's the new "black" but fragile.
  5. Aluminum flat back: You can type on it without rocking. How novel! Let's offer it in white too. It even matches the iPad 2. Brilliant!

It should be an interesting upgrade for iPhone 2G users.

No, the iPhone was not classy. The design looks shoddy and outdated. The iPhone 4 is classy. How does aluminum look classy? I have yet to figure that out.

Glass back: fragile.

Um. No.

One thing I like about the current iPhone is the easy way to customize changing the back glass and replacing the battery. I have the typical Philip screws.

Going back to aluminum backing will make it harder to replace a battery or changing the look of the phone. It is like the first gen iPhone all over again where it can be a pain in the ass replacing the battery. Go on YouTube to know what I mean and compare it to the 4.
